I'm not in the sport. Simply an admirer. Here, in Staten Island N.Y., I see lot's of Red Tail, and some falcon. I'm told that there's Bald Eagle. I've even seen photo's. I don't know anyone who's involved with Falconry. I've never seen a Cooper Hawk. He's exquisite. Rapid growth. Quick learner. And he appears to be faster than all of the other birds I've seen on Falconry videos. He has an infectious cry. I can't help but want to respond to him. And the way you whistle and he responds! Whoa. That is an impressive bird of prey. Smart. Wishing you Best results in breaking those few bad habits. He's submissive, yet bravado. That bird's got swagger! Ivan the Terrible!

Cooper's hawks I found always more voicestres than other species. Also very high strung and a bit nervous. The aggressive thing is also not only your bird . Great job on your training enjoyed your footage. Thanks for sharing 👍

The one in my yard sure seems friendly and unafraid of humans. She cheeps at me like the mother in this video when I scold her for scoping out my chickens. She even walks on the ground with us a few feet away, it's so weird.

rytram prophet if you get them as a baby, they usually work out. They don’t always work out if you trap them when they are older.

Awwww. I love that you let Gisele raise Ivan! He seems like he enjoyed being in the nest with her! I’m studying to become a falconer and have been watching videos about it for a while! The hacking thing seems pretty interesting. Even though I’m not sure I’d ever get an eyass just because of how hard it can be if they become too imprinted on you. But what’s it like to raise and train an eyass? Is it a really hard thing to do like I hear it is?

sir it doesnt matter if ivan dont take diet for now .. he is young .. it will become ur advantage when it come in hard hunting activities . also try them to hunt above water surfaces .. it helps them more ..

He comes to the glove very well. I'm looking to trap a brancher or early passage next year but I have only ever seen them trained on lures for recall with minimal use of the glove. How did you achieve that or is it because he's an imprint? I'm still an apprentice so I have a lot to learn but can't wait to get into accipiters

This is awesome. It must have required some huge patience to do this. So, what's the reason for the magic carpet?

The theory behind the magic carpet is to assist with being able to catch multiples of game within the same hunting session while reducing the chance of possession or aggression on the kill. It helps to measure out the amount of reward they get per kill and you can continue hunting afterwards.

What does putting him up for the molt mean? Do you have some influence over him molting?

Molt is when they shed their juvenile feathers. And no the falconer doesn't have any say over that.

Did you diagnose root cause of hand aggression? What did you do to minimize?

The hand aggression went away very quickly. Eventually my issue became a bit of carrying. I believe I did 3 things incorrectly that caused both problems. 1) I dropped his weight too quickly. I did this because he started not responding well to returning when out at hack. I should have just ended the hack early I think. 2) I was too quick with trade offs. I should have given him more time to pluck his kills. I was concerned with carrying, so I made in fairly quickly, but I think I was too quick. 3) I didn’t provide enough slips for him initially that were catchable. We were in very difficult terrain and so he didn’t catch something everyday. There was a lot of time in between slips as well. I should have done a better job providing him with more frequent opportunities.

@@jaguartrev1 yeah you look like you are in cali. I have roller pigeons and they get attacked by Coopers sadly. I am trying to learn all i can about them to avoid having my pigeons being killed. what can you share? Is there a time of year that they hunt less or leave the area? I found April to Sept to be better, and flying my pigeons in the middle of the day after the Coopers have eaten and before they look for dinner. Is there a time when they are not raising young and not so aggressive>?

Sean Kirkpatrick they usually have babies in the late spring or early summer. Then the young birds are learning how to hunt from about September to December and also will get kicked out of the area by the parental pair around that time or in January/February. There is also the fall migration of a lot of hawks and falcons that are migrating south ahead of winter, and then a return migration in spring. Not really sure what can be done to avoid Cooper’s hawks attacking but clear airspace is a definite plus. Cooper’s hawks are ambush predators and like to check out what they are hunting from a nearby perch. I had my father move his pigeon coop to the other side of the yard away from a tall pine tree and that reduced some of his losses. Best of luck.

Sean Kirkpatrick I wouldn’t necessarily say that. If you have a resident pair of Cooper’s hawks, that’s when they are nesting and raising young. So they will end up coming to visit your pigeons daily to have a consistent food source for their chicks.

Nugsy Malone that is tough. It’s easier to train them on the sight picture of what you do want them to hunt. Best to avoid places with a large amount of what you don’t want them to hunt. With Giselle, I have fields where we are hunting cottontail rabbit but towards the end of the hunting season a lot of ground-squirrels start appearing. I end up not hunting those fields towards the end of the season because she starts catching ground-squirrels instead of rabbits since they are easier to catch.
