The 2020 XE S is without a doubt the best looking car in the segment. It is also so much rarer and special than the 1000s of A4s, 3 Series and C Classes puttering about on every roadway. I find it drives better than an A 4 and a C Class and is much more comfortable than a 3 Series and an Alfa Romeo Giulia. The interior is just a great place to be and the exterior is timeless style. Like James Bond, the Jaguar is not always the strongest or fastest but it is without any doubt the most sophisticated and well rounded vehicle that never is out of place. It combines sport and comfort like no other car in this class and arguably it does so with gorgeous drop dead good looks. I agree that Jaguar should have kept the supercharged V6 for at least 2019-20 to power this refreshed model as that is the only advantage the 2015-16 version of the XE can hold over the 2020 model. That said, your review was both fair and comprehensive so Bravo Zulu. The Jaguar, like the Royal Navy, may not be the most powerful, but it still has plenty of gravitas and competence.

I thought they were going to discontinue the XE model?.. I quite like the exterior. It's just the interior that lets it down a bit. I'd buy one, even though it's not as polished as other brands like Mercedes BMW and Audi

They discontinued the XE line in North America after the 2020 XE (which is what I own and oddly looks exactly like the car in this video 😅). But this guy's in Australia and they haven't discontinued the XE there yet hence a 2022 model. If you are looking for an XE and are on a budget, look for the 2020 model as nothing has really changed aside from the engine options- 2020 came with a 250 and 300 HP 4 cylinder and 2022 has it only available in a 300 HP 4 cylinder in Australia

Thanks John - firstly well done to you, Tom and the team on getting to 100,000 subscribers - richly deserved. I agree with your conclusion, it is really attractive in that Inspector Morse way - a dark red with black interior would look great. I did think of this car but I don’t have the courage for the perceived depreciation and reliability. I can’t help but feel that this car is coming to an end soon without replacement. Globally it is not a volume seller and by cutting back on models for the XE, this is likely to be an ever decreasing sales success. I guess the world is changing for small executive saloons. I have followed Tom’s advice and gone for a 2019 BMW F20 118i as this is a dying breed as well. Just trying to hold onto the past.

My partners Father waited for his brand new XE to come over from the production lines in the UK for roughly 14 months. Such a nice car to be a passenger in… I love the power of the turbo engine… you’re right about the back seats, not really design for us full sized adults. I’m yet to drive the XE… hopefully soon. Nice review, John. Looks good inside out. However, Jags are not well known for their reliability. Cars like Benz, Jags, BMWs are short term keeps. I would buy the Lexus ES OR IS for better ownership experience.

@@paulwoodhead5001 JAG was one of the cars owned by my family. Had electrical issues. But that was a while back. We really hope the new Jags are better. We really liked the JAG to be honest. It drove beautifully. JAGs aren't cheap cars to maintain especially when something goes wrong. Just Another Grand (JAG) when something does go wrong. Having said this we do hope the brand does better in the future on the reliability front. Thats the only thing holding it back. The day Jaguar breaks into the top 5 most reliable luxury cars, they will become more popular than the likes of BMW and MERCs. Genesis sales have started picking up across the globe even though Genesis is a lesser known brand than the JAG. Perhaps it may have something to do with reliability and ownership experience. Who knows!?

IV just purchased a 330i m sport coming from a Mercedes Benz. Whilst I don't find idrive nearly as good as MBUX what I can say both cars are miles ahead of this in interior and design. I think something to comment on though is the horrific fuel efficiency of this car. The 330i with a 5.7 second 0-100 time and plenty of power easily averages 5.6L around city driving with eco mode and more spirited driving taking it up to 9L in comfort. Yet to try sport as it's still in its break in period. In comparison the a250 4matic hatch with less power and a smaller vehicle sat at no less then an average of 12L per 100km as it's long term average and in day to day driving it didn't ever seem to drop below 9 with gentle driving and highway drives from Sydney to Melbourne saw 6.0L.on the freeway. The way BMW have perfected the efficiency on the 330i with more power and performance is truely incredible. Everytime I drive and see the fuel read out and the km left to empty it's like owning a diesel with its efficiency. Something I never expected when purchasing the car.

