The Jagdpanther - Hunting Panther was a heavy tank destroyer (Jagdpanzer) based on the Panzerkampfwagen V - Panther chassis, it was equipped with the long-barreled 88mm gun of the Königstiger, the L/71. In this video we look at and into the Jagdpanther of the German Panzermuseum Munster.

I TRULY like the fact that you call it what it is. A hunting panther, and NOT a tank as so many " so called " 20 something historians do. For some reason they just don't get the fact that if it DOESN'T have a turning turret it's not a tank. It's a tank destroyer.

I’ve been to the Bovington Tank Museum and there they had one aswell. Let me tell you, these things are so much bigger than you’d expect. Vehicles like the Jagdpanther, Jagdtiger or Pershing are such absolute units it will leave you speechless.

Jagdpanther is the exception .. look at the production numbers.. most other tank hunters are much smaller. Most produced is the StuG variant. Also a Panzer V at 2,99m is only 30 cm taller than a Panzer IV at 2,68m . A Sherman is 2,74m , a T34 is 2,60m. Now put that into relation how cramped the inside of a T34 and Sherman is and how roomy and ergonomic the inside of a Panzer IV and V is. For comparison a Leopard I is 2,62m in height and a Leopard II is 3,03m (top edge of periscope).

From asking Doyle, the final drive on Panther was never improved, only the ones which went on Jagdpanther. I'm unsure why, I can only assume capacity issues with the various factories. It is worth noting that though the improved final drive is referenced in Jentz/Doyle works on Jagdpanther, it is notably absent in works on Panther.

by the time the jagdpanther was developed, in 1944, it wasn't worth rehauling panther production to use the new final drive. after all the supply line was shortened and panthers died early enough that the final drive wasn't a big issue by this point

@ Tom: There are numerous accounts by Allied soldiers on the western front, who upon seeing a Jagdpanther for the first time, said it put "the fear of God" in them. Or words to that effect. I saw one in person, so to speak, at the Patton Armor Museum at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, and it is even more impressive close up. It's absolutely massive, and looks threatening even sitting still. An M4 Sherman weighed in at something like 33 tons, depending on variant, and that's no small amount of weight. Yet in comparison with a Jagdpanther (44.5 tons), it looks small and almost toy-like.

One note on the early smooth gun recess collar (Geschütznische) it wasn't really welded but rather affixed internally using tabs, the opening in which the collar sits is also used to remove the transmission so the collar had to remain removable, you can see this mounting on the IWM Befehlsjagdpanther which has been cut open. The collar on the Munster vehicle was introduced in late September/October 1944, there was another type quite similar but less chonky which was introduced in late August but which was found to be to weak. On production it should be noted that the second assembly, MNH, was initially only supposed to produce Jagdpanthers temporarily while MBA got tooled up to produce Jagdpanthers, however due to inexperience with producing armoured vehicles MBA never really got up to speed and MNH continued to produce Jagdpanthers (as well as Panthers) until the end of the war along with MIAG who were the sole Jagdpanther assembly plant until late October 1944. The effect of the delays from bombing raids and other disruptions become evident when looking at the amount of hulls produced compared to the amount of Jagdpanthers accepted. Whilst final assembly was done by three plants (MIAG, MNH and MBA) hulls (Wanne) were only produced by Brandeburger Eisenwerke, the highest known Wannenummer is 300795 which means that at least 795 hulls were produced before the end of the war whereas only approx half of these got assembled into finished Jagdpanthers (note that the hull number did not necessarily match the Fgstnr. of the finished vehicle)

Something I wanted to say, and what might be useful for a video about the Panther's final drive... The oft thrown about number of "150km" until breakage comes from the French Panther report, which is often used for all kinds of statistics. However, recently I've seen more and more people claim that the Panthers used for this test (3 in total, so you can already see that any average will be heavily impacted by one vehicle alone) were Panther A's which were found abandoned in and around the Normandy area. While I do not have a source to back this up, it is interesting to delve deeper in this argument to see if there's any truth in it.

If you look at actual combat reports you will find that the Panthers final drive issues are greatly exaggerated. The biggest problem with the panther, and all German equipment for that matter, was the desperate situation the Germans were in from 43 onwards which led to poor quality control during production, poor maintenance once in the field, and probably most important poorly trained drivers. You have to understand that many, if not most, Germans didn't know how to drive a car let alone a 45 ton tank with a 700 horsepower aircraft engine in it so training would take the two things the Germans were most short of, time and fuel

Those French Panthers were captured Normandy veterans - with all the wear and tear that could be expected under these circumstances. Those final drives were propably on their last legs and then driven by guys who were used to the ruggedness of the Sherman. So no wonder they gave in quickly. BTW the French ended up with a full battalion of Panthers (around 30) after the war, those 3 you mentioned might be those that were captured by FFI and used in direct combat. Those 3 may be even driven by people without any tank experience or veterans of the French Army in 1940.

