If you are even remotely interested in EVs then you already know it is the iPace. If you are even remotely interested in a small Jaguar SUV then you will take 5 secs to work out it is the ePace. I dont see any confusion or inconstency. And with some companies car name being virtually incomprehesible and sometimes unpronouncable this seems a pretty small mountain to cross. Im not really enamoured by EVs anyhow. I like to drive and like to go substantial distance and I dont want refuelling to be any kind of limit to when and where I go and it isnt. EVs however are extremely limited in that regard.

Saloons are marked XE, XF, XJ Suv's are E-pace, F-pace, J-pace (if a size above f pace would exist in Jaguars lineup) The electric suv is called I-pace. Mercedes has an E class aswell, do you go on complaining about how you thought that was "electric" aswell?

@Konstantin Ridaya Mercedes does indeed have some complicated naming, so by comparison Jaguar has some pretty straight forward names. Guess the horsepower and fuel type for the D180 engine? That's right, 180hp, Diesel. P300? Exactly, 300hp petrol engine. Now compare that to a Mercedes C 180d. Diesel is correct, but what does 180 stand for? it has 122hp, and a 1.6L engine? Or a C300, yes the lack of a 'd' indicates petrol. But the 300 once again has nothing to do with power or engine displacement. Same story for BMW, and audi and many more car brands. Long story short, if the only confusion Jaguar causes is wether E or I stands for electric, (which becomes obvious as soon as someone is actually interested in buying) they've done a pretty good job at naming their cars.

The 250hp base version costs as much as the bmw x1 20i 190hp base configuration plus the jaguar is better equipped so it's considerably cheaper than the x1. The 25i x1 is like 7k more expensive than the p250 for example and still has a less performant engine. So this p250 looks interesting and the base model is also acceptable well equipped or perhaps few little extra optionals can be added.

I've owned BMW's , Jaguars , Land Rovers and Mercedes. 8 times out of 10 the Jags and Landys offer better value for money and superior fit and finish. Especially when benchmarked to BMW.

Ordered E Pace Chequered Flag P200 3 weeks ago saved £4000 with carwow discount thank you. After having a good look around at the latest BMW, Audi, Mercedes. And was considering another Evoque but expensive compared with the spec on the Chequered Flag. You are all too often obviously a Volvo xc40 fan boy :-) I think you have been unfair on this car; it drives great! You don't state which mode you are driving in? Compact or Dynamic?!! Also, when comparing this vehicle to the xc40 - as you often do elsewhere - it might just be worth mentioning that for the same price you, er, get 4x wheel drive with the Jag? (!!!!). Just a minor detail.

Jaguar/Land-Rover interiors are really behind the curve I think which is such a shame because their cars are very pretty to look at. Cheap looking grey plastics, awful layout, cluttered design. It’s like three different interiors stuffed into one cabin. The use of leather serves to frame this problem rather than hide it. The Velar is nice inside, but it’s not particularly interesting either.

I've had one of these for a week now (Rental while my Focus ST-3 is repaired, apparently this is their idea of a like for like replacement lol) While I agree that the drive is nothing to shout about, it is acceptable for its intended use. It's comfortable and easy to drive and the leather interior on this is beautiful imo. I prefer Hot hatches and saloons, but if somebody gave me one of these tomorrow, I really wouldn't complain.....

Jaguar what have you done...lazy badge engineering from Land Rover...my wife has an F Pace which she loves, as such we had an E pace for two days...the points Matt makes about not feeling like a Jaguar to drive are absolutely correct, also interior is very bland.....we also test drove a BMW X3 a car we have previously disliked...2018 model in M40i now that was very very enjoyable.....come on Jaguar this is a bland Bland car...not good enough

Hi Mat, thank you for that. In the Netherlands, the weight of this car will kill you. Our road taxes are based on weight. For the Diesel version, you pay 190 Euro per MONTH, just for the road taxes.... And of course there is also to CO2 tax.... The 240 HP Diesel base version is 76,000 Euro (without options & in S-trim). Want to laugh? In the Netherlands, Germany and I believe also in Scandinavia the pronunciation of the I-Pace in the local language is the same as the English for the E-pace.... bit confusing.....

People should pronounce international or foreign brands, in the language the brand belongs to. Jaguar should be Jaguar all over the world, same as Volkswagen, Audi, Alfa Romeo or Toyota. And the same logics should be used for those letters that sometimes distinguish the car model. Unfortunately, some people aren’t sufficiently cultured and keep posting their reviews, calling cars with funny names. You’ l often hear germans calling this brand Iaguar instead of Jaguar.....poor boneheads.

Buying a car is like choosing a wife.....Looking for something which take his place in your heart. Aftermath is always different, depends on the luck. I got this car to my wife month ago and will see what was her luck but it drives nice, economy is good for such a heavy SUV and only thing I hope the reliability to match the Toyota cars, which I personally dislike. I have Lexus NX300h and honestly the plastics inside and flimsy built inside was disappointing. Performance is also not good but if you read most of the reviews they all praise this cars,...because they are...Toyotas perhaps! Good job Jaguar. At least something different than ugly BMW's and same looking Audi's.

A little bit of knowledge is dangerous here and he lazily latches onto the established - elsewhere - narrative about the chassis but does not mention that it is 20% stiffer than the evoque's (for a reason ... sport!). This obviously makes it a firmer ride which people who like sportier cars prefer. Being steel the chassis is also much better at off-roading. Its still lighter than the majority of SUVs on the market. Oh, and lets just mention that AWD is virtually standard (unlike the cars he compares it to); but hey, lets all talk about how many water bottles you can store in the doors? WTF? This car's primary target market is not a family of four doing their weekly shopping. The e-pace is a sporty compact SUV; get over it.

Well what do you expect for a 20k car?it's mostly soft touch plastics too unlike the hard plastics in the F pace which costs 3 times as much! And the attention to detail is so much better on the VW, i especially like the felt lined door card pockets so things don't slide around and rattle in there, it's the little things that make the difference

For the verdict part, Matt has done it from narrative point-of-view rather than being there himself. The Jaguar E-Pace does offer fabolous tech-on-board, useful practicality and comfort. Despite that, it is not the best to drive and does not perform like a real Jaguar and I would go for the Range Rover Evoque.
