A Saurya Airlines plane carrying 17 airline staff and two crew members crashed shortly after takeoff from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Wednesday, killing all but one person on board.
The aircraft, a CRJ7, was en route to Pokhara when it caught fire and crashed near the runway. The sole survivor, the pilot, has been hospitalized.
Rescue and recovery operations are underway at the crash site. An investigation into the cause of the accident has been initiated.
This is the latest in a series of fatal plane crashes in Nepal, highlighting the challenges of air travel in the mountainous country.
