Technically Austin is the capital of Texas which is much farther south of Dallas (195 miles) and is 162 miles northwest of Houston, but most people still think of Dallas and Houston first as they should, they are not only the two biggest Texas cities they are the 4th and 5th largest metro areas in the US outside of New York,Los Angeles and Chicago. Texas's 3rd and 4th largest metro areas, San Antonio and the capital Austin, are also very close to one another at 80 miles. Much like the state I live in Washington, Olympia is our capital but everyone will think of Seattle first, while I live in the second largest city in the state Spokane 230 miles to the east. Olympia is pretty close to Seattle but for sure its a separate entity. For you Canadians I guess I would say Olympia to Seattle is like Hamilton is to Toronto perhaps. While Tacoma is like Mississauga.
