VIC METRO has marched to a 33-point victory over Western Australia at Optus Stadium, securing a 2-0 record in the AFL Under 18 National Championships. The visitors dominated the latter stages of the game, booting seven of the last eight goals, including an impressive run of six consecutive goals across the third and fourth quarters, resulting in a final score of 15.16 (106) to 10.13 (73).
After a convincing 67-point win over South Australia last week, the Sandgropers started strong and led at the first two breaks. However, Vic Metro’s midfield prowess turned the tide, winning the clearance battle 31-17 overall and 17-6 at the center bounces, enabling them to overpower Western Australia in the second half.
Jagga Smith, in one of his standout performances, led all players with 34 disposals and five clearances. Levi Ashcroft contributed significantly with 27 disposals and seven inside 50s, while Josh Smillie stepped up in the second half with 22 disposals and nine clearances.
Vic Metro's key forward Thomas Sims showcased his skills with seven marks and three goals, while top 10 prospect Luke Trainor impressed with 26 disposals, six marks, and nine rebound 50s, effectively shutting down WA’s tall forwards.
For Western Australia, midfielder Luke Urquhart was a key player, amassing 27 disposals, five clearances, and seven inside 50s. Despite some inaccuracies in kicking, he demonstrated his rising potential. WA skipper Bo Allan worked hard to keep his team in the contest, posting 19 disposals and scoring two consecutive goals in the third term before Vic Metro’s game-winning run. Malakai Champion, a West Coast Next Generation Academy hopeful, also made his mark with three goals.
With a 1-2 record in the tournament, Western Australia will face Vic Country at Claremont Oval on Saturday, June 29. Meanwhile, the undefeated Vic Metro will head to South Australia to battle the Croweaters (1-2) at Alberton Oval the following day.
