Ironic thing is Jamaica already has received over £300m in basically free money from the UK government over the past 25 years (I don't see anyone giving the UK free money) and on top of that, this whole argument doesn't seem to be founded on anything intellectual - like no one is stating exactly what Jamaica stands to gain by not being a commonwealth member. No body can name 1 thing. I get the impression that it's something a demonstrably corrupt government wants so I suspect they personally stand to gain from it, whereas normal Jamaican citizens will more than likely will lose out as per usual.

The majority of us Jamaicans who support this are millennials and gen zs. Older, educated Jamaicans also support the movement. However, a recent survey shows that only a 50-something percent of the population surveyed are in support. This shows the need for a wider understanding of the legal and political implications of the move. Eurocentrism and slavery are constant in the refrain of almost everyone who speaks about this change, with no one truly understanding the functions of the head of state enshrined within the Constitution. The head of state's approval is needed for the appointment of the PM, alongside various parliamentary functions. Perhaps more importantly, are other sections within the Constitution which will have to have to be changed simultaneously, and I can think of no better one than removal of the Privy Council as the final appellate court, as it would be ridiculous to continue appealing to His majesty. Several years ago, an attempted referendum and push within Parliament to move from the PC to the Caribbean Court of Justice, was thwarted. The irony in that being that Jamaica was the main CARICOM country championing the establishment of the CCJ as an appellate court verse in our laws, customs, markedly cheaper than the PC, and another hallmark of independence. They must mark the lessons from that disgrace and properly educate people on Constitution before they can make an informed decision favourable to the practical as well as the symbol goals we have. Our contribution to the Commonwealth may be sparse, but the contribution that matters that to ourselves as evinced by other republic states still seen as a part of the Commonwealth - Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, India, and other vast majorities which have been republic since independence or became republic after independence. Do not confuse republicanism with independence and suppose that the former is necessary for the latter. Symbolically departing from the Commonwealth and the UK which has done nothing for us and for which some netizens have said 'we have done nothing for' removes us from the symbiotic relationship of nothingness and can leave the other major Euro-populated and developed commonwealth countries to continue as they are. However, to get this result the state needs to inform the people or they will be in for a marginal (if at all) favourable referendum in 2025.

Thank you for this comment as it actually gives a reason and a bit of information regarding this whole movement as opposed to the usual idealistic 'freeeeeedoooommm' cry based on little rational thought you get from many in regards to things like this. That being said I do have one question - Is it demonstrably true that the UK/ commonwealth has done nothing for Jamaica? What about all the hundreds of millions worth of aid the UK has granted Jamaica? What about the hundreds of millions Jamaica is recieving and going to receive from the UK between 2023 and 2029 as part of the UK-Caribbean regional development partnership? All of this for free. Interest, house prices and cost of living in the UK is spiralling out of control and the quality of life in the UK is diminishing fast - yet despite all that the UK government is still pouring money into the Caribbean, and Jamaica somehow feels it has a raw deal? This makes little sense to me.

Things may not be as easy as people realise because there is more to becoming a republic than just getting rid of the Monarchy, the whole way the law, nationality and citizenship are codified would change. Will a proper constitutional convention lead to an informed debate? Is a referendum result a foregone conclusion? I am not so sure on both counts.
