Jak 2 Critique - Where did it go Wrong?

This is a Jak 2 Critique where I answer the question: Where did it go wrong? I haven't seen many Jak 2 Critiques out there, so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring and give my honest take about this polarizing game.
Also, I played this on the Jak and Daxter PS3 collection. If there are any problems with it, please let me know.
Jak 2 is the perfect example of what happens when you lose your identity while chasing trends. When you compare this game to Jak 1, you see that there are only a few similarities, while everything else feels completely different.

No matter which Jak game everyone prefers the most, at least there's a general consensus that The Lost Frontier is the worst one.

Hey this was pretty well done. I especially agree with your criticisms on the gunplay itself. This was the first game Naughty Dog made that had legitimate gun-focused combat and it really showed. I liked all 3 games back when I was a kid, but these days the only one I like going back to would be the original and sometimes Jak 3 (which I feel improved on at least some of 2's aspects and personally liked the dune buggies). Anyway, keep it up!

I played all three Jak games religiously as a child. I think part of me always understood that the GTA-esque design was very... under-developed. I actually didn’t have the point of reference to know specifically that it was trying to mimic another specific game (GTA), but there was definitely that feeling of “something isn’t quite right about this”. Furthermore, I was VERY aware that Jak 3 did a lot of legwork to improve Jak 2’s biggest issues & definitely felt it was overall a much stronger game. Honestly, now that I’m much older and have a far wider range of understanding & appreciation of video games, I definitely think Jak 2 and 3 may not be quite as good as my nostalgic memories could suggest. Almost makes me hesitate to share my love for them with others, much less recommend people play them, just because I am absolutely aware of their flaws (which they have MANY). Regardless though, they are still easily some of my top-played games as a child (yes, even Jak 2) and much of those games are pretty much permanently etched into my soul. I feel bad for the people who didn’t get to develop such a close bond with the game as I did, as I do think there is magic to love - but man, I can’t ignore the problems. All of your criticisms are completely valid and I hesitate to argue with anything you say, but I just can’t stand to deny the deep love I still have for them.

Mountain Temple felt like such a tease for me - everything about it felt like the first game and shows what could have been.

I’m so happy this video exists. I just do not understand why so many people consider this game an improvement on the original, or even “the best video game sequel ever”. Like did we play the same game?

This was the only Jake and Daxter game I played when I was super young and I remember always thinking "when am I gonna get out of this dang city?!" And never getting past a certain point cause I couldn't even figure out what to do

I love Jak 2. And disagreed with a lot of your points but I respect your quality of video and respect the difference of opinion especially when you come off as well reasoned and don’t just say “it sucks”. Good stuff even if we disagree! 👍🏼
