Today we are celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the E-Type's initial release with an introduction to a very special E-Type that we acquired last Fall.
This is a 1966 Jaguar E-Type OTS (Open Two-Seater) - known in the US as an XKE Roadster. It is truly "the best of the breed" - and a rock solid example of an ALL ORIGINAL AND UNRESTORED Series 1 E-Type. With the 4.2-liter engine, full-synchro close-ratio gearbox, improved braking, more comfortable seats, and better charging system, this is as good as it gets! But wait - there's more! Because the car was originally delivered to Germany, it also has a special order high-speed 2.88 rear end ratio!
But what REALLY makes this one EXTRA special is the fact that it was driven - and lovingly cared for - for only its first 5 years - from new in 1966, to it's "retirement" in 1971... It spent the first 6 years of this retirement in the original owner's father's barn, but was then placed INSIDE the original owners house for the next 44 years!
As a result, this E-Type is an originality GOLD MINE! The car is 99.9% as it left the factory, with only very minor items like spark plugs and other ignition components, tires, and wiper blades ever replaced. AND - due to 44 years of climate control, the condition of all components is very, very good!
This Introduction video takes a look at the car - AS FOUND - including video footage of the first time the car saw the sunlight in 44 (and only the second time in 50...) years! We discuss the history of the car, and take a look at the current condition before we start the clean-up later this Spring.
Come along for the ride as we clean up the car and gently coax it back to life - WITHOUT RESTORING IT - to preserve all of this amazing originality!

Wonderful, I would remove the rear luggage rack. My father, Dennis Pritchard used to take me to Quernmore school, Kent in his oplescent 4.2 coupe. How lucky was I ! Good luck.

I picked one of these up the other day albeit it's a 1968 series 2 FHC. I live near Coventry, England where these cars originated from. Owning one of these beauties is something of a dream.

You should share pictures of the car with Richard Owen of Owen Automotive in Vancouver. He’s a good expert on these. I believe his dad worked in the factory in Coventry. You can find him here on KZbin.

My neighbour was in the airforce in Germany and he bought a 67 e type while serving there with the 288 rear end and the same sincro gear box 4.2 engine and spedo in miles per hour. He returned to Canada in 71 . At that time I had a 67 that I bought new. My car had the US gearing and the two stronburg carbs. It's top speed was only 125 MPH. I sold my car and bought his 67 sertis I.5 I had it up to 155 MPH a number of times . What a blast. It was virtualy the same as yours but British Racing Green, Same lugage rack. The only difference was no covered head lights, Rocker switches not togles and Headrests. I kept the car for a number of years ald loved it. It only had 12 thousand miles on it when I bought it from my neighbour. The airforce flew it back for him in a transport pland. It was common practice for pilots to have special cars flown back home. Great car.

Stunning!! Ive been a fan since the mid 70's as a kid. Never could afford them, and as my budget increased, the prices increased 2 fold, so I never will. I will love to see the project progress, and see the old girl up and eating up the road like it was built to.

That is soooo kool Chuck. Thanks for sharing this story. I guess, I forgot the E's birthday was March 14th? I knew it was 1961. My '67 came was built in June '67, Sadly, the Federales "nix'd" the covered Hd lights by then. But, it does have all of the Series one attributes, including a heated rear window (2+2). IT came with an OEM tool kit and all of the manuals, including the Lubrication chart..

Your excitement brings back awesome memories. I bought my 1962 XKE 3.8 OTS from the original owner who was 92 at the time. He "interviewed" 58 men who wanted to buy the car. Lucky me! It's matching #s. I had looked for an original and the most pure E-Type being a 3.8 for about 10 years! I drive it occasionally, but now more into Rolls Royces! I just subscribed looking forward to you getting the car running! ENJOY! I also love the other XKE in the garage!

Great story, Richard - Thanks for sharing - sounds like it got a good home! Thanks for following along, and thanks for mentioning the other car! That is a June 1967 manual 2+2 - Series 1.25, so it's all Series 1 except for the open headlamps. That car is also very original - 44k original miles. I purchased that one from the second owner in 2013 - he purchased it from the original owner in 1969 when it was 2 years old. Everything is as it left the factory there as well except that it was originally indigo blue and was painted over with that mint green paint in 1971 - something about me and 1971 I guess... I was not wild about the color when I first got it, but it really does grow on you and women LOVE it! I have used that car for countless family drives with the kids over the years, and it has been a really great E-Type. :-)

Great find Chuck, back in the late '70's I picked up a very original 1970 Series 2 2+2, that had been owned by a friends neighbour, it had sat for a long while in a body shop waiting for a new bonnet after a front end crash,(not severe), the owner stipulated the bonnet should be replaced, not repaired. It's original owner, (British Embassy staffer), left Australia before it was completely fixed, I picked up a bargain after the work was done eventually. F. R. W. (Lofty) England, visited Australia sometime in the '80's and visited our Jag Club, he said our S2, 2+2, was one of the nicest original E types he had seen, (even with its brand new replacement bonnet)... Keep your lovely old '66 as original as possible, they weren't the best made cars in the world but certainly the best looking... Subscribed.

Wow Chuck ! Living the dream ! I wonder if Bill actually met Peter Linder . He was sadly killed in a lightweight . As soon as l saw the tin with 'Berger" l know it was paint but, when l trained in a main dealer we used I.C.I . I noticed the curly hubs , and it still retains the push button starter. I too have a '66 in Carmine but it's a 2+2 . However it is a UK car and converted to manual /overdrive , only possible on the 2+2 . ( l live across the pond ) And l'm spoilt with rust.! The only rust l noticed on yours was the o/s/r wheel arch . You may choose to leave that , it's not detrimental to the car. Well, this is an honour to meet you , you're reknown for you passion and knowledge in all things "e"type . Thanks for sharing .

Chuck, you have no idea how pleased I was to see that can of touch up paint in the boot. I knew what it was the instant I saw the name on the can. I had a ‘67 S1.5 years ago when I lived in London, same color - Signal Red I believe, and one of the best colors for the E-Type IMHO. What I didn’t know, or even care about at the time, was who made the paint? Now I know. Why is that important to me? Well I have the same last name as the maker, and people are always pronouncing it incorrectly. The English pronunciation is different - here’s a little English car paint history for your enjoyment kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4DQc5mFl9ydodE

7:18 dont tell me, its his wedding ring, he kept it in the car, also 1966, so its a pre british leeland car then? as we have one, or had one in my hometown kept at a local airport, Dark Green E Type Convertible with a black interior, and unlike the latter cars thanks to it not being made by the BLMC menace, it was actually a good car, the only thing the guy was doing to it was changing the heads to run on unleaded gas. also what did he have for a 'cuda? like it must have been a hell of a car to replace an E Type, like what was it, a 340, 440, 383? convertible, coupe, T/A even?
