Today, courtesy of good guy and Jaguar fan David I get to drive the wild and wacky Project 8. Based on the XE, Jaguar's smallest car, the Project 8 takes the 5L Supercharged V8 from the F-Type SVR, turns it up to 11 and shoehorns it into a car never designed for it. Just how good is this limited run special?

I’ve had mine for over a year… put over 3k miles on it, most of them rally miles. It’s a beast. As quick as anything else on the rally and I can carry all their luggage too. If the real purpose of a car is to transport people and their belongings from point A to point B, nothing does that better than the P8.

I am the guy that invited David out in my 7 & 8, which then made him empty his car fund. I can’t understand why people get so hung up about sitting on left, I soon adjust my driving style to suit and just get on with it, if I could use it as my daily drive I would, but it’s not so good on a biulding site with the carbon bits. I have taken my 8 on to the track and it certainly holds its own and in the hands of a professional driver it’s something to behold. But having spent the weekend getting the car ready to drive off to Italy, I know I will get a really smug feeling when I exit the shuttle and the signs say remember to drive on the left!

Same. Lived in Germany for 8 years and now much prefer driving from the left hand seat. If you fly, this is the PIC seat as well, so the right hand seat really is the second best spot. MY problem with the 8 and 9 is that they’re automatics - sitting on the left doesn’t bother me at all. In the 8’s case, for that engine, chassis and those looks, I could probably maybe possibly in a weak moment even accept the gearbox.

I’m a huge fan of the ajv8. Sold my f-type r and ordered a new f-pace svr for new dad duties. The reason it’s lhd is because of where jag mount the front diff. Yes the 6 and 8 short blocks are same size, that was a fun debate on the jag forums many moons ago, but you cannot buy a rhd v6 awd either. I only wish jag had waited for the xe facelift before doing this special edition, then I’d be buying one out of EU. The recent facelifts of xe and xf, but especially f-pace, catapult this brand into a different league now and a true, and in some ways better, rival to the ubiquitous Germans. Also you actually want a torque converter auto in a positive displacement supercharged engine due to how the engine makes power off idle, dct’s by design are more laggy off the line and best suited to NA or turbo engines

As someone who is (potentially) looking at a used XE S (with the V6) I've noticed there is one with awd currently on autotrader. Are you saying that is a listing mistake by the dealer? I did wonder, as I've been browsing for a while and never noticed any others with awd!

Thank you for this review! I agree with almost what you said. I am not a JAG man In general, but I do own a project eight that I bought in July 2021. In fact, I bought the last brand-new, previously untitled Project 8 in the United States that were still in a dealers showroom. Overall, the car is amazing. What makes an amazing is driving dynamics, suspension set up the amazing exterior styling. As far as your initial question regarding how it compares to a GT3, I guess it depends on which specifications and generation of GT3 you are talking about. To me, it is definitely better than the 991.1 GT3. It is not as good as the 991.2 GT3RS what is it is definitely a lot more special as far as the rarity of the car. I own a 991.2 GT3 touring and I believe there’s a two cars of probably on par overall and, the Jaguars definitely a lot more stable at higher speeds because my Porsche does not have a wing.. On track, I can tell you that last fall, we took my jaguar in by GT4 PDK car to ROEBLING Rd., Raceway in Georgia and every single one of us was faster in the Jaguar than the GT4 on Michelin CUP2 tires. finally, I recently became a proud owner of a brand new M5CS. BMW is clearly faster, especially at higher speeds. However, due to its smaller size, more aggressive and more meaty tire sizes in the back and a more track suspension set up, jaguar definitely feels more nimble and more special. Jaguar is definitely the best sedan I’ve ever owned and in my little collection, it falls behind only the magnificent 997.2 GT3RS, the Scuderia, and the STO. I would rate just above the 991.2 GT3 TOURING and my Heritage GT350R.

Not sure about the cat stickers. Looks a little too “tuner” for me. Beast of a car though. I suspect it is left hand drive simply because as you said with the packaging they probably had to choose one side or the other. For a Supercharged V8 saloon with AWD, and heavy duty transmission and large brakes etc 1725 kg is an acceptable weight. Remember it wasn't build as a race car but rather a converted production car. Also you'll find that a Supercharged XJR is 200 kg heavier, and it's only RWD.

