It's a shame you don't think very highly of The Wind Rises. Personally it's my favourite Miyazaki film for its sense of wonder while maintaining a grounded, historical retelling of one man's life, love, and passion for his craft.

Howl’s Moving Castle (better than Beauty and the Beast, fight me I dare you) 2. Princess Mononoke (The one good environmental story, beautiful and just such a grand story that rivals even the Lion King’s release) 1. Spirited Away (AKA the best animated movie ever made. Ghibli movies have always been in the same realm as Disney/Pixar movies for in that they are perfect in all the right ways, except I don't rewatch them as much as I may other, more flawed films. I can acknowledge they are wonderful movies and that I should love them a lot more than I do, but for some reason I don't. That being said, my favorites in no order are: - Howl's Moving Castle - Castle in the Sky - Spirited Away - Porco Rosso - The Cat Returns

In my opinion, My Neighbor Totoro is the best, because not only is the animation and the 2 main characters are adorable, it show some valuable life lessons, one I got was don’t judge a book by its cover, and Totoro and the other spirits are such a lovable characters, it’s just a great movie in general with some sad moments, too. Ya know what movie not made by Chibli reminds me of Chibli, The Garden of Words, it’s one of the only drama movies I ACTUALLY like to watch, it’s dramatic, it’s sad, it’s a great movie that reminds me of some Chibli movies Like if you agree

Ah yes, the Legend of Earth Sea. 6 books in the series and this movie starts with book 3, since the ScFy network got the rights to books one and two and did a very good mini series. So if you have not read books one and two of the series, this movie will be difficult to understand. As for The Wind Rises, its almost but not quite historical. But I still like it.

I think Pom Poko is by far the worst Ghibli film, and Earthsea is a bit underrated. Pom Poko has a serious tone problem, like you said, and it is way too long. Plus, I cannot recall a single character's name because none of them stood out. Earthsea's problems are mostly that it's confusing and some decisions by characters are dumb. It was still beautiful to look at and listen to, and the discussion on death anxiety made it worth it (unlike Pom Poko's environmental message, which really didn't need to be said).

I am so delighted to find someone else who thinks that highly of "Whisper of the Heart." I love it as well and also identify with Shizuku's aspirations as a writer. It is so charming and yet so frequently gets overlooked (possibly because it was not a Miyazaki- or Takahata-directed Ghibli flick).

I honestly haven't seen any Studio Ghibli movies, save one. Which is Spirited Away. It's been years since I've seen it, though. I'm not a big fan of anime, but I feel like these movies are probably more sophisticated compared to a lot of anime shows/movies out there. So, I should give these movies a chance. I've been recommended Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro by multiple people, and I'd like to know your thoughts on those two, please. :)
@Jambareeqi
@Jambareeqi 7 жыл бұрын
Kiki's Delivery Service is a lovely and relaxing coming of age film, Kiki herself holds the movie together because she's so relatable. My Neighbor Tortoro is also pretty chill and captures little girl's quirks very authentically but I'd only call it "Just okay" because it's not very eventful until the finale.
@berrypie11

Thank you so much for the reply! Kiki definitely sounds like my kind of movie. I also want to check out Whisper of the Heart, since I like writing too. I draw more than write, but it still sounds like a film I'd be invested in. I'll give Totoro a shot, since it sounds like it could be a cutesy movie. I'll keep what you said in mind, though.

Kiki is one of my favorites, it is so kind and relaxing, that's right! Music and scenes are so beautiful there.. The same with Totoro. Being a Totoro I cannot stay silent re this, Totoro is very nice but I've noticed it touches mostly ones who being a child spent summer in village visiting grandparents, or has sister/brother.. However, it's nice and kind as well, though not so much action, which is kinda of unusual nowadays
@strawberrysoulforever8336

Totoro is a movie about childhood. It's aimed at adults living in pre-war Japan, because the kinds of things Satsuki and Mei do are the kinds of things they did growing up. I am a 90s baby and I never loved the outdoors, but the movie still holds nostalgia to me, because it makes me appreciate childhood a lot more. I was about ten when I first saw it, but the movie is not aimed at kids, so I couldn't appreciate it then the way I do now. The other thing that keeps my attention about the movie is the music. And the animation, but the music makes everything seem more beautiful and epic, even though the story itself is quite small.
@TotorotheTraveller
@TotorotheTraveller 7 жыл бұрын
Pre-war Japan is way too long ago actually. From what I've read, spending summer in a countryside at grandparents/relatives was usual for most kids of USSR and is quite popular even now, so I guess more people can relate to adventures described in the movie.

