The way I see myself in that situation is probably a perspective these kids don't enjoy the privilege of rationalizing due to, among other things, the society raising them; regardless, I see these boys as quite the opposite of manly, as being wholly owned by the opinions of their peers and lacking the strength defend themselves from those opinions. Swords and bloodshed make a soldier no more than a robe makes a priest.

This is my story at 2016. When I was in STM (like high school but only male students), at that time my school clashed with other high school, so every student from my school who met students from that school will be clashed. At that time I was coming home from school on my motorbike, then I stopped at a traffic light and accidentally met a group of students who were my school's rivals, they were riding in the back of a busy truck (you know, they used to stop passing trucks by force to get a free ride) , they saw the uniform I was wearing, because it was from their rival school, they immediately got ready to get off and luckily the light turned green, then I immediately increased my motorbike speed. I didn't know at the time because I was only in 1st grade, so I didn't know if something like this would happen. After the next day, my friend told me that when I got home, I should put on my jacket or take off my uniform so it was safe not to be recognized by students from other schools.

Its basically a fight for pride, they think that they are weak, so them participating in these fights and ending up victorious will give them so much pride and feel happy, its all about their confidence and wanting to be seen as a strong person, or basically proving yourself that your strong.

If each school could organise boxing or wrestling matches under supervision as a sport the kids would be able to take their anger out on each other in a controlled way. You can't just expect them to stop fighting, but if it's done safely they'd have less desire for violent street brawls.

4:20 what annoys me the most is that indonesians have no knowledge of first aid. As seen in the amateur vid, nobody tried to grab a bandage/cloth/gauze amd apply pressure on the wounds. Instead, they shout, blame, film, or just do nothing. Billy would have had a chance of surviving, onky if someone did basic first aid on him.

I'm an Indonesian and this makes me so sad to watch. I don't understand how kids my own age who live in the same city as I do have such a mentality that the possibility of killing someone and shattering another family can be seen as 'fun' or 'prestigious'. If you want to prove your school is the best, a better way would be to excel in academics or competitions, even in athletic events where you can test your physical skills and be officially awarded and ranked for it. But then again this possibly could point to the lack of funding and attention the education system receives...

Watching the video after three years i am really shocked. In my view Indonesian people are very gentle, humble. But it gives me a lot of pain. Sorry for those mothers who lost their children. I think the solution lies in the schools. Schools authority can manage the matter very easily. They can arrange sports competition, science fair etc. By this way they can come closer and hug each other. School authority should come forward to abolish this brawl in pragmatic way.
