You'd do well to get a cup style oil filter wrench, the notched kind that grips the filter by fitting into the notches. Most of them work with a 3/8 inch drive ratchet, and an extension, which you'd need on your V12. That's the arrangement I've used since back in my beater days. I still use it now on my econoboxes. And, if the ship ever comes in, that's what I'll use on my limo. ;)

Thank you for the inspiration Adam! When changing oil/filter today I replaced the leaky oil pan gasket (+Hylomar blue) as well. 154 minutes for a rookie in "the OKQ8 GDS hall".(-87 Daimler Double six)

A nice clean sump you have there. It's always a good practice when doing an oil change, on any car, to have copious amounts of newspapers on the floor and to have the receptacle for the old oil quite far back from the drain hole when you first remove the plug to ensure the oil is caught, otherwise you might find that you have a bit of a mess to clear up from your once pristine floor.

The oil with high Zink content is important for breaking an engine in, especially with new camshafts. After the break in is completed (300-500km) you can return to synthetic oil. That information ist from Total Seal Piston Ring manufacturer and from Driven (break in oil manuf.)

You are using the old style pan gasket and bolts. The replacement gasket is made by Earling in Germany and is made out of aluminum with rubber on both sides, no sealant should be used. The bolts were changed to a flanged bolt with locking serrations under the head.

Do you have a part number? I've just looked through the Earling online catalog and no gaskets for the V12 where found. Maybe they have discontinued them.

Great video, you've helped me hugely on my 1991 XJS. Did you use the replacement gasket shown at the start? Or did you put the gasket on the Hylomar blue and then some more on the top of the gasket before going back onto the car? Or just used Hylomar and no gasket?

Useful video. I was looking at doing this on my 89 V12 coupe, but when I looked under the car, it looks to be impossible to remove several of the oil sump bolts towards the front edge. The steering rack is so close, I don't know how you would be able to get access to these bolts. You kind of jump this bit in the video! Any tricks or advice on how to do this without removing the steering rack?

If I can answer my own question! You can do it, you just need to remove the spacers that keep the oil pipes separated from the steering rack...it's a squeeze and you need to pry those tubes out of the way to get a socket in to remove the three bolts in question.

Hi I’m wanting to do an oil change on my 1983 Jaguar XJ6 Series 3 - 4.2L, I already have a new Jaguar oil filter and new sump gasket but what oil would you recommend as I’m not sure what oil has been used in the engine over the years and I’ve been getting mixed opinions some saying only use mineral because synthetic cause leaks and some saying that was only the early synthetic that caused leaks and some Saying use only synthetic oil as is cleans and protects from sludge build up better would really appreciate if you could help out here or anyone else who knows thanks in advance

I purchased the Hylomar Blue from Amazon in the US which is where I reside . I used it once and cleaned off the cap and tube and screwed cap back on . A few days later tried to squeeze out some for another application and the bottom of the tube blew out . Is there a special way to secure the cap and tube that will prevent the tube from blowiing out at the bottom of the tube ?

Ya that was one of the worst momentd of working on cars. The head will be coming off. Decided to do a full rebuild of that engine so it will be coming out this spring

I might've missed something while watching your video. I saw you removed the old rubber on the oil pan, but didn't notice you replaced it with a new one. (only the blue glue tube thing)

In stock for the I prefer the pre-HE. It's a lot smoother and revs nicer. The HE in this XJS is a bit modified with a better intake and more flowing exhaust. It's really a blast to drive

Some in the jag-lovers forum recommend using RTV instead of a gasket (not in addition to one). Any thoughts?

The gasket and Hylomar has worked well for me. So far never had a leak on a car again

i wish you were in Canada come help me with my v12 87' , I put stop leak in my radiatior and it gunked up my chain from what i can see, and then who knows what else it looks like im going to be replacing a head gasket, im thinking i should definatly flush the engine oil asap, probably twice, run it a few time inbetween flushes?? im not really sure what would you sugust. im thining i might have to pop the head of and get down to the engine head, to replace the gasket, is that the only way coolant can get in around your timing chain?????

I think the SAE mentioned for the ratchet was for the head size, not the socket size

Gaskets have bonding agents on them. If you use any type of sealant on them they WILL fail! it doesn't matter how many times you tell people this they never listen. smh.......
