Nice bar, good opportunity for Russian musicians to play with New York rhythm section. Steve (looking quit crazy), started the tune in a regular key of C then for no reason switched to E flat in a first chorus, causing slight confusion. John Webber caught up with him right away (he must have perfect pitch), Wonsey did not sound very comfortable with a tune, besides he was handicapped by horrid "Red October" upright, that I would hesitate calling a piano. Lots of young people liking Jazz !

steve grossman is the baddest dude alive. he does indeed look really crazy tho. idk why he played the melody in C and then blew in Eb maybe he's fucking with everybody. terrible camera work. film the musicians i don't want to watch russian hipsters socializing.

Yeah funny to watch russians dance to jazz. Grossman's not fucking with the band. I mean, he's kinda starting at them like he might be vibing. But the bass player catches the shift to Eb before he plays it so it seems like they were expecting.

I studied with Steve for a good while back in NY. It was the 80's. He knew every tune, verse, chorus, and he could play them in any key. Solos of Trane, Rollins, Bird, and others, and not the obvious ones that everyone learns. I have so many Grossman stories about what he taught me that have changed my playing. He was so good that you could almost hate him. Thank you Steve. I miss you.