I think there were 2 other reasons it didn't sell. There was never an M3/RS4/C63 version of the XE so this car represented a huge leap over the standard car which a lot of people found difficult to get their heads around. Would you buy a £150k version of a Vauxhall Insignia no matter how good it was ? And the decals were awful. I know they were a no cost delete option, but gave the whole project a Max Power whiff about it.... Not sure it would sell even now. Certainly current second hand values are nothing special. When a car is perceived as "failing" it takes a long time for market sentiment to change usually. Look how long it took for XJ220 values to rise.....

Thanks for a great review, there is not much good video about on the Project 8 and it has obviously attracted quite a few owners! I bought mine earlier in the year and I love it. It replaced a Giulia Qadrifoglio and it is a much better developed car. Day one with the Giulia and I was already writing a list of things that needed improving (exhaust, crap Pirelli track tyres, fix the brake feel problem etc.) My list for the Project 8 is precisely zero. Because it is not turbocharged the engine has a level of get up and go at any speed that the Ferrari derived engine in the Giulia simply can't match. It also handles better and gives you a greater level of confidence on road because of the 4WD and bespoke suspension. Most cars have now done somewhere around 2,000 to 4,000 miles at the moment and are selling at auction for around £100K or £115-£120K through a dealer. Future values? Just remember Jaguar built 75 D Types in total in the 1950s and had a hard time selling all of them! The Project 8 is truly one of the last great V8s and I plan to keep mine for a long time.

@Jay. I love the Project 8, but also love the Project 7. I each please. LOL I was wondering about the Special Race/Track P8 that did not sell at the Silverstone Auction. Do you have any links so I can see what it looks like? David's blue looks amazing, but I also really like Harry's eggplant purple :)

What’s this, been given the keys to Harry’s garage? Expecting an XJC next. I love those. I know these aren’t Harry’s. Just don’t expect to see the Project cars in back to back videos unless they’re his.

Fantastic review Jay, the exterior design language is unquestionably motorsports with brilliant signature Jag V8 rasp, however the interior design or lack of it is very lacklustre, cheap plasticky. Alfa Giulia Quad will be a good alternative for me.

Sadly, Jaguar is a dead brand. The next iteration will be all built on a shared platform with land rover and all will be electric. So what will be the point in owning one? The answer of course is that there will be no point at all and the badge will cease to exist. As such, these amazing cars will be joining TVR as relics of a bygone time.

@@JayEmmOnCars i honestly believe that you two guys can produce amazing content not just because he owns this model from Jaguar, but more because you have amazing presenting skills compact information presented in a very efficient way with of course some jokes alongside.. for me as a non-British person you two making a video covering any car brand or model will be just a lot of fun… :)

What I don't understand is why they couldn't fit the V8 when the V6 supposedly has the same dimensions? There's a plenty of people online, Jay included, denigrating the V6 as a V8 with 2 blanked out cylinders..."its the same size why bother blah blah"

I saw you in someone else's video on a track day, that has crossed over to your channel, you get it now 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I appreciate your effort to understand what an RT Car is to Track lovers, cause you use to drive me crazy with you expectations that had nothing to do with an RT Cars purpose, especially the classics you would get your hands on 👍🏾

I find the more you drive on the wrong side the easier it gets as your brain gets used to the picture it sees, also this would be a great car for touring holidays across Europe, so you could justify it as a second or third car

05:52 I presume one reason why they couldn't fix light weight fixed buckets in a 4 seater car is due to safety regulations. they would have to crash them for rear passengers, which I presume will be very difficult and EXPENSIVE to pass.

Feels sacrilegious to me that Jaguar, a British company, (without going into ownership details!) produces a car in only left hand drive. If Porsche did the same thing with a limited edition product in only right hand drive, I don't think ze germans would be too happy about it.

Hi and I think your 100% correct Jag should have made them in right hand drive too and I don’t believe that story too that the V8 wouldn’t fit in a right hand drive either
