From a guy who goofed around on some private servers back in the day, I remember goofing around on a couple different private servers but me and my friends alway came back to the main game. The main motivation for me was playing with members stuff since I couldn't back then, as I was but a small human with no credit card. I think any private server that has any sort of longevity would have to be a very different way to play like prop hunt or maybe your bossing account you mentioned but even then those people aren't going to stop playing normal runescape.

I've recently started playing a private server that has been up for over 10 years and still has a loyal fan base and lots of money dropped in it by that fan base im talking about 20k+ a month every weekend the owner does livestreams and giveaways its actually pretty interesting.

@Nick-ij5nt11 күн бұрын
I could see a possible scenario where eventually the boosted xp servers overshadow the main game. The playerbase is only getting older, a few of my friends want to play OSRS but they have jobs and kids, so they don't really have time to invest 3k hours just to get to the good content.

To me the biggest advantage of the community servers is that they can be catered to specific types of players in ways Jagex can’t on the main game without making it less fun for other kinds of players. For example someone could make a skilling focused server with changes like removing standard resource drops from enemies, rebalancing skills like smithing so you could make level appropriate armor yourself, add higher level gear that could be crafted, etc. without upsetting players who would rather get higher level gear from boss drops in the main game.
@Equitine12 күн бұрын
Definitely has a bright future. Osrs private servers are a pretty big community. And being able to fine a server that fits what you wanna do alot easier without needing to create a new character just a seperate profile like leauges is now is a pretty win. There is also the aspect of community interaction with content creators being able to easier host tournaments limited series/modes or something like the guilanor games. And i dont think i have to stress this but the community will always beable to pump more content then the studio can which means content fiends will be satiated while waiting for releases. Main game will still have its place for sure but that "oah i dont need to create a different character can just hop in this world on a different profile to try/test some things" is a massive appeal and draw.

