I remember the original program where they were breeding foxes (in Russia if I recall) they said they were selecting exclusively for docile natures (ie. not afraid of people) and the dog-like traits (short snout, colors, floppy ears, etc.) just came as a side effect, so there's a hypothesis that the genes for friendliness and the genes for those physical features are related somehow. So basically, if you try to breed a mammal for friendliness it will inevitably start looking dog-shaped.
