Jamaica's Silent Children - People and Power

Jamaica likes to portray itself as a tropical paradise - its sunshine and laid-back atmosphere attracting millions of tourists every year. But behind this idyllic picture lies a more sinister truth: this is a nation where child sex abuse is endemic.
According to the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition, 40 percent of Jamaicans say that their first experience of sexual contact was forced and while still under the age of consent. More often than not, the perpetrator was someone close to home: a family member, teacher, community or religious leader.
Earlier this year, the Jamaican government launched "Breaking Silence," an awareness campaign encouraging victims to come forward. It has been heralded as an important step in combating the cycle of abuse. But, human rights groups say that taboos about reporting incest, rape and the abuse of power by older men are so entrenched that thousands of young Jamaican girls still continue to suffer in silence.

im from a Jamaican family and the culture always blames the girls accusing them of loving too much man etc , look at the way the so called police man is saying that the girl is following her friends rather than admitting that they are all victims of abuse. how on gods earth do they expect a young girl to openly talk about sexual abuse to a big ole man

@@nataliemcmasters7379 And many of those who were carrying on with that kind of behaviour have been jailed with some being deported back to their country of birth once they have finished their sentences. Many of those who allowed this kind of behaviour have lost their jobs. Not enough in my personal opinion! We also know the long term effects of this kind of behaviour on the girls and if something is illegal, thsn its up to the government to either compensate the girls or to provide long term counselling. It is despicable behaviour based on power and it needs to be stomped out! I am sick to death, no matter what country, people using children who are vulnerable for their own nastiness!

@Tarek Jabal I love a healthy debate and discussion but it needs to be respectful.I dont know whether my answer was too long or you somehow missed some of my reply but I am not an echo. Nor am I going to waste my time talking to uneducated ignorant troll who can't read! So I will say this again, this behaviour is disgusting and it has long and lifetime effects on the girls, no matter what country that's what we need to be discussing! No matter what religion, culture or sect, women have been told that they need to cover up,watch what they say, don't travel too late at night because if anything happens its the victims faults! And I am sick to the back teeth of people blaming the victim! These are innocent young girls who should be enjoying their childhood not being hunted down like we are prey! Its time MEN, NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY, RELIGION or SECT, get their house in order! And we need the law,NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY, to say, you have NO RIGHT, to harass or molest ANYBODY !!! And that you will go to jail for a very long time, or like in India face the death penalty, for a group of men who raped a young girl on a bus to death!

He used to come and watch tv then tried to 'groom' me, I was 10-12, but some how I knew what he was doing, I woke up in the dawn, took a bottle of my mother's cutex and wrote on his house side, C is a ________, it caused a big uproar, he knew it was me, he never came back to house or tried it again, saw him at a fundraising, asked who I was and when they told him, he almost fainted, If I told my mom, she would have killed him, that I know 4 sure, Im 55 now and thankful I wasnt violated!

I wasn't going to comment but I am now compelled to, this is an accurate report of this problem in Jamaica, there is a lot of denial in the community, this is evil at its finest. The poor, the policeman need more training to deal with this kind of issue. There is a lot of mental cases in Jamaica, when you highlight these issues some people are quick to say not to talk about the bad part of Jamaica, they want to talk only about the great music and white sand beaches. The real problem is not poverty dont let anyone fool you. The people dont trust the police system. And this is a major problem.