I think the main game will be fine thanks to the reasons Jagex has mentioned before like delaying updates for private servers, but also because I don't see people being as attached to their characters/progression on these private servers as they would be on the main game. Sure people will play on fun and novel community servers and even grind on them for a long time, but I am pretty sure that for most players there will be an understanding that "this will not be around forever" ofc the main OSRS game itself will not be around forever either, but hopefully the day when the game itself actually shuts down is many many years away. Though with these community servers unless they are ran by a well known and dedicated person who you can trust not to mess with things, there will always be a sense of "this is ran by some random who could shut it down at any point" whether that is because they lost interest, lack the time/resources to keep things running etc. So in short I think most people will of course have fun with community servers and try them out, but will see them as "temporary" or something they can't knowingly put down and be able to guaranteed come back to as the server might not exist anymore or be wholly different and revamped as nothing is stopping the server owner from turning it into something else. Another thing which will probably make players not as attached/invested in these community servers is that for the most part I would assume notable achievements and unlocks in these servers will not be as "coveted" or as "rewarding" since they are easier to get creating a lesser feeling of investment/attachment, for example killing Zuk and getting your Infernal Cape on the main game will probably make you care a lot more about your character, but having for example the inferno auto completed will make you care less about it and just take it for granted. Though as a counter point to this I know there will of course be some (rare) cases where a community made boss/quest/activity will be much more difficult than anything on the main game and as such you could argue someone gets more attached to that server/gamemode because of this, but I would also argue that even though this can of course happen it will occur on such a small scale that the "player loss" this would cause on the main game would be literally unnoticeable since the amount of HLC people who already do crazy challenges like low gear/stat infernos or whatever are such a small subsection that they do not reflect a large amount of the community, like we will not be losing thousands of players from the main game to the community server cause everyone is over there wanting to fight "Giga-Zuk" or whatever. Summarizing this bit I'd say that even if players are not worried about the server they are playing on changing or shutting down, they will still not be as attached as they are to the main game as the achievements on community servers will usually mean less than on the main game, though as I outlined there can be exceptions to this, but those are rare cases which should not affect the main game to any great extent. Thirdly I think that most, not all, but most players will relatively quickly (at least in OSRS terms) return to the main game after playing on a community since there is a good chance (not guaranteed at all and there will of course be exceptions to this) from my prior experience with community servers in other games that a good chunk of servers either shut down or become dead server where maybe at most 1 or 2 people play at time. Now for OSRS as a very "solo-able" game this is not as big of an issues as for other multiplayer games where other players are essential (think cs 1.6 server back in the day). So what I predict is that there will be a cycle where players will jump onto community servers for a bit and play while they last then return to the main game until eventually they get the itch again and find a community server to be on for a while, this can be thought of similarly how players, and as a more public example streamers, might play on their main/"main-iron" go do a GIM and then return to the main after a while. Though this is not universal and as I said I expect this out of most, not all players, there of course will be people who will find a gamemode or type of server that can only exist as a community server and only want to play that and will rarely if ever return to the main game, but this is once again a much rarer occurrence in my mind. An example of this from another game would be players in Counterstrike who only play the Surf gamemode and never/rarely touch the main competitive ladder, but as can be seen in that game as well these players are always a subsection of the player base. In short my opinion is that most players will dabble for a while in a community server (for week/months) and then return to the main game for longer periods until eventually jumping into a community server again once they get an "itch" for it, while the amount of players who will exclusively play community servers and not the main game is quite small as that would occur with gamemodes or gaming experiences which by necessity can only be found on these servers. Now this is where I must stress that all of the above has been exclusively about players who CURRENTLY PLAY OSRS and who might think about switching over to community servers whether temporarily or permanently. So far I have not be writing in regards to new players, but my thoughts on this can be expressed in a hopefully shorter fashion. Community servers will attract new players, this is a positive for the game. If a new player plays on a community server and becomes a fan of the game and jumps onto the main game and eventually plays like an established player then its all good and the community servers have done an outstanding job in terms of getting more players on board. If a new player plays on a community server and decides that specific server or others like it are the only thing they enjoy about the game and that the main game is not for them and they would not enjoy playing on the main game, then that is also still good for the game as whole, since we would never have "naturally" gained them as a player on the main game, but they are still paying for a membership and POSSIBLY engaging with social media such as reddit, twitter, discord etc making the game as a whole more popular, basically becoming "free marketing" the same way that players for games through word of mouth have always been "free marketing". If this happens often enough or on a large enough scale then we will just have a separate player base who only play community servers that have never touched the main game because they never wanted to and never would have, but similar to RS3 they are still keeping Jagex as a company profitable and helping to keep the main OSRS alive by paying into the system without ever touching the main OSRS game. The very last thing I want to note is that if somehow community servers, despite the argumentation presented above, are harmful and very detrimental to the success of the main game Jagex are not in any way obligated to keep them running (maybe at most keeping them running until current subscriptions have ran out while stopping new ones for legal reasons) and can shut them down either for a very long time until they figure out how to overhaul them (like partner slayer lol) or forever if there is indeed no way to fix them, no sane company would let an unproven side product kill their demonstrably profitable main product, of course exceptions to this can be found in different industries where companies pivoted hard and then failed, but with how vocal and active the player base or more cynically the "consumer base" of OSRS is this is infinitely less likely to happen to OSRS since the players have many times in the past driven Jagex away from "ruining the game" so to say. So overall I think we are not really going to "lose" that many current players to the community servers, the community servers will attract new players and quite a few of them will probably even make it onto the main game and those who don't are still a boon or a benefit for the main game by helping to keep Jagex profitable. Overall seems like a positive update to me that will not "kill the game" and I have not really even touched on all the positives from this update for content creation from very talented people like Settled, Soup, J1mmy etc etc.

the niche and success behind osrs is that it has long term goals and progress and not that you can do whatever and have nothing to do, nothing is handed to you immediately. the gamemode will not be a success for the osrs playerbase, except for the niche part of community that is either 1) content creator, or 2) experimenting for fun but going back to main game soon after. unless they are able to invite in a large chunk of new players, this content will be more or less dead after few weeks to months.

I think you are vastly underestimating the amount of the player base under ~1500 total level that only has a few hours to play a day / week. I could definitely see a server with boosted xp, and maybe quest skipping, to be a massive success with them. It would let so many people experience end game content with a fraction of the time investment, why would these kind of players want to go back?

To be honest, I'm almost certain Project Zanaris is Jagex's attempt at introducing more ways of mtx without adding it into the main game (OSRS). Not only would you need to rent the servers, but I expect it to be filled to the brim with mtx, paywalled content and probably other monthly costs just to run the servers as well. My point here is, the private servers WILL also have p2w mechanics or be filled with ads or something, I mean, I doubt anybody is going to be running these servers for free, especially if they have additional costs they have to pay to Jagex. This might draw in additional players and especially the ones that play private servers, but it's not going to kill OSRS. Most people will still prefer to play the main game, instead of a private, player run server that likely ALSO has costs to play.

