Jah Wobble ‘Riding The Sonic Boom To Heaven’ Interview by Iain McNay.
Jah Wobble was the original bass player in the band, Public Image Limited (PIL), which was formed by former Sex-pistols singer John Lydon (Rotten). He was 17 when he joined the band. He came from a tough and at times violent East London background. When he was young he developed a taste for short wave radio oscillations; they put him into a stat...e of trance and he could sleep better. 'It felt like listening to infinity.' From an early age he had strong spiritual bent, he discovered the Upanishads and was captivated by ancient teachings. Music, especially the bass guitar and his spiritual life became indelibly intertwined. 'When you truly accept the bass as an emanation of God as the ground of existence you make a friend of impermanence, a state of flux, therefore the fear of losing what you have diminishes.you truly ride the rhythm - you will reside in the residence of 'OM' you can ride the sonic boom to heaven.' 'My bass playing relies first and foremost on intuition - it is necessary to remain innocent - intuition is directed from the solar plexus - the knowing sun in the guts.' After years on the road with bands he became an alcoholic, 'Whenever I drank all the fear disappeared and the tension left my body' but he couldn't go on like that and became completely burnt out. His Marriage broke up and he was left with crushing sense of failure. After joining AA and finding a real depth in his spiritual path life, 'I found I was grateful for every drink and drug I had taken because it was because of them I now had a beautiful and stable life which in turn led to a great productivity. I felt really alive and sensitised, I had simply grasped what it is to be human. Everything in life was sort of emptying out and becoming simpler. I was now at the stage of developing a meditative mind. There came a point where there was no difference between making music and spirituality - the world might have been getting crazier but I was getting better.'

Jah’s bass explorations have always been fascinating, I’ve followed his since I found Full Circle, the album he did with members of Can, his distinctive bass playing for The Orb, Primal Scream, & of course his own bands have always drawn you in, my absolute favourite is the one on Visions of You, absolutely mesmerising

I had the great pleasure in interviewing Jah by phone in the early ‘90’s for a feature I wrote on him published in Revolt in Style magazine (San Diego). It was a deep meeting of the musical minds (available on cassette) and when I made it to London for a one-day trip to meet and interview Terry Bickers’ Levitation, he was the first person I rang up with the hopes of meeting up. Jah was, of course, too busy, but we chatted up to the point where I realized that the bath I was drawing started to overflow out of the tub, and that was it.

Jah Wobble certainly seems a lot more human and alive than many of the so-called spiritual 'teachers' otherwise presented in this programme ;-)

I remember watching Jah Wobble at the many music festivals such as Glastonbury, that I went to many times throughout the 90s. I had no idea about his association with the guys from the Sex Pistols, and also had no idea that he was in PiL 😆 We would sit in some field or another, usually bathed in sunshine, stoned on either mushrooms and/or the great quality hash that you could buy in those days - not the nasty stuff of nowadays that's been adulterated with plastic, boot polish, or tar, or whatever it is 😮 It didn't matter which bands he was in beforehand, I just took the music at face value and loved listening to the dub reggae and other throbbing bass music coming from the stage. I played the bass myself at the time and he's spot on when he says that when you're playing certain music you can feel it pulsing through your solar plexus. 👍

gorgeous interview what a fabulous chap - really made me think and I even looked a few things up as I listened - I have yet again discovered I have all sorts of false memories - either that or Wikipedia has been edited - it is a conspiracy - I am supposed to remember the double think official version of events etc as for 27 that sure is the age - I entered the nineties sectioned by an edit... a much more interesting person to listen to than any of those claiming to BE anything special - I think I'll buy the book ;/)
