Jake, this is amazing and sounds SO freakin' powerful!! The last time I recorded there was when I tracked on a single called 'Fame Over Demise' when I was playing guitar for Woe Is Me. I'm seriously praying for the opportunity to track there again for a demo with my new upstart group at some point this year - #1 mark to be reached!! I just need to get a decent reference along with our ready-to-go pre-production for anyone who would be willing to hear it haha. It's certainly a toughie! :P

My theory (as a sound engineer in training) is that what's used here are the edited snare, tom, floor tom, and kick drum tracks. And the cymbal sounds being so low is due to the cymbal tracks being muted and the cymbal sound is actually spilling into the active mics. Although, that snare is being run through some sort of outboard gear to give it that nice reverb.
@FearingFarewell12 жыл бұрын
No gate here the reverb is from the ROOM kontakt instrument. The snare for this sample pack contains a direct hit.nki and a room.nki, this has additional EQ to make the mix sound tighter though. (Native Kontakt Instrument) I bought it, and it sounds intense in a good mix.

thats the one thing that i love about jake garland, his playing is so clean, his powerfills the ones that you are referring to are so clean, i have been practicing power fills for about 2 years now i can play them but no where near as clean as jake. I think the mixing is appropriate. list like every other instrument or voice, they like to have their own personal mix. In metal core, this is appropriate because the drums need to cut through. if they were mixed like a rock band for instance, the mix would be very muddy. cymbals are rolled back to keep the drums standing out. its all a matter of what you're trying to get. eq wise, if not eq'd correctly, the drums will not sit in the mix, but rather on top or below. volume adjustments can't fix a bad eq mix. if you ask me, the drums are mixed nicely. good amount of reverb on the snare too.
@TYFLOL8 жыл бұрын
It doesn't even sound good in the full mix cause every instrument sounds like shit... I think the drum sound is awful, but the problem is that it doesn't even sound good in the context of a full mix

@androiduser123412 жыл бұрын
triggers are simply a little pad that attaches to the snare head, bass head, tom head, etc... now what it does is go from that to a module for all the present triggers you have and when you hit that certain thing that is "triggered" it outputs a pre-made or user-made sound that distinctively sounds the same every time for a more tight and percussive sound like you just witnessed above... So if you want to sound like Def-leopard or Metallica, it is actually very possible... Hope this helped :-)

Just a funny observation; The beat at 2:04 sounds like the drum intro for "fall out boy - dance dance", just sped up :D (If you wanna hear it, it's about 30 seconds in their music video).
@colinbazzano12 жыл бұрын
from 0:00 to 0:07 you have the intro right into the chorus until 0:20. a little breakdown followed by the first verse starting at 0:49 to 1:04. Then the chorus again until 1:21 then it's like the part in The Sinner (1:27 in the song) 1:47 we pick back up with a breakdown until 2:01 then a possible gang vocal part until 2:15 where it goes back to the chorus Then it's like in The Victim (2:43 in the song) from 2:28 to 2:49 followed by a breakdown until 3:03 followed by a transition, chorus & outro

How I've learned it is RL rl BB RL rl BB. The RL are on the snare, the rl on the toms, and the BB on the bass drum. You can do many different variations like RL BB RL BB, or RLRL BBBB RLRL BBBB. Some of the fills in this video are just RL RL across the snare and toms but with the bass drum hitting with each hit with the stick. To get them to sound like Jake's fills you need to obviously speed them up. Hope this helps.

Hey jake, huge fan, I was wondering about your live performances. I imagine you play to the click tracks when you guys are live. What sort of headphones do you use? I bought some $80.00 headset and I found that they weren't quite loud enough when I played live. I see you have a headset but do you use the ones that go in your ear when your on stage?

@ScottLikesToParty12 жыл бұрын
you seem to lack understanding of what my comment was referring to. i didn't mention anything about rather his kick drum was mic'd or triggered. i was referring to the track in this video being the audio from the drum mic's(which is all the drum mic's) and does not include the overheads which are for the cymbals. that being the reason for the cymbals in this video sounding faint.
@bizmarkism12 жыл бұрын
true but it even sounds good in the studio update videos where it's not the actual drum track but just a live recording of the drums

You'd all be surprised how many bands sample replace, the only reason to do it is to get a clearer sound with each hit. The reason there are 3 mics on the kit is to ensure the hit is accurate without using a trigger. The only editing that I hear as a problem on this is that the cymbals are too loud, and for a solo track by itself, there's too much reverb. But, we'll see how that reverb fits into the mix when we get the final product.
@ScottLikesToParty12 жыл бұрын
i believe the mix in this video is just the audio from the drum mics. not the overheads. that's why the cymbals are faint.
@shadwsniper11 жыл бұрын
That's the point of sampling. They have the base tones, and then process them with different MIDI effects to produce the desired tone.
@pierces1994110 жыл бұрын
this one video has so many cuts in it.
@DinoDrumProduction12 жыл бұрын
The drums are mic'd up, which means they recorded the drums then set then to a certain sound/effect. If he changed the heads it would make a different sound, the snare really just has more reverb on it, and the toms are pulling more warmth and or low end. It's not really that fake, just a little more processed then other recordings.
@jakegarland212 жыл бұрын
Seems like I need to put this in the description..but to clear it up, the audio from this was sound replaced with one hit of each individual drum. It is still the sound of each drum, and still live room sounds. Nothing was mixed and was not the final drum track, just a quick play through! If you want 100% live audio go watch my drum video for "Prove Me Right" :) Also I use DW 8000 series longboard pedals. They don't make them anymore.

I don't mind people disliking that the video has the drum track from the album over it.. But to iplaydrumsye don't act like you know your samples, I can guarantee that you don't have that drum sample.. All of the samples in the video are taken straight from each drum at the studio. That snare is 100% my snare! And it's actually a Truth bubinga wood/brass hybrid snare, not hand hammered brass! :)

The only reason they sampled this kit in the studio was so that from mic to mic there wasn't any bleed. It makes it sound cleaner.
@capnawesomeful12 жыл бұрын
Jake said that it was all sampled but they were all samples from his kit and it was done so it had a cleaner sound than if they did live drums. I do prefer live drums, but I'm not the one producing the record. That being said, I hope the cymbals are louder on the final mix.
@phillipmaz12 жыл бұрын
They probably didn't use triggers but instead used SoundReplacer, Drumagogue or a similar program to replace the snare sound with the snare the producer wanted. Not actual triggers

No thats just what "studio quality" sounds like. The mics arent as sensitive, thats why you only hear the initial hit and barely any of the cymbals, *notice he has a fan and on and you cant hear that. but you can OBVIOUSLY SEE HIM HITTING IT. so it cant be fake
@steff_nexus12 жыл бұрын
This is so fucking sick. Please do more good sir.
@NickFP11712 жыл бұрын
To clear it up, the entire kit is triggered and replaced, cymbals included. I myself have recorded at many studios that replaced my drum sounds and I have friends who have recorded at Chango, where they recorded, and Cameron replaces the whole kit. Perfect example is at 1:36, he hits the crash but no sound is produced. Its not fake, the drummer is playing the parts, but the sounds are replaced to make the kit sound tighter and better. Much better than bands that use EZ-Drummer.
@austinhullmusic12 жыл бұрын
The samples are just to improve quality. He records the drums like he would live. They paste them all together in tempo and perfect sequence. Then comes the samples. The drum tech or producer takes the drum notes and puts them on a piano role on whatever program they use then they put the samples over the same notes the drummer actually played. (;
