JSH Rabbits

4 жыл бұрын

Since we have been raising rabbits we have had many issues with the feeders that we use. We've tried many types of feeders and various iterations of the same feeder type. Nothing has really worked well for us, especially with our doe(female) cages. At JSH Rabbits we don't necessarily employ the conventional cage design. Because of this or feeder needs are somewhat different.
In this video we are testing out what are called bunker feeders. These are a new design that we have discovered and we are hoping that they will be able to make our work on the rabbit farm much much easier. Raising rabbits for meat purposes is a lot of hard work. So we have to try to make the work less labour intensive, and be more efficient to reduce labour time as well as to eliminate wastage. Our aim is to provide the best rabbit meat at a reasonable cost while being efficient and trying to save on feed.
We apologize for the quality of this video. We had some issues with the camera during filming.

the rabbit sometimes gets instincts to nest. With nothing else in the cage to nest with, She nest with pellets, by trying to dig a hole to nest in. Its a compulsion. could give grass or coco husk or hay to prevent. knawing to help teeth not be so long. Need to chew something.

Yes, they have been working really well. Feed waste is a thing of the past. Right now we are contemplating phasing out the use of J feeders in favour of using these exclusively.

The J Feeder that the rabbit was chewing on and trying to tear up? We cut a hole in the cage wire at the front of the cage for the bottom to fit through. The top is on the outside to make it easy to fill up. There's a wire that helps hold it to the cage. But if you don't have a lid on it, rats and squirrels will eat the feed!

Thank you for your comments. These bunker feeders are designed to fit on the inside of the cages. The J feeders are not designed to work with the maternity cages that we currently have in place.

Are half inch by half inch sieve wires good for flooring??
@jshrabbits4227
@jshrabbits4227 4 жыл бұрын
Ideally no. What is typically recommended is 1/2 x 1" 14 or 16 gauge galvanized wire. However that's not to say that you can't use it. You may have to support the bottom of the cage with something more solid, and you will have to give the rabbit something to rest on otherwise the rabbit will develop what is called sore hocks or "hutch burn". Based on the nature of seive wire though it may not last so long as the rabbits urine will make it rust and they may pick it apart. So it can be used as like a last resort. But in normal circumstances a better wire is recommended.

What are your thoughts on feeding fruit tree leaves to rabbit?
@jshrabbits4227
@jshrabbits4227 Жыл бұрын
Can be done, but it all depends on the fruit tree. Moderation is important though, feeding them too much of one thing in large quantities may not be the best. You need to do your research.

@@jshrabbits4227 I am genuinely so happy to hear that. You might consider doing a video update just celebrating your success in that. Also outlining how you have applied the feeders in your rabbitry for extra content. I noticed you had goats as well. There are a lot of homesteading channels here in the US. You could have a large channel and following if you wanted. It will certainly help you advertise your product.
