This was so much fun seeing someone else’s coop. I really wish there was scratch and sniff video. The coop had no smell at all. There were so many great things I wanted to point out for key points to consider when building your own coop. It takes something special to be able to build something that is functional and beautiful from repurposing materials.

We just finished a repurposed coop. Such a challenge! Nothing is square so things need reshaping and you have to spend time deciding the best use of the lengths you’re working with. A bit like laying a pattern onto cloth. But it is so satisfying to look at the final result and know you just made a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

Love how passionate you all come across. I used to have chickens when I lived in France. One in particular would tap on the kitchen doors in the morning to be let in, and whilst we sat eating breakfast she would head to empty log basket and nestle down to lay her egg. She then went around the kitchen table for pecking at all the crumbs etc that breakfast with my family would have made. She never pooped inside, she was part of the family. The other chickens never got that attached to our home, they all when and did their thing in the chicken house. Great memories 👍

In the deep north (WI) I build my litter in layers all summer long. Then, into the winter its a deep litter method that helps to keep them warm all winter long. Spring time is definitely the time for a deep clean and then time to start all over.

I love how you have plastic Adirondack chairs in the run (easy to hose down). I just started 3rd shift and so I have to build some kind of run because my 7 gals won't be able to free range on the days I work - I'd never convince them to go back in the coop before I have to leave for work. But I knew I would miss sitting out with them - I wanted to make the run a space they and I could both enjoy and seeing how your family did it is awesome!

Hi Jaque! Your chickens are super cute. I bet the eggs are great. What are you doing with your winter garden in this heat wave? I know you said an umbrella, and that worked great. And Kevin showed srinkling the broccoli in the heat of the day, which works great too, but is it time to chuck it? and start on tomatoes and basil? It's going to be 90 today! W T Heck. I don't want to say goodbye to my little gems. I'll put some in the shade in containers to see how it goes. Have a nice day!

Its tricky as coastal San Diego doesn't hit true summer until July basically, so we have like a 50 50 chance of it being a warm spring or a cool spring. I will likely do a combination of summer and spring plants now and then as I get into April I will do the full summer sowing.
