I got one of these for my grainfather last year, love it. I think the biggest perk is the ease of cleaning, obviously besides also being so fast. I let it sit on top of the false bottom, feels extra secure.

I've been using mine for about 3 years now (and got rid of the grainfather cfc). This is an amazing tool. I brew a lot of IPAs with big whirlpools. I started to NOT put my chiller on the false bottom (too many hops push through) and use my paddle slid between the hot and cold tubes to suspend it in the wort. This, in effect, keeps it about 2" off of the false bottom. I also modified the pump tubing to allow me to run it during the whirlpool with the outlet submerged under the surface of the wort. I've had amazing results. The only challenge I have with cleaning the scylla is when I use John Haas ingonito and flex in the boil/whirlpool. It takes a bit more with pure grain alcohol to clean it off - but overall I suggest it to everyone.

Great video. Tip: I’ll stay counterflow for now. If you submerge a second submerge chiller in ice water best to add salt to it. It further cools it down.
@DavidHeathHomebrew3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes the salt trick works but best to use a pump rather than another immersion chiller.

I know this is an older video, but how does this chiller hold up with the use of a whirlpool arm? It seems that having such a tight space between the coils would hinder the formation of a trub cone.

No problem. I have only used it with brewing systems with a false bottom where this is not a concern. So it is hard to advise on this, sorry.

I was a little confused on you water pressure on the counter flow chiller. I upped my water pressure on my Exchillerator and it cooled 10 gallons to pitching temp in 9 minutes with 60 degree ground water. The lower water pressure hurt the performance of my counter flow chiller. I would love to know why more pressure can damage a counter flow chiller.
@DavidHeathHomebrew3 жыл бұрын
When I say damage, I literally mean it can burst. Some countries have high water pressure, some do not. Here in Norway we certainly have it. If you go full blast you will destroy it.

Do you think this would be a viable solution for a typically larger batch size using the Brewtools B150 Pro?
@DavidHeathHomebrew3 жыл бұрын
I have to be honest and say I am not sure. I believe that something larger from Jaded would be better though speed wise. They have a big selection.
@eliten0Ob3 жыл бұрын
No. The downsides to immersion chillers is going to magnify by a lot when dealing with larger batch sizes. As your wort cools down, your temperature differential is getting smaller, and the efficiency of cooling drops. You consume a TON of water cooling your wort down this way. In addition, the size of the cooler also need to increase to increate the rate of removal, which in turn makes the unit that much heavier. I honestly strongly advice using immersion chillers for anything above 50L.
@DavidHeathHomebrew3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you will want one suited to the volume, otherwise it's a bad idea

I use the NorCal Brewing whirlpool paddle with my Hydra. It's small enough to fit in the middle. I put it into the boil same time as the immersion chiller for easy sanitizing. My wort drops fast and hard, I get the absolute clearest wort possible. I'll have to post a pic to the Facebook page sometime.

emersion chiller will always be in my future list. im currently doing BIAB in my kitchen which i also used to cook and my pot size planned is getting bigger and bigger. i will no longer be able to carry the pot and it into a sink or a bucket like what im doing now with a 14L pot. im currently using too much water in brewing, washing, sanitising, chilling. it is a waste. need to be sustainable. what i have in mind is to retrofit a close loop system from a water dispenser or a 2000btu air conditioner. retain the compressor, cap tube, condensing coil, then replace the evaporator with a coil similar to this kind of chiller. the coil is to use internal finned tubes to increase efficiency and reduce coil length. i reckon that the water dispenser's system will over work if i cool down 30-40L from boiling temp, but the AC system might be too heavy for me to carry around and store. concept is still concept, need to find something in between. how much water is used to cool down a 19L batch and what is your inlet water temp david? my water is about 25-28 degC irregardless of morning or night

Im using a whirlpool paddle with a screwdriver in center of a standard stainless steel cooler. My cooling times are stupid fast, I would not be surpised if its similar as this cooler. Im gonna measure it and report. Thing is, if the temperature of water exiting the cooler is similar to the wort temperature, maximum cooling is achieved for that waterflow rate. More coils will not help then, only increase waterflow will improvere the cooling. I highly recommend testing this, you get some wort aereation and sedimentation as a bonus.

@@DavidHeathHomebrew I tested it today brewing your Irish Red Ale. I had 30 liter of wort, and my tap water is 11 deg C. I run the paddle at a speed which gives a strong vortex, but not too fast since it will foam alot. I started at 100 deg C, after 3.5 min = 40 C, 5 min = 30 C, 7 min = 20 C.
