There's a lesson in every track. Trusting a tracking dog is a big one that comes with time for a tracking team. In past videos we've seen how prey drive matters, how the nose knows more than we do, and you've seen trust. What you'll see in this video is how even when doubt and lack of trust creeps into my mind, my tracking partner Jaeger will always find a way to prove me wrong and restore it. Watch and learn. Good boy Jaeger. #teckel #trackingdog #deertracking #trust

Excellent documentation of a gut shot track. So often no visible sign for a very LONG way. Reading/trusting the dog becomes everything, and that is not easy if the deer has been bumped and you're not seeing sign for a 1/4 mile or more! And at night perhaps especially so. Loved seeing Jaeger beginning to air scent. With my BMH that usually means the deer is dead very close. And the sudden change in the line also usually means the deer may be close; last attempt by the deer to hide. (not always). Several times when I was ready to quit as I began doubting my dog, the hunter would encourage me to go a little further and we would make a recovery. Anyway, just great to see your dog work and the reality of tracking play out.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video, and we appreciate your comment. We try our best to show the reality of tracking, good and bad, from start to finish, to help both trackers and hunters know what to expect.

That’s a great track for both Jaeger and you. I have a miniature wire hair that has similar traits as Jaeger when she is tracking. It is very hard to go against my instincts or what I think I know about where the deer goes. “Clyde” my little dog has taught me to be patient and to really watch her body language. It amazes me how these dogs use more than just sent on the on the ground. They think and make decisions to try and future it out. Great video man !!

Thats a great dog! With no blood he's trailing off the interdigital gland in the foot of a wounded deer.
@DamonBungard
@DamonBungard 8 ай бұрын
Yes he is, thanks. They are tracking off more scents than we'll ever understand. I know a lot of people put a lot of emphasis on the interdigital gland, but I personally do not. Jaeger has tracked plenty of game like wild boar, elk or bear that lack the gland entirely and he acts no different. He's a dog with a very talented nose, and prey drive, and know how to use them.

A great video - so easy to lose faith in the dog when no sign is seen and then other tracks of live deer pop up. Tracking or hunting?? A lesson for all of us with young dogs.

my brother had a Lab that was the best tracking dog i ever saw, i named him Radar. when you turned him out, he would run in a big circle then just run Stright to the deer away from the trail, he would not bark, so we put a bell around his neck. he would wind the deer. one that was fatally hit, we never lost. Rader is dead now, i miss him,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Great video! I have no experience with tracking dogs but had retrievers for years. Once dropped a big ring neck pheasant and couldn’t find it. Dog kept going to a groundhog hole. I was getting frustrated with the dog thinking he was distracted by the damn groundhog. I couldn’t get him away from it. The I looked closer and saw a single feather in the hole! He kept digging at it and I could eventually reach in and pulled the bird out. Always trust the dog is right!

I just can't understand the willingness to let a shot fly without the confidence that it's a good clear shot and will put the deer down with the least amount of suffering! So is the meat still good or will it be wasted for the rack! Stiff as a board with a gut shot and probable contamination!!

Gotta love when the hunter gives you bad information regarding how far they tracked and ultimately pushed the deer. We all get excited when we hit a deer and start finding blood and it's our obligation to track and find that deer, but don't lie to the tracker when giving him the details.

Jaeger has good drive. After all I have seen he would become much better if you do some more systematic training. About the trust thing: You are right - let the dog track and just walk behind. To build this trust you can do training tracks. Or just try and error, but it will be harder for both of you.
@frechwieoskar8052
@frechwieoskar8052 Жыл бұрын
Prey drive - it comes through breeding. But you can emphasize it ultimately by giving early success. Let him do easy tracks first. Just go on, you are on a good way.
