As Wab Kinew joins the chorus of other premiers across the country asking the federal government to scrap the carbon tax, federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is reacting to that news in an one-on-one interview with CityNews.

Canada has some of the freshest air in the world! why are you taxing them for other countries that pollute?
@garyhaggquist7405 ай бұрын
Canada is the world's 10 largest overall CO2 emitter - 4th largest oil producer & exporter. Record wildfires in 2023 emitted 3X as much CO2 as the entire CDN economy - 232,000 Canadians in 12 of 13 provinces & territories forced to evacuate. Until we meet our climate targets we'll have zero moral authority to call on any other nation to meet theirs.

You are using the wrong metric to think about global warming. Air freshness is not what the carbon tax is targeting, at least not directly. Air freshness has to do with the particulate matter in the air; meanwhile, the carbon tax has to do with greenhouse gases emissions such as carbon dioxide. You basically confuse smog with gases. These are not the same thing, not the same problem; albeit, they have elements linked. Secondly, Canada lies about our environmental data. We are not even in the freshest air in the world.: We were the 19th in 2022 and that was a good year for us in the World Air Quality Ranking. However, given that this air quality is the wrong metric, we need to look at CO2 emission, and we got 15.22 tons of CO2 per person, putting us at number 12 as the most CO2 emission by capita with a bunch of oil-producing nations. We might be an energy producer, but we have more than oil to offer. What some on the right are doing is betting on old technology while the world is slowly moving away from old tech. That would be like betting on horse carriages in 1906. On top of giving a gift to some rich people...

The odd part is the carbon tax works. We got the data since it has been rolled out, it is in line with other nations using a carbon tax, and we got people complaining while not understanding the economic effects of global warming. There is some hypocrisy here coming from Singh. In the last two elections, just like the Liberals, Green Party and the Bloc, a carbon tax was part of the NDP platform on climate change. Secondly, provinces were already given the option to come up with their own solutions as long as they met the federal standard. It's not like they weren't.

Driest winter ever recorded in Alberta the media's darling "experts" told us, until it started to snow and snow and snow.
@garyhaggquist7405 ай бұрын
Doesn't change the fact that 51 Alberta river basins from Milk River to Hay River are reporting critical water shortages - groundwater levels reaching record lows. Univ of Alberta research shows that the Prairie provinces have become hotter & drier over the last 120 yrs - higher air temps in winter & spring, less snowfall - more disruptive weather.

@@garyhaggquist740 Are or were. Where do you think all the water goes when it melts?
@garyhaggquist7405 ай бұрын
@@rickvervoort9536 So, you deny the research from the Univ of Alberta showing that the prairie provinces have become hotter and drier over the last 120 yrs? Do you deny that farmers and the insurance industry have stated that climate change is affecting the agriculture sector in Canada? It's a fact that the dry parts of the world are becoming drier, partly through reduced rainfall; partly through declining river flow as mountain ice and snow retreats; and partly through rising temperatures causing increased evaporation and increased transpiration by plants. Many of the world’s major growing regions are now threatened by “flash droughts”, in which hot and dry weather sucks moisture from the soil at frightening speed. Some places, such as the southwest of the US, now in its 24th year of drought, may have switched permanently to a drier state.
@rickvervoort95365 ай бұрын
@@garyhaggquist740 Not sure if you are aware of this but where you are sitting was covered in ice 5 miles deep just a mere 30,000 years ago. I would summit that we are on the tail end of that melt which of course would appear to happen quicker with the relatively small amount of ice left (see glaciers).
@garyhaggquist7405 ай бұрын
@@rickvervoort9536 Perhaps you're not aware that ice core data, tree ring data, and the geologic record show that 2023 was the hottest year in the last 120,000 years and that human fossil fuel CO2 emissions are changing the climate 10-100X faster than the last 3 climate changes in earths past (which all caused mass extinctions). Perhaps you're also not aware that whistleblowing ExxonMobil scientists testified under oath in 2019 US Congressional hearings that the fossil fuel industry knew over 40 yrs ago that fossil fuel CO2 emissions were altering the climate. An internal company memo from 1982 confirms this and notes that its scientists predicted that climate change would cause global warming of 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade, which is the same as academic and governmental predictions that came out between 1970 and 2007. Do the math, 0.2 C x 7 (decades) = 1.4 C of warming which is exactly what has occurred.
