Jaguar XK8 - Update: J-Gate Fix and ABS Warning Root Cause

An update on my Jaguar XK8 where I finally resolve my J-Gate issues! Also, my recent trip to Wales threw up another problem with the ABS which I've since found the root cause for. So now the Jag is 'kind-of' fixed its time to thrash it a bit!

Watching your vlogs goes part way to alleviating my frustration for not driving mine at the mo - rain, rain, rain! Keep em coming... Saying that, if I get diagnosed with coronavirus I'm going to self isolate in my jag for 2 weeks, driving round endlessly whatever the weather! ;)

I have exactly the same J-Gate problem so thanks for this. I realise you made it a long time ago. It is quite reassuring to see an obviously intelligent and eloquent man driving through tunnels to enjoy the sound. Makes me feel better because I do the same in mine, but I am a lot older! Hi, Just purchased an 04 XK8 and guess what - flashing gear selector.... and no sport button..... Thank you for doing this video, couldn’t get the linear switch off, not even the cover - how did you do that!! But did manage to get a cotton bud with Allsop cleaning solution in between the cover and circuit board and hay presto it worked.... If ever we meet at a car show etc I owe you at least a drink.... Also what a car... Regards John P

Lovely! Your Jag really roars. In regards to the electrical gremlins, if you pull up the J-gate wood trim, there's a part below which is engraved 'Lucus'--Go figure!

Hi, Great videos. I have a 2004 XK8 as well (carnival red with dashboard instruments😁, but no cup holders☹️, something you miss if you don’t have them). I have the same linear switch issue and up until your vids I didn’t know that I owned a linear switch? Having watched your efforts to fix the problem I think I’m just going to get the garage to replace it at the next service. Keep up the good work.

...Next time those contacts dry out use WD-40 instead of contact cleaner and it will keep it working way longer...

@@interactapp9350 I'm curious too. I put the Mina under axle on mine, like it a lot but could still be a bit more "pronounced". Don't want really loud like to hear it. I'm thinking a bit less restrictive center muffler could be in order. OEM cats are probably going to stay.

Nice to see another channel promoting the XK8. I have a 02 convertible and love it. As I live in Southern California I drive it more in the winter then I do in the Summer, too hot. Haven't done my exhaust yet, but after listening to yours, and being isolated, might get to work on it. Just curious, aren't you afraid of hitting some stray sheep on those narrow roads? I was over there last July and this past January and when I was driving on some of those roads I saw a lot of them by the side of the road.

Driving a convertible in California sounds pretty ideal sitting here in cold, damp Britain 🤣 There were a few stray sheep in Wales when I went there but not around near where I live, the occasional horse but generally the visibility is good of the road ahead and I’m a reasonably careful driver, even though the noise is dramatic the speed is under the limit 😎

@@granblogismo I was in Winchester during storm Brendan and it was cold and wet. I never tell people I drive under the limit when driving the Jag. I have a client from the UK who is over here now and he kids me about the Jag being a "old mans car", so I always remind him how fast I can drive circles around his 911. I almost have him convinced.

Great videos. Your XK8 has unusual trim, are the chrome interior door escutcheons aftermarket? They're normally just plastic, even on the special editions

Yeah a few people have commented on those, I have no idea where they came from, I’m assuming aftermarket, possibly Arden as the car came with some other bits from them but they don’t seem to sell them any more

Hi I have picked up my xk8 coupe my 2005 today, just one thing doing maybe 60/70 I can hear the air/breeze from inside the car and windows are down and it is a coupe is that right ? can any one advise please

Do you mean the windows are up/closed? If the windows are down then yes you certainly would hear the air/breeze! If they are up it could be a bad window or door seal or potentially you need to reset the window positions if the car has been standing a while as the battery might have discharged and lost the setting

Yeah so you’ll know if the windows need resetting if when you open the door the glass drops but doesn’t go back up when you close it, to reset you wind down to lowest position and hold the switch until a ‘click’ is heard in the door, then same winding them up, hold the switch until a click is heard. Doesn’t sound like this is your issue though as the window being down slightly is noticeable

Mine came with two normal keys and two fobs, it also came with a dark green ‘valet’ key which I think is the normal set

What wheels are on your XK8? They look like Sepangs but don't seem to have the trim rings. I quite like them, especially since Sepangs sell for $2,000-3000 per set.

Hi! The wheels on mine are the ‘Atlas’ wheels which are 19”, the Sepangs are 20” I believe? I really like the Sepangs actually and the Montreals but you’re right that they are very expensive even second hand! The Atlas ones like mine shouldn’t be too much I wouldn’t have thought 🤷🏻‍♂️

granblogismo if you get the larger wheels my understanding is you may as well lower the car, damages the ride, however I agree, I think the OEM BBS wheels look better than any after market wheels I've seen before. If they made them in 19s I'd probably fork over the $2k for a set next time I need tires. Rather than molest my XK8 into a sports car I may buy a very late (last years) XKR(-S) if I can find one in racing green in 2 or 3 years

Yeah I’ve heard mixed feedback about the 20 inch wheels, some say ride is fine others disagree 🤷🏻‍♂️ but since they are a fortune and I quite like mine I don’t think I’ll change them!

Yep that’s the one I used! Worked perfectly for my XK8 which is registered 2004 but could have been a late 2003 build 😎👍

Thanks for the comment, manual gearbox would make the drive more engaging but I think the XK8 is well suited to an auto due to its GT nature rather than being a sports car, an XKR maybe?! There used to be a kit but cost nearly 10k so perhaps not a practical conversion!
