If I had the luck of standing in a situation where I could pick either of them, I would go with the drama: The Jaguar - laptimes really don't matter much in the real world, here it is all about how the car makes you feel, and in my opinion the Jaguar got that in spades over the Porsche. Of course the Porsche is amazing as well, nothing drives quite like it as far as I have been told, but those few % extra in drive-capabilities doesn't compare to the drama of the Jaguar - which of course also has to be the V8.

I've driven both recently (along w/ the Jag V8s). The Jags were much more fun on the street and garnered lots of attention. The sound is incredible on the V8S.

Hmm, I'd say it's definitely a handsome car, but not beautiful one. Beautiful Jag's to me are cars like the E-Type, XJ120, early XKR's etc. The F-Type to me seems just a bit too short and a bit too wide. If I'm honest, I much prefer the styling of a hard-top 911.

No surprises here, except how well the new F-type performed as a first run car. 911s have been constantly upgraded for decades, and the F-type is new... The middle F-type model with the more powerful V6 would have been a closer race, but you race what is at the track at the time. Good to see Tiff still hanging it out on the track too...
@bobbarrett2631
@bobbarrett2631 Жыл бұрын
Was this not the middle F-Type model, the S ? Unless the power to weight figures are very similar (the Jaguar weighing in at one hundred and sixty kilogrammes more.) how can you compare, fairly, these two cars? Have to love Tiffs enthusiasm; and what has this man not driven.
@snowman2009

Hers a cold hard fact for you. Porsche is 3 seconds faster. But, how often will you be on a track to test your cars lap time? A lot less times then accelerating from first gear to second on every traffic light and hearing that Divine sound F -Type makes. F-Type looks good, it sounds better and it turns heads a hell of a lot more then another 911 Porsche that looks like every other 911s in the last 20 or so years. F-Type all the way
@mechmat12345

***** Exactly.... wrong. In 20 years when the F-Type is gone it will be remember and a beautiful classic, and the 911 will still be a boring looking douche-mobile.

@rousseau327

Eugene Gostnikov Another cold hard fact: it's not the 3 seconds you want. It's the ability and the manner in which the 911 gets that 3 seconds that matters.

I have seen both on the road; yes, the F-Type is a real head-turner in terms of exhaust sound and looks. Yet, the 911 has an undying appeal, a breathtaking minimalist design that is only appreciated by a true Porschephile; just look at its proportions and (perhaps) you might understand why Porsche doesn't need to change its design. Allow me to digress, have a look at Apple's design, they don't change something that is good - change is always subtle and incremental but never drastic. Porsche's design is quite understated, and it really doesn't need to go blitz, it's a car that screams "Nothing to prove!" Those who buy cars just for the sake of looks or attention are simply those who have no clue about cars!

"In Top Gear". Great argument. A show which sole purpose it is to entertain, not to give serious reviews on cars. The fact that there are even some reviewers that called the GTR boring speaks for itself, since I haven't heared ANYONE call a Porsche 911 boring. The 911 IS the benchmark. And it IS more fun to drive than a GTR. The GTR, just like many other sports cars, was designed with the 911 in mind. That, my friend, is THE definition of a benchmark car.

I'm not really a 911 fan, but I like the looks of the 991, and this evolution Porsche has taken to the design, and the driving characteristics. I respect the progress, and driving dynamics. As for the GT-R vs 911 debate; architects and engineers have been making precise calculations (911) long before calculators arrived (GT-R). BTW: 1:33 LF wheel catching air, slight rallying in a 911. YES!!!
@Canadian1st
@Canadian1st 11 жыл бұрын
They may not have had the option to test the V8S though I think that puts the price above a base 911 (i dont know prices for each). From what I've read, Jag intends to try and pull clientele from those who would be considering either a Boxster or a 911. The engines for the F-Type are what decide those price ranges and comparisons. I dont see it working as they see it, but they also dont want to release two sport roadsters and have both flop.

Porsche had a significant power to weight advantage. Would have been interesting to see the V8 or spend 1k on the V6 (shortened pulley and remap to 450bhp). I know there's always the argument you can modify the 911, but they're hard to extract power from without spending a hell of a lot as they're N/A

Yup. That rear end with the taillight design is by far one of the more stunning car design out there ATM besides the more Super/Hyper car realm (IE Aventador/LaFerrari/P1/etc etc). The Porsche on the other hand is handsome and is classic but for NOW the F-Type is the much more stunning car.

Zeiss120 Jaguar have a really good line up . There was a time when Jaguar used to to remind me of the XK or the horrible looking S-Type . But their current models are stunning . The XJ has much more road presence than a boring S-Class or an A8 . I have seen an XJ turn heads while people don't really bother about an equally posh Merc ,BMW or Audi . The F-type is probably the most interesting looking new car . Even a Lambo , Porsche or a Zonda aren't as interesting since we kinda know what to expect . The F-type looks new and fresh .

I've driven Jaguars for long enough to have owned four of them and never had any problems at all. One of the most trouble free cars that I have ever owned. All of my GM cars had trouble. I think price plus options is a bit of an issue. I'm considering a V6 S against a Boxster S or Cayman S plus options because when you finish speccing up a Porsche to a decent level, eg including PASM, infotainment system and decent speakers, leather on dashboard, sport chrono etc, the price of a Porsche becomes a bit nuts. Whereas the Jag comes with a lot of standard stuff - the differential for example is standard. The 911 with decent options is on a totally different planet price-wise..

Great video. Why doesn't Jaguar offer a manual option on the F type? If they did this comparison may have worked out a little differently. The manual gear box would cut the weight of the car significantly, improving the braking and handling. Who knows it may have even beaten the Porsche

Really if they were comparing an ftype against a 911 it shouldve been the v8s so the prices were similar. as it is there is a 15k base price difference, or about 19% which isnt insignificant. the v8s and 911 cabrio are only 4k apart.

Good Test. The new Jag looks and sounds very good - Don´t like the open 911 much for looks, Boxter or Caymen look better and more fresh as open tops. Don´t get me wrong i quite like the new 911/991 with a roof on - one of the best looking Porsches for a long time. In this battle 3 Seconds is quite a difference though. I would like to see a test if either car can loose the other. One will properly be quite happy on any given summer day driving one of these - Think I would take the F for that.

I don't think they were using price as the matching point. It's the performance numbers. The V6S has a supercharged 3.0L V6 engine that bumps the hp from 340-380. The Porsche only had 350hp but since the Jaguar weighs more, it evens out the slight advantage the Jaguar has in horsepower. A track test is obviously comparing performance and in this review, the point was the Jaguar has some work to do it wants to overtake or even match the 911.

Wow what a nice car the F-type is! Superb looks and style. Love the sound coming from that engine. It is a more masculine design, and i think that most buyers never comes close to the track and therefore the F-type should be a success. If i had the money too spend i would buy the 911, partly because of its history and primerly because its a "proper drivers" car. That in my book is key to decide what car to buy. I think Tiff could squeeze a second out of the Jag with some extra training

F-type V8 S vs Carrera S is the only way to properly compare these two cars. V6 S is the Boxter/Cayman fighter, and from the looks of it the 911 they had was a standard Carrera with one or two performance options. Not saying this will change the overall out come, but these two cars are on 2 totally different performance levels.
