The inspiration for the music was a painting "Les marchands chassés du temple" (ang. "Jesus drives the merchants out of the temple") by Jean Baptiste Jouvenet from the 17th century.
The composition is made of four parts in slow and fast, slow and fast alternately. In the first part Templum, we can imagine that we enter the temple and observe its enormity and majesty. In the second Humanum, we hear the merchants who start their day. It is very joyful. The next Sacrum is a sad part. Jesus cannot accept what he sees and is depressed.
In the last part, Profanum Jesus is angry, overturns all the tables and drives the merchants out of the temple.