AND ITS THE FIRST I SEE THIS GIRL BUT THE COP'S ASK THE GIRL IF IT WAS ME AND SHE SAY NO SHE DON'T KNOW ME. BUT THE COP'S KEEP TELLING HER IT'S MOST BE ME. AND THEY TAKE ME AWAY BUT AFTER TRYING TO CONVINCE THE GIRL TO SAY IT WAS ME THEY APOLOGIZE TO ME AND LET ME GO AND ASK ME IF I WANT THEM TO TAKE ME BACK AT MY FRIEND HOUSE BUT I SAY NO BECAUSE I HAD WEED/GANJA IN MY POCKET! @billkattkatt1693
@billkattkatt1693 5 жыл бұрын
@Alisha Harkey - Churches and cults all operate on the same premise. They both require belief in things not seen or proven. They both require faith in a superior being. Everyone of us in the developed world are indoctrinated from a very early age into this belief system. Very few of us have ever made It to a place where we question and examine what we were taught. Very few know the origins of what we commonly call religion. Even fewer know what it's true purpose is....or why it is such a powerful tool...I can tell you it shares the same beginnings and footprints as most cults. You see, religion, like it's cousin superstition, draws you in the direction of your beliefs.... and gods are very fragile things, unlikely to survive logic, or reason.
@billkattkatt1693
@billkattkatt1693 5 жыл бұрын
@Alisha Harkey - Neither am I, Ms. Harkey, but everyone of us should pause to examine and question what is being force-fed into our belief system from an early age. I did at an early age. It got me kicked out of Sunday school...by far the biggest favor anyone has ever done for me....by light years! The questions i asked were; "Why is this called the king James bible?" and "Why were certain books deleted from the bible?" Pastor either didn't know or thought it best to ask me to leave his class. If I find that man today I will thank him...and I mean sincerely thank him. Turns out some of the other people in the class had similar questions😆 they were just too cowed to open their mouths and ask. A fact from real history... Martin Luther was NOT happy with the way things were being run in the church (you should look this up, it's a very instructive story), so he questioned the clergy ... the "old guys in charge" - they promptly "excommunicated" him! Long story condensed, he formed his church, at great risk to his life and liberty. The Lutheran church ..... Now you should ask why, and you should go research the answer..... Listen, ALL religions are the same thing. Different beliefs, different God's, different "procedures" etc etc. etc. Same damned thing...same corrupt manipulations of the minds of "the flock" for different "outcomes" by different MEN...don't lose sight of this one fact! Your personal belief system is apparently tied to a tall, dark haired, fair skinned, blue eyed guy you are told is called Jesus.....only son of a very jealous and murderous God....😆who, we are told allowed men to nail him to a cross !😲 If you read your bible carefully, I mean really read it, in particular the old testament. You will find it to be one of the most genocidal books ever written. Have you ever questioned who wrote these books? Have you ever asked who translated the "sacred" scrolls? Do you know why John Q. Public is NEVER given access to the Vatican archives? We are NEVER even told what's in them. Why is that.....? Did you know that parts of your "king James bible" is incorrectly translated? Did you know that other parts were later "changed"? I can point to two examples here...there is a verse that indicates "...thou shall overcome evil...." or something to that effect. This is an error. I do not know if it was intentional but my suspicions lean toward questioning their motives... The actual translation reads, "....thou mayest overcome evil..." There are orders of magnitudes of difference between "shall" and "mayest" in this one context alone. One is an order - "thou shall" The other - "thou mayest" points to the one gift we were ALL born with..."free will"...it suggests that we exercise that gift. The church MUST at all cost remove, or "put into question" this "free will" component from the mind of the flock if it is to do what it does oh so VERY well.... The other example is from the book of Matthew (I believe) where it says; "...women submit yourselves to your husbands as unto the Lord...." Would you believe me if I told you that NO such passage exists in earlier versions of the bible? Now ask yourself why that is....then look at the situation ALL women find themselves in society all over this planet!!!! This is why I question EVERY single thing these "holy" psychopaths spew out. You are dealing with an organization that is at every moment, riddled with politics, lies and intrigue, run by some VERY twisted men. Fact! Did you know that for the first-time in 600 years there are two living popes.....do you even know why this is? Ratzinger had to step down because the size of the scandal that was rolling down upon them would have literally wiped out the Catholic church. This was not just about the molestation of young boys. If you will seek out other sources of news you will see that there are nuns coming forward with tales of slavery and sexual servitude.... within the church!!! Now you are free to follow a church run by people like this....i won't....and if you understood the miracle that is your life... you may not be so quick to turn that precious life over to an institution run by men such as these. Just sayin'....

This is NOT rocket science!!!! Where is the compassion and empathy?? It's like that man didn't even take it seriously..."she's not a talker "😠😤😠

When you are suddenly sexually abused, the FIRST thing you want to do is forget. Forget it ever happened. So, to go to anyone (even your parents) and come to terms with what happened and dealing with all the drama that goes with it while you're still trying to sort through your emotions... It's difficult for a child with supportive parents and government. But for a child with difficult parents and an unsupportive government, I can understand why the children don't speak up and just hope the problem goes away.