I think the main thing that splitting of the player base regardless of how often they have them come back is the GE economy. The item flows will be impacted if some of the more "hardcore" grinders leave for these other modes, so prices will go up due to limiting of supply. Overall though, I don't think it's the end of the world if the player count on OSRS dips. I'm an RS3 main, and our regular player count hovers around 100k and we're doing just fine. The one downside of the lower player count is seeing less people throughout the world though. I personally treat Runescape as more of a singleplayer-ish MMO anyways so it doesn't impact me, but I could see people having issues with it.

I feel like the percentage of people who'd like to skip the early game and all the grinds that come with it are in the minority for sure. OSRS is insanely grindy and yet it's still super popular. That's because you feel like you've actually worked for and earned your achievements. Competing for hiscores for example is really rewarding because you know how much time and effort it takes to be competitive. Completing a collection log requires dedication. Just general stuff like that, it's all about the journey not just "I want to do end game bossing from day 1".

It'll definitely reduce the population, but if OSRS has ever had one draw over other games, it's been the pride for doing things the hard way...I think that people will heavily favor community servers, but there'll be a prestige that comes from being accomplished on the main servers that community servers won't have. If anything, I think the community servers are better for Jagex's lifespan - instead of worrying about collapsing financially between major content upgrades, they have the community servers as life support. I don't know if that balance would last forever...but I think it'll last them longer than only running OSRS would.

I think its hard to moderate when you can sell things outside of any jagex entities

Great video, thanks for creating a space for discussion. Personally, I have 0 interest in project zanaris. Ironman and leagues is plenty of content. It will be cool to use it to be able to test content I don’t want to sink resources into, but that’s about it for me.

I like this style of video. I think private servers could be cool but could also be a mess. Since you have to pay to host one as a creator, someone could just get tired of running a server and just let it go and then all of your progress is just lost overnight, same if they just wanted to kick someone for no reason since its their server they are paying to host. On the flip side they could be a blast as there are some super good creators out there on other games that could make a better server than jagex depending on how much they open it up on what they allow you to do.

I'm in favor of this project 100% however I also agree with you.. they need to be very strategic with how they release this it could go south fast!
@ohoto389612 күн бұрын
well done, you passed the clickbait test as well, raising some valid points. bonds are not going to go down any time soon, thats how I fund my membership from iron drops so we'll see I'm only interested in the main game, never play leagues/dmm and won't be playing this but now i have an idea of what to expect in how it might affect the main game. Frightening territory indeed. If this PZ sht will stop mtx from coming into osrs because of boosted profit, I am good with that.

Leagues is fun, but i think most of us want the progress that is permanent in the main game
@lbjake2112 күн бұрын
meh i dont think its that deep as long as they are getting sub money, there are tons of us who didnt bother with leagues and wont bother with zanaris
@Thelivecoach12 күн бұрын
Even Zanaris private servers will always miss a true sense and meaning of accomplishment. The reason League does better than private servers is because it has links to the main game still and is time-limited. I think it will be great for very specific community events or training content but people will always prefer the game version that “counts” over a personal version in the long term. Even if you pull casual mates to your own server, you’ll want to go raiding in the main game with them at one point. And if they delay new content to the original version + count online players over all servers, it won’t change to how active the game as a brand is, wherever the player base is playing from.

i feel like PZ will not be able to pull in a large part of the Private Server community, whether that be because they don't want to pay for memberships, or because of the fact Private Servers aren't beholden to jagex's rules (primarily around gambling). I think that there will be popular ones, and I'm very excited to see what the creative community can do when given some tools to truly develop quests, bosses, area expansions and the like. but i dont think any PZ server will be killing the main game. I also don't ever agree with the "nostalgia" point. I have no nostalgia for OSRS, I didnt grow up with RS2, never played RS3. I have poured around 1700 hours into my account this year, hit 1900 total, and I'm only now starting to work on longer grinds. OSRS has only grown since it's launch, and it's not because of nostalgia. Games don't grow new players with nostalgia, a new player has no nostalgia at all. I think PZ will be great for the creatives, and good as a resource for players to learn content to help them on the main game. I think it'll also be like Leagues. where a server pops up, draws in new players, and those that get hooked inevitably migrate back to the main game, because this is where all of us are, and where, ultimately, everything actually matters. Do a ToB in a private server? cool, now do it in the main game. Do an Inferno with infinite supplies? now do it in the main game. I think it can be good, but I have 0 doubt that PZ servers will ever pull more players than main game servers.

