That's kinda the part I love about it too. No one does it the exact same so you get the freedom to choose which person you like the most and then it ends up with everyone getting what they want, and doing it how they want. Except everyone who sucks at it. No on will use them and they'll have to go figure out a something they're better at, or learn to improve ect. Even with people who wash cars you can tell everyone does it differently. I got into wallet making for a while and literally no one was the exact same even when it comes to a flat piece of leather

There’s never a “wrong” product to use it all depends on the customers wants, but a lot of those self leveling, specially the ones from Home Depot, are cheap and they look like trash in a year or 2. Also a good way to fill those cracks is with sand, it’s cheap and easier to fill those crack then using caulking and the foam. And sprinkling some sand on the finished product will make it look a little more natural then a thicc plastic in your driveway.

Your application is great. Sealing joints does 2 things: 1) Keeps moisture away from the base/sub-grade and prevents the base from pumping and eroding away. 2) Keeps non-compressibles from lodging in the joint. The joint is there to allow expansion and contraction of the slab. Hot/cold cycles. If a non-compressible stone, etc lodges in the joint, when the slabs expand, they squeeze up to the stone and causes a stress point that can cause the slab to crack. It’s routine maintenance to clean and reseal the joints. That stuff does not work on cracks. That’s a different repair.

You know why it's runny? Because you are supposed to fill the whole crack and any voids below it to work. Concrete is porous... it soaks in water... that water just got below your sealer... that's why you have to do it over and over again... and eventually replace your driveway.

@fasfgasdfagadsf
@fasfgasdfagadsf 2 жыл бұрын
@@nathanstephens2584 it takes around 5 years for driveways to develop problematic cracks. But it also depends on the company that installed it. The outcome depends on: If they used fill sand insread of a compactable fill material. The consistency of the concrete thickness, how wet the concrete was poured, If the contractor put plastic sheeting under the concrete, If you live in an area where it rains heavy/floods, If it ices over and ice melt is used on it. There are too many variables for me to want to test them all.. spend the little bit extra fill the whole thing. One and done, and you never have to replace it.

Makes me wonder what brand those hacks used so I can use it if I ever end up in a situation where I'm such a hack I need an inch of silicone. This fix will last a lifetime. Can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen just start pumping sealant in there thinking it’ll stop and fill up eventually but meanwhile it’s all just streaming out the side of the concrete pad. I’ve never used this type of sealant so I can’t say if it’s just the same, better or worse, but personally I use a kind called Vulkem, and it comes in these same large caulk tubes, looks identical and is also self leveling. So if you for some reason don’t love what you’re using currently, I’d totally recommend Vulkem as an alternative. But yeah this was a great tip/video for a simple way to DIY this specific issue

What he did is better than nothing but if you want the joint to last the life of the caulk , you need to grind the top inch or so of the inside edges of the concrete . Also how you place the closed cell backing rod is very important. The caulk needs to be twice as thick at its point of contact with the concrete as it is in the middle of the joint so that when it stretches it is weaker in the center and is less likely to pull off the edges. A well laid joint will fail at the center of the joint and not pull off the edges , a very common cause of failure. Also , self leveling can be tricky. If you leave any gaps the caulk can escape under the backing rod. A trick is to have some regular body caulk ( a urethane caulk ) and use that to block any small gaps that the backing rod doesn’t cover.

Backer should be oversized, and not meant to prevent “seeping”; backer prevents a third anchor point to allow the sealant full movement and recovery. Breaker tape is sufficient as well. You need to chase the joint cleanly. Manufacturer’s rep here.

Sika is good stuff. I've used it for flat roofing. You know it seals when it comes out like liquid bubble gum. 😂

I used same product and three years later it cracked and split. Best thing to do is get a crack chaser blade and bevel out the crack then buy top coat and mix I little on the thin side.