I am an American woman and was sexually assaulted (and verbally harassed) by one of the male concierge. When I went to the owner of the concierge company (who is either from the Island or African)that I am telling the Truth, he acted like he was going backhand slap me. He was then protected by management and most of the other concierge's employees. I was then suddenly labeled as a 'troublemaker' even though I was not the only single woman this had happened to. I started to blame myself but this is what they wanted me to do. There are other women who are even complicit in attempts at bullying, intimidation, attempts at gaslighting me, and a major backlash. And, now it's pretend nice and fake smiles. When I realized I wasn't the first, I stood back up for myself and realized they are all cowards because they knew I am telling the truth from the start. I spoke with a seasoned cop when I was about to give up and he told me to stand my ground and also warned me of what they would do. And, almost everything he said came true including trying to make me look bad, using people who I thought were friends(but turned their backs)to record and take pictures of me. I say thanks because I know and they know I am telling the truth. I didn't realize there are cultures who don't believe in the human rights of people.

You're absolutely right! I know a lot of guys who have been sexually abused by relatives a lot of them happened to be older teen aged girls. So this isn't just "the creepy man" and "the little girl" I really hate how they brush it off when rape and molestation results in promiscuity depression stds unwanted pregnancy and suicide. It's a serious and very unfortunate thing. Once a child makes an accusation they should be removed from the home and away from the perpetrator

You ladies have made a very critical observation. I know very young boys who were constantly touched on their genitals by female members of their family, openly, as if it were meant to be a joke and you know how masculinity is in Jamaica so they don't see it as a molestation. These boys would then start molesting younger female siblings and relatives. When Prof. Herbert Gayle wrote that single parent mothers were abusing boys there was outcry from the academic feminists. We must be careful to create a future of balance and equity for all.

lorna shoeswomen Keep in mind that a documentary about girls doesn't mean it doesnt happen to boys. This channel has made videos focusing on boys and I dont say " what about women". Everytime there is a documentary about a particular group people always say What about another. Its not an insult.
@solwesfe9352
@solwesfe9352 6 жыл бұрын
Mending Wall I think the implication of what she's said is that there isn't any significant emphasis, if any, being placed on 'abused boys' within the Jamaican context but applicably extensive to all 'abused boys' as well. Not that this channel has made documentaries focusing on boys. How can there be a wholesome society without balancing the dynamics? From her perception, as I assume she's a woman, boys are not given enough attention regarding this issue especially given that majority of households are single parent and headed by women. This particular documentary is biased.

I have worked into sexual cases on several occasions and, it is really disturbing in court. That is why some of the women just hold their corners, because it is a very embarrassing situation in court. Because during the trial all the clothes that the women have on during the time of rape,it haveto displayed in the court .Because they are going holdup the girl underwear and bra etc,etc ,and asked her if those were the clothes she was wearing during the time of rape. Some people does not know how degrading it is for a little young girl standing up in court ,infront of all those big people and, answer I all those questions. It is not easy at all, people who does not have the ideas working in court at those trials will say kinds of nonsense. Sometimes those little girls breakdown in tears,crying like baby, by the kinds of questioning. That is why some girls just let it slides like that, because everyone is going see her a bad person and. Nobody from the areas is not going to want to deal her again, well who have the nerve to go to court. Are very much free to do so, because it is a very embarrassing situation in court infront of all those people.

So true.,...they just sit at their desk and twiddle their thumbs...then try to sound intelligent. None of them have a care in the world. the LAZIEST most self centered bastards. Anything to do with JA government workers is a long journey to nowhere. I once made a police report for my stolen purse and needed the signed copy. The officer told me it would probably take over 1-2 weeks for the superintendent to sign the doc. I had to go to the station physically and demanded to see superintendent. Took 4 days to get a signed police report. I often wonder if it's just a post traumatic stress society that is hopeless. I asked the officer, so the statement is written right here, yet it will take that long just to get a copy?????.... From the airports, the banks, the post office, the police stations they are ALL retarded and VERY defensive when their idiocy is pointed out. I think because jobs are scarce on the island they take great pride in feeling superior to the locals who are underprivileged. They are the most callous to old people and children. They can talk about white people all day, but atleast white people were primarily callous to nonwhites. MOST Black people on a global scale believe the eviler they can be towards each other, the more powerful they are. A group of powerless fools who bow to white people all day and believe in SERVITUDE over true freedom.

Shouldn't a woman officer be interviewing the young girls who are victims? We can point fingers at so many of the causes as to why men are acting like degenerates and praying on young girls. As a student of African history I know that African people need healing from the trauma of slavery. That is where that behavior began. However, society should not forgive the men who commit such a heinous act. I suggest jail for life or death.