@@nizm0man I agree, we where shocked when they said 25,000km between services but we really only did around 15,000km a year between the yearly interval. The Mercedes was a fun zoomy car but it had a few downfalls like you had to drive over the speed bumps at 2km an hour if you didn't want to leave your front end behind and it was very hard suspension. I personally found the sport seats too hard for long trips too We had a few issues with the car putting itself into neutral on its own which was quite dangerous. They couldn't fix it even though they had the fix for it due to regulations so in the end we handed the car back after two years. The sunroof rattled as well which drove me insane and on occasion with harsh acceleration the dual clutch would lurch you back in your seat and forward and it was a bit annoying. It had its flaws but as a car I loved it. I was very sad to have no other option but being told we can't fix it and to return the car. However in the two years we had it, it spent a lot of time getting taken in for stupid things. Airbag faults, the going into neutral which they couldn't put the update for software onto due to regulations of adding the software onto a car that alters it due to the diesel scandal which was a real shame because they had the fix, Germany just said we cannot do it. It also would drain it's battery if not driven and we had no stop start for six months until they swapped out the faulty battery after a year. It wasn't free from problems. The grip on that car in the wet was really very good. I never once lost any traction and I was always confident behind the wheel. I still miss the gear selector on the wheel. I'm sure I'll adjust as IV only had the BMW for 2 weeks but the on steering wheel gear selector was just so convenient! Especially for tight quick turns in a car park, having the gear selector at your hand and not having to fiddle around with moving your hand off the wheel was the best. We did want to get the upcoming C class to replace it but it has been delayed and we needed a car. As a whole though, despite the issues I still am missing it. My partner and I both use the car and we liked the app on the Mercedes. On the BMW two people cannot use the app. It only allows you to have one person linked onto the same vehicle. The BMW assistant doesn't open the sun roof or change climate temperatures if the air con isn't already on. It has quite a few things missing that the Mercedes had even fully loaded with options.

@@lukiejames I have a G20 330i too. I just request an extra oil change every time i'm in for a service. Happy to pay the $200 or so it takes for a peace of mind. No matter what the dealership says, I refuse to accept a 30k oil change.

@@andrew22334455 I’m not sure where you are located but in Australia, I’m pretty sure the computer in the menu says 15,000km on the bmw. I haven’t been well so I haven’t had much time to look at it or drive the car but I have a suspicion I did see it when I was looking for a setting for something. I am with you 100 percent. No way would I leave a car go for that long. You only have to see the colour of the oil after 10/15 thousand km to know that 30,000 is not a good idea even if they claim it’s possible. I never was too worried though because the Mercedes’ got driven around 13ish maybe 15 thousand a year and so even though it never hit the 25,000 service cap, the yearly time frame would tick over and it would get its full service in the same amount of km driven as other cars I have owned. If I was doing more though I would have done what you suggested and got an interim oil change just to keep the engine happy.

In the ranking of decent sedans (TOP 500 SEDANS) with a trunk capacity above 500 liters or 17.6 cubic feet it does not enter. @@avaliacarros7739 I really don’t think I am the exception. Most younger professional people I know almost universally drive something like an XE. More common are C-classes and 3-series, but the point remains. I think the point of something like an XE is more that you CAN carry people if you really need to, but it’s still great to drive (which it is). Besides, most people like me have a partner who probably has a sensible SUV anyway. And I do have a 2-door coupe as well, but that’s a weekend car, so not something I drive to work in. As for why I haven’t gotten a Mustang, Camaro or Challenger, that’s because the only thing worse for your health than American food is American cars. Whenever I’ve driven anything from the US, I’m horrified at the build quality, fuel economy, cost to run, lack of luxury features, lack of customer support in my country (Australia), and how loud and vulgar they are. Rocking up in a Camaro in Australia is like arriving at a dinner party in arseless leather chaps and a cowboy hat. People think you’re a massive tool. All of this is why every US car maker stopped manufacturing here a few years ago, and their market share has shrunk to the point where they’re probably gonna cease selling here altogether. It really just came down to the fact that people here weren’t interested in buying a GM or ford with 1950’s mechanicals when they could buy something faster, better on fuel, cheaper and better built from Europe with a longer warranty and better product support anyway.