The game will be fine. Look at leagues. There's a reason thy put a limitation in time for it because they know nobody would keep playing it for a year or more. It'll have an impact short term but long-term I don't think it'll matter too much aside from being a practice tool or if a KZbinr launches a limited competition server or something. The only appeal to the game is the grind. It's just that a lot of people don't realise that. It's fun to be maxed for a while but it wears off so quickly. But it'll be nice to learn high-end PvM by making a league's type of game where you can apply buffs to yourself or nerfs to the boss or maybe disable/enable some of the boss's mechanics like the glacier boss on RS3 so you can learn bosses without being overloaded by mechanics immediatly. It would benefit the PvM & even the PvP scene immensely by providing them an accurate replica of the real game where they can practice without going broke.

Is project zanaris basically just permanent leagues?
@ThatOneNerdGaming11 күн бұрын
I've been playing both rs and MANY rsps for over 2 decades. Rsps get a bad reputation and I don't know how. The only negative thing I've had happen in an rsps was getting banned for agreeing that mobs should be placed in correct locations. Now I did stay away from those massively customized servers that had goku for bandos and spongebob for kril but that was just preferences. Did try a couple just couldn't get into them. But still no negative stuff happened like keylogged and what not. And with project zanris announcement rsps servers are already starting to drop and lose people. Some have shut down due to it and it won't be out for years most likely.

will there be people who only play the new private servers rather than the main game? yes obviously if leagues was available as a perm game mode, many people would never go bsck to the main game (unless they wanted to explore the other areas) Like you said, it would be a good way to get new players (and paying customers) in the door to try out Runescape for the first time, I could even see those new players also crossing over to RS3 wanted to know what that experience is also

If I wanted to play a private server. I’d play a private server. This won’t effect the main game
@morephenek12 күн бұрын
A server like leagues but without the area locks or the op relics would be great for those new players who want to try that content. You both would start off fresh and work together, like group iron but the grind is faster. Cut the 100 hour grind down to 10.

Tbh having a maxed account but with no loot or gear would be pretty good. Id give that a go. I miss playing really but dont wanna spend all my time grinding 1 level to get another level to unlock a quest to kill a boss.. and so on

I actively played rs from 2006-2012 when EOC arrived and that made me quit. I was an end game player with party hats and spirit shields etc. I came back to OSRS when it was released ~6 months later and played off and on but re-grinding the 6 years of progress I made as a kid in high school / college / now adulthood just isn’t interesting/feasible for me. I am competent (maybe rusty) in the core game mechanics and even game knowledge to some extent because I’ve followed series off and on but I’ve never done any of the modern age content. A simple server where I could jump back into the game mode would absolutely get me to play again - at least for some period of time. It’s not clear to me if I’d get the same level of enjoyment out of it, but it’s certainly entice me to try whereas now it’s basically a nonstarter. The challenge I foresee is I don’t know if/how the servers will stand up over some time. I would quickly quit if I didn’t have a set of high level peers to play with and because the game mode is effectively made up, I think high level players would understandably prefer playing that content on the main game (I would if I still had the account progress).

A server with leagues relics that resets with each season would do me just fine, i dont enjoy rs anymore but leagues is always a blast so having that to play would keep me paying sub fees... where as right now i only ever really play for 2 months of the year (leagues)

Unsure, just like private servers your progress will get wiped and its for nothing. The main game my accounts have been around for years. It's a gimmick and will attract new players, but overall I would invest my time in the base game.

Love the video. Didn’t know this was even coming to RuneScape. I played custom / fake servers as a kid and for me … it was one of the worst things I had ever been exposed to. The thrill of mining a handful of rocks and instantly going to 99 mining or killing a few goblins and being maxed combat. I was killing mobs that in the main game I had never thought I’d reach. It was so exciting… for an hour or so. Then of course… I ran out of stuff to do and … I didn’t want to go back to the grinding style of the main game. I stopped playing for 15 years after that until I discovered OSRS and have always been resistant to the idea of boosted xp servers ever since. Hopefully this is more of a fun way to practice boss mechanics or custom quests and not something that takes over as the new “main game”

Even deadman mode has boosted exp... and leagues, so there's already ways the game is "broken" but it doesn't kill the main game.

I love ya link. But after you said teenage NINJA mutant turtles I had the giggles an that was it for me. But aside from heavy giggling I think it's all fair points made. But honestly even if the main game suffers a player drop. Their will be so many fun servers to hop into, and some of them are going to be the best that everyone wants to be in an things will kind of settle down over time I think.