Worst: 5. My Neighbors the Yamadas (so hard to choose which one goes in this spot, for it is a very enjoyable film) 4. From Up on Poppy Hill (I like it fine, but doesn't add anything new to its genre) 3. Ocean Waves (two teenagers find each other boring. Let's make sure they get together.) 2. Tales from Earthsea (had nothing to do with the book) 1. Ponyo (felt like a little kids' film.) Best: 5. Princess Mononoke (it has been praised enough, but it deserves it) 4. Whisper of the Heart (a story of passion) 3. Kiki's Delivery Service (a simple story, but a good one) 2. When Marnie was There (it's beautiful and well told) 1. Spirited Away (could say this one's been over praised, but it deserves it)

My personal favorites Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (I just adore the character of Nausicca! She’s easily my favorite Ghibli heroine, simply for how emphatic and sweet she was. Also the story is very strong and bold. Plus really great voice acting from every actor!) Howl’s Moving Castle (So many amazing characters, and themes. Might be the Darkest Ghibli film I’ve seen, however I’ve yet to see The Grave of Fireflies so we’ll see if that changes) Porco Rosso (Really fun movie! Great characters who are both funny and relatable, and also the dogfight scenes are just so much fun to watch!) Secret World of Arrietty (One of Ghibli’s best films when it comes to World-Building. The story of the borrowers is surprisingly original and executed perfectly. Also the relationship between Arrietty and Shaun is so touching and emotional and is the driving course of the film) Castle in the Sky (one of Ghibli’s more fun, and comedic movies! I enjoyed seeing Pazu and Sheeta’s journey to find Laputa while also avoiding the comedic pirates led by Captain Dola, and also the Military with their colonel, Muska (who is one of my favorite villains, due to his arrogance, lack of empathy, and great voice work by Mark Hamil)) I actually agree with what you said about the wind rises. I didn’t really care for it either, the only part I liked was the character of Jiro Horikoshi. His passion and charisma is so likeable and admiring. Other than that, the other characters were kinda bland, and like you said the movie was just so boring and unengaging. Also I agree about what you said about Pom poko, it just felt so preachy and dragged out. Also there was WAY, too many characters up to the point that I didn’t care for any of them. My personal favorite Ghibli films are all about fantasy and magic, where with the movies that are about real life, I personally don’t enjoy unless the story and characters really stand out to me

I disagree with a few on the best list. Although it was made before Ghibli was formed, I think Nausicaa of the Valley of The Wind is one of the best Miyazaki movies, period. Porco rosso is also not known to be particularly good.

I didn't pick Porco Rosso because I thought it was known for being the best, I put it at number 1 because it's my personal favourite. I actually agree with most of these. This is the top 5 Ghibli video that is closest to my opinion. Im so fricking happy that i found this bcuz i didnt like ocean waves and the wind rises either but i kinda couldnt put it into words why i didnt like the wind rises. You put it into words in such great way. Thank you. And i absolutely lovee whisper of the heart. Again u said so many things i agree on Now i know this is an old video so there are new Ghibli films but im commenting anyway My top 5 best: 1. Whisper of the Heart 2. Howl's moving castle 3. When Marnie was there 4. From up on Poppy Hill 5. Spirited away Top 5 worst: 1. The cat returns 2. Ocean waves 3. The wind rised 4. Tales of earthsea 5. The secret world of Arrietty Thats the worst order bcuz i havent seen them all but i still enjoyed Arrietty it was just my lowest rated after those quite bad movies lmao

I'll put them in categories. I just binged them on HBO Max (all but GOTF) so it's still kind of fresh Personal favorites: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (First exposure to Ghibli, loved the epic scale, a little rough around the edges but I enjoyed the "raw" feeling, well written female protagonist, interesting side characters, loved the plot and environmental messages) Spirited Away (Magical film, it deserves all the praise, is not overhyped) Howl's Moving Castle (Plot at times is a bit messy but I enjoyed the fantastical elements, visually very well done and creative) Great: Castle in the Sky (Just a fun adventure film, only problem I have with it is the two main characters are a little undeveloped and at times the pace is a bit rushed) Princess Mononoke (Fleshed out some ideas from Nausicaä, characters are very well written and interesting, probably the most violent out of all the Ghibli films had some more disturbing images which is why I knocked it down one peg-not pleasant to the eyes) Good movie: My Neighbor Totoro (Very campy movie. I'd call it a "vibe" film. Good film to watch on a rainy day to cheer you up. Innocent feeling) Kiki's Delivery Service (Fun film about growing up and venturing out on your own. I don't have much to say about this one. Has a simple story) Porco Rosso (Plane sequences were very fun to watch, underwhelming third act, and doesn't have the most likable protagonist) The Cat Returns (Probably had the most fun with this film, believe it or not, thoroughly enjoyed this one, transported to another world) Ponyo (Liam Neeson did a wonderful job voice acting as the father, visually this one really stands out, I do see the influence of Little Mermaid) Good movie but not my cup of tea: Only Yesterday (I don't like to look back at my childhood memories but I think this one depends on where you are in life) Whisper of the Heart (Probably my favorite of the "slice of life" films they've done, it's a feel-good movie about going after your dreams, very inspirational) The Wind Rises (It's a very well done film, kind of a sad tragic film in a way, contains my least favorite scene of their whole filmography-blood gushing out. I felt a little depressed after watching this one. Interesting dilemma of finding/doing your purpose but having that role have destructive elements) When Marnie was There (Probably one of the weirder films they've done. I enjoyed the plot twist ending. I wasn't a fan of how they depicted their relationship before the plot twist. It was a little too intimate for me) Meh: My Neighbors the Yamadas (It's a fine film just didn't really do anything for me) Arrietty (It's a well-done film, and it's visually striking I just wasn't invested in the smaller-scale story. I was bored watching it and it felt bland) From Up on Poppy Hill (Very beautiful visually, didn't like the potential incest plotline) Gets too much hate but I was entertained: Tales from Earthsea (Might be their worst film but I was laughing at how bad it was so it's kind of like The Room. The villain looked like Noodle from Gorillaz so that's a plus) Earwig and the Witch (This film is not as bad as people say it is. I wish they fleshed out the ending more, it just ended abruptly but if you understand what it's based on it's a pretty good adaptation because the author died before they could finish it) Bad movie would not rewatch/I did not like: Ocean Waves (Longest 70 minutes of all my life, did not have likable characters and I just didn't care about the teen drama/love triangle) Pom Poko (I did not like this film. It was visually weird at times and the tone was all over the place. Might be my least favorite film of theirs) The Tale of the Princess Kugaya (I did not connect with the protagonist/message of the film. A little too out there for me) Haven't seen: Grave of the Fireflies (I'm going to rent it from my local library. I heard it's like the Schindler's List of animation so I'm expecting a very sad film)

