legokidlogan Yes - last time a checked friction was actually a force - usually the equation is used for how much force it would require to stop an object - but I don’t see why you couldn’t calculate the force to get the object started. And therefore for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction (also known as drag or friction) which opposes the starting force. So basically your wrong

Matthew Batchelor Not quite. The formula Simon referenced, `F=ma` is not for friction. It is to calculate the amount of force gravity puts on you. The opposite force of that is not friction, but rather the normal force; that is the force the floor exerts onto you to keep you from sinking into it. To calculate friction is more complicated than to calculate gravitational force. For one there are many different types of friction, depending on if you are working with liquids or solids, if they are moving or not, etc. While Simon's conclusion that a higher gravitational force increases friction is correct, his reasoning behind it is completely wrong.

Jeroen Bollen But here in lies where you are wrong; it’s not just for the force of gravity - as I mentioned the a can be for deceleration and hence the stopping force needed - it can and probably is used for calculating force exerted on passengers in a stopping car. This equation is for a vacuum and hence an extension of this equation can be used to calculate friction

Yes Simon, the force of friction on the surface is reduced because the normal force is smaller since there’s less gravity, so it would role farther. Furthermore, the factor by which the friction is reduced is the same as the factor by which gravity is reduced on Mars. Good intuition Simon.

Simon the wheel would go further because the force of friction is proportional to mg, and if g is less, then friction will be less, so (assuming the wheels start at the same speed) if you set off a wheel on the ground in earth and one on the ground in mars, the wheel on mars would go further
