Srila Prabhupada wrote, “Next you ask if I am present in my picture and form? Yes. In form as well as in teachings.” And on Sept. 4, 1972, he wrote, “There is no difference between me and my picture”.

Hare Krishna. Yes. He is present in his books and Vani is more important than Vaphu. But śāstra nor Śrīla Prabhupāda said that Vani should be used as a substitute for Vaphu seva. One must approach a physically present guru. This was what Śrīla Prabhupāda had taught us for the past 10 years he was with us and everyone agreed with only until a few years after 1977 when His Devine Grace disappeared. Kṛṣṇa is the first spiritual master, and when we become more interested, then we have to go to a physical spiritual master. That is enjoined in the next verse. tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ (BG 4.34) Now, Kṛṣṇa advises that "If you want to know that transcendental science, then you just try to approach somebody." Praṇipātena. Praṇipātena, paripraśnena and sevayā. What is praṇipāta? Praṇipāta means surrender. Surrender. You must select a person where you can surrender yourself because nobody likes to surrender to anyone.