I love Studio Ghibli but have not seen or heard of most of their films. My top five would have to be is Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky (Only saw it once online before finding the DVD of it), Princess Mononoke (for the longest time haven't seen but got the DVD and ho boy was I surprised by this film), and My Neighbor Totoro (The cat bus is too adorable). I'll still give the worst list ones a watch. (I have two of the worst ones but I still enjoy them)

Note: Whisper of the Heart is much better in the original Japanese. The English dub gets rid of my favorite line of the film: "I'll sing your song to myself every night while I'm away." Despite that, the movie is a delight in any language. Shizuku is tied with Kiki as my favorite Studio Ghibli heroine. My top five would be as follows: 1. Kiki's Delivery Service 2. Spirited Away 3. My Neighbor Totoro 4. Whisper of the Heart 5. The Tale of Princess Kaguya (which I believe was released too late to be part of the equation in this video).

I haven't watched that many of Miyazaki's films but they're all quite good. The only ones I have watched is Howls moving castle, When Marnie was there, My Neighbour Totoro, spirited away and Kiki's delivery service. Out of all the ones I've watched, My Neighbour Totoro was probably the one I didn't like as much. There is nothing wrong with the animation, just the plot is very lacking, I watched it at a young age and it gave me so nostalgia because it reminded me of my life back in my home town but now I've re-watched it, it just doesn't have the nostalgic sentiment, maybe its something I've lost over the years? The plot was just very lacking and wasn't very magical, its more so for a child because of all the cute characters; however, I could see this being in other peoples favourites. My favourite has to be When Marnie was there. The animation is clearly not as top notch as Spirited away (which is my second favourite Studio Ghibli movie) but I loved the plot. The sentimental value in that movie was clear to me, reminded me of my home town because I lived in a building that was closely similar to Marnie's (or at least what I can remember from then, I was only 4). It all tied up beautifully at the end and Priscilla Ahn's singing at the end was beautiful. Anna is also a relatable character to a lot of people which is why I enjoy it so much and I relate to her on an emotional level.

Hey, don't worry. I didn't really like the movie The Wind Rises either. I know many people do, and that's perfectly fine. I just didn't find it interesting, even with all the history and wonder in the movie...I still found it boring. I actually almost fell asleep during the movie lol, but my dad on the other hand really liked the movie. My Top Five Favorites Are: 5. When Marnie was There 4. Castle in the Sky 3. Howl's Moving Castle 2. Whisper of the Heart 1. Spirited Away

I have no words for the worst side. I have not seen most of those, and the one I did see (Pom Poko) was........... interesting. So glad Marnie is not down there tho. Now my thoughts on the Top 5? 5. Ah yes, my favorite Ghibli movie. So beautiful... so amazing... 4. Never seen it. Sounds nice. 3. And now THIS magical creation. Oh boy. Very obvious pick, but can I really blame you? 2. NOT Number One? Wow, you're being really shocking. 1. Oh ho ho... This film is #1. I see it as a VERY GOOD movie, until the end there, that was.... an ending. But it is such a great film. Now my picks would be #5 Princess Mononoke: Basically what you said #4 Porco Rosso: Easily the funniest Ghibli film. #3 When Marnie was There: Just a general touching film that I like and the vast majority don't. Huh. #2 My Neighbor Totoro: Nostalsia. #1 Laputa (Castle in the Sky): A majestic and beautiful film that is everything good about Ghibli!
