This video seems to make many assumptions that may only be valid for a narrow group of reefkeepers. For example, that people don’t like clean up crew, certain fish species, coralline algae, sponges, etc. However, if your goal is to care for only a narrow group of fish and corals, then I see where you are coming from, and I agree with this wholeheartedly. More so, i agree, it is easier (or equal) to care for fewer organisms. But a tank with a few organisms is not the goal for most of the reefers I’ve met. For these arguments to be more effective, I think we need to state the assumptions we are making. Otherwise, we risk proliferating misinformation under the guise of facts. We need to consider not only that we are stating truths, but also how we frame those truths for others to receive. I also wish this had been prepared better, and with a little more research. That said, I appreciate the drive and desire to view this from a scientific perspective. On another note, it’s great to hear a Portuguese voice in the hobby!

Hi Andrew, with those interview series we are trying to know more about those main figures on the reef keeping hobby and to hear from them at their expertise areas. One thing that we can state is that each tank is unique, as well it’s keeper preferences and taste. Till the moment I haven’t been able to find people who has the exact same care level and dedication to the hobby. The idea from this series is to be more a chat than a lecture on a specific topic. We just share ideas from where the conversation take us. Anyway I’m delighted to have international guests in my channel and I promise to make more content in English. greetings from Brazil!

Super Reef , Thank you for the reply. I appreciate and enjoy the Portuguese. My wife is from Brazil and I’m always learning the language, bit by bit. It’s a beautiful language, and is how I found the video! I understand that every tank and every person is unique. My dissatisfaction with this video is that many of the claims are simply not true (although most are based on truth). In light of your response, the example I chose may not have been the ideal choice, as it involves personal preferences which are expected to have high variability. Nonetheless, it still exemplifies the importance of identifying assumptions, which provide the framework and context to which knowledge and scientific advancements can be applied. I would agree that it’s fairly acceptable not to state assumptions if your target audience already understands them (e.g. if talking about living corals, most will understand this is a saltwater environment), or if your target audience shares an agreeing set of beliefs on the topic (e.g. a preacher preaching to their congregation). But if we’re trying to share new information (e.g. educational videos and interviews), it is irresponsible to take such shortcuts. ...this is a criticism that is prevalent in this hobby, but was particularly bad in this interview. Sorry for the criticism, and the long response. Keep up the great work. I know all your hearts are in the right place! One thing we can all agree on is that we want the best for our pets, for the natural environment, and for those who care for and love nature!
