Most if not all of this is answered elsewhere already, but I figured it might be nice to give all the southern translations in 1 comment too. Pirogue - A type a boat resembling a canoe Bayou - Low ground water or slow moving stream Jambalaya - Creole rice dish typically thought of from Louisiana area. Creole food has influence from African/French/Spanish cooking. Gumbo - Louisiana soup that's flavored with mean and/or seafood. Cher a mio - Means my friend or my girlfriend Thibodaux - Surname Fontaineaux - Surname Hog Wild - Excited without restraint I think that should cover all the words in the song that people may not know unless they're from the US or the south. I might be slightly off on a couple of these, but I'm close enough!
@rachaldenise2 жыл бұрын
I'll also add that Pirogue is pronouced PEE-row and Cher is pronounced like the singer Cher's name or like the word Share.

Yes, it is a deep south Louisiana dish. It is a Creole dish and yes, again, you do need to give it a go. One can put any kind of meat in they choose, but sausage and seafood are common.

Come down to New Orleans and we'll get you some Jambalaya! Pirogue, small, flat-bottomed, canoe like boat. Gumbo, normally seafood, similar to a Spanish paella, but shrimp, crab base, and much spicier!

Good lesson , Maybe I can help you out a little too. The song comes from when Hank Williams was on the Louisianna Hay Ride. It is based on Cajun culture. Jambalaya is food made from rice Cajun spices and depending on what you want to put in meat wise. It's good food if you have not tried it. A pirogue is a small boat used in the old days for getting around in the swamps of Louisianna. If you are interested in trying the food try looking up Justin Wilson on youtube. Thanks for the lesson I hope this helped you.

As usual, good lesson. I would however make a couple suggestions... You got some of the words wrong. It's not "Goodbye Joe, you got to go..." it's "Goodbye Joe, me gotta go...." and bayou isn't pronounced the proper way. Pronounce it with an oh at the end of the word as if the u is silent.The songs about going to a party and having fun with your girl. Gotta loosen up a bit and have fun with it, in both singing as well as strumming, boom chuck strumming (bass/chord) is better when 2 or 3 bass strings are struck at the same time, then the chord. Don't mean to criticize but that's one of my favorite hank sr. songs (that and kaw-liga). My dad and I used to sing them a lot growing up.

"Goodbye Joe, ME gotta go" In the BAYOU patois, "bayou" is pronounced (by'-yoh) near town and (bah'-oh) farther down the bayou. Never (by'-yuu). It rhymes with "Joe, go, oh, pirogue, gumbo, gay-oh, Thibodaux, Fontineaux." jambalaya - rice, chicken, shrimp, sausage, celery, bell pepper, onion gumbo - stew with thick stock, usually sassafras powder (file - fee-lay) with shrimp, oysters, chicken, okra, celery, bell pepper, onions; served with rice pirogue - dugout or flat-bottom, shallow-draft boat paddled or poled through shallow bayous
