When I was a young kid there was a guy up the street named Dave who had a huge drum kit and He was a jazzy styled drummer who could Rock Out. He played all this Carl Palmer stuff and Mitch Mitchell and It Always sounded So Great. I wanted to be a Drummer. He showed Me things and I remembered it for later. Everytime I heard Him I would go up to His Garage. he reminded Me a lot of Carl.

Saw ELP on their WORKS Tour without the orchestra,and when Carl got on the kettle drums was amazing with all kinds of primitive rhythms incorporated into a wonderful Solo!!Complete with glowing Dragon on his Gong and me on LSD,,,

Absolutely Awesome! Is it just me or did I hear bits and pieces of ELP's "Tank" thrown in there?!?

Yes you did. It’s basically the same drum solo he did with ELP including taking off his shirt and drum kit revolving.

I have that t shirt that carl is wearing in this vid .. I saw him at a drum clinic and he was wearing it and he gave it to me after the event when I met him.. he confirmed it was the same one … and he autographed it for me … It's a little grubby now but I just can't wash it as his autograph will disappear!

What's with the weird electronic toms there? Sounds like he did use a Simmons brain. Did he actually built those custom drums?
@hubbsllc2 жыл бұрын
Simmons commissioned some sculptor to design a series of head-shaped pads of which the company made a limited number.

Although my all-time favourite drummer has always been Cozy Powell, here's Carl Palmer at his best days behind the kid. I am a massive fan of his through 1970-77 as well as his work in early Asia. He really was sublime, both in the studio and live, an innovator of percussion, who was already a genius in his early 20s, in a time filled with great drummers and great bands. But IMHO, since halfway the 90s onwards, his playing declined, doing the same thing over and over again, very repetitive. Today, at 74, he still plays almost the same and tries to show he can play as fast as when he was much younger. Sorry, folks, I am not dismissing him nor being disrespctful - in fact, it's fair to recognise his huge contribution as a percussionist. But from halfway the 90s onwards, he changed a lot, relishing more on his solos. Today, when I see his current playing with his band, I definetly don't like him; he is a very talented guy, but to me, IMO, has never developed into creative player; he seems to be stuck in the same thing for years. Very predictable. To me, I prefer this Palmer, the powerful force behind ELP and early Asia. Cozy will always be my favourite, as he has been for the last 40 years, long before I ran into ELP; I should add Neil Peart, another spectacular drummer; Roger Taylor (Queen), Ian Paice, Bill Bruford, John Bonham, Phil Collins, Scott Travis (Judas Priest), among others. But with regards to Carl Palmer, give me the Palmer of ELP and early Asia. Not the current Palmer. Just my thoughts.

@hubbsllc2 жыл бұрын
Hard disagree. In this solo Carl is playing in a Rich-like style to a degree that few rock drummers ever could, but Buddy was more agile and creative than even this - which is no dig against Carl. Yet Buddy wouldn't have been able to do what all Carl did in ELP and Asia.