The Stug was the most numerous tank the Germans had in the war. It also had the most kills. I recommend getting the book "Panzer Aces II" by Franz Kurowsiki. The first chapter is about Sepp Brandner. He fought in the whole war on the Eastern Front in Stugs.Reading that chapter will give you a good idea of how good Stugs were.

It's no wonder the Jagdpanther needed a strengthened drive. It must have had to work much harder than the drive in a turreted Panzer. And the driver too. He must have been a lot busier and had much more responsibility than a Panzer driver.

You mean turreted Panther and Panther Driver. Panther and Panzer are two different things and are not interchangeable. Panzer is short for Panzerkampwagen, which is the German word for tank. So, all Panthers were Panzers, but not all Panzers were Panthers.

Is that penetration through the mantle a fatal shot for the tank? I guess it could only of been an APDS from the 6 pounder at less than 500m to be able to go through. What is the history behind that shot? Did it knock the tank out?

He also got one in the engine room from the side, they dug the shell out of the engine when they restaurated the vehicle. The description plate in the museum says it. The hit on the collar was actually the fatal one, a clean penetration by an 17 punder (IIRC) APDS round.

@@jackd1582 Because it is an APDS round. It is not a full calibre round of 76mm but a slim penetrator of around 30mm. The hole is very small.

Heeeey, my favourite Jagdpanther! I recognize it by its "scars" (aka shell impact) even before staring the video as I have seen it at least six times in Munster. ^^ Edit: would have liked some words on battle experience with these vehicles.

@@cowgoesmoo3850 Mooooo! I can give you a short breakdown of what is said about them in the museum/what I concluded myself. Front plate, the two impacts that are visible in the middle above the plate joints: 75/76mm AP rounds (my conclusion from size), deflected. Two more dents that are not clearly identifiable. One more impact on the bow that was repaired with putty. Gun mantlet: one penetration by a 76mm (17pdr) APDS dart that finally took out the tank (this was said by the museum IIRC, although from the star-shaped carvings around it, it looks more like a hollow-charge impact). Not visible: side-shot into the engine compartment between the road wheels and the upper hull. Shell was found when the tank was restored, caliber was not given. Tough tank indeed. :)

this tank can go ledges and bounce shots. not sure why the frontal plate never bounces a shell from a smasher, tankenstein, but it can bounce a shell from borsig. great tank for gun assault. equip with 10.5 cm gun and it'll deal 300 damage which is recommended as a JPanther aficionado such as muah

The Kwk43/L71 was a monster. With a muzzle velocity of 1 Kilometre per second! I've heard an account from the Tank Musuem of it blowing the engine block of a T34 clean out the bank of the tank at 500 meters!

This is the Jagd Panther. The only Panther worth building (as a heavy medium the Panther's weak side armor was lethal to its crew vs the Tiger I that was worth building keeping its precious crews alive twice as often) while the Jagdpanthers had better armor; no turret ring, less weak spots and as it fought at longer range it could fight without exposing it's weaker side armor but was also the best tank destroyer of WW II due to its gun and speed. Indeed my WW II armored vehicule of choice and my favorite EVER.

I always figured one of the leading problems in final drive failures was the loss of resources relating to powerful metals to survive the powerful impacts of hill and terrain while torque was expressed on it heavily, especially for front heavy vehicles. Issues like tungsten missing, hence also an equal lack of APC rounds, now resorting to APHE.. Final drives breaking constantly because the tougher and more rugged pure metals they needed for them are all but evaporating for things like rounds or parts~~ it's not all that hard to tell really the designs are never really the physical problem as much as the resources needing consumed to produce them to their fullest potential seems to magically be missing for them to be mistaken as idiotic hiccups in designer history. It's actually fairly similar to the same arguments used to defend the T-34 as a good tank. If you make excuses saying "If this, now it isn't bad," then this same logic could be applied to here.

Where is that 'Used Jagdpanther Dealer' you refer to? I'd like to check out their inventory. This video is excellent. Please do a follow-up video on the damage to this vehicle. Did the hit on the mantlet-surround, actually penetrate? Any idea on what gun did that, and the other damage to the front of the vehicle? Thanks
