His father was terminal here, he needed a kidney transplant as his kidney was in stage 4 failure, he was on the transplant waiting list but of course someone has to die with a donation card and has to match, James and his siblings were tested and not a match. James and his father were high ranking officers in the British army, James a captain and his father a colonel and never show any weakness or emotion, so this video really is remarkable and heartfelt. After this video was released a distant cousin with the same name Charles Blount as his father, was tested and a match so he was a live donor which is so brave and wonderful His father is still alive.....

James and his father were both military officers. The lines "im not your son, you're not my father, we're just 2 grown men saying goodbye ", came about whenever they parted to go on tours of duty, and this video was done in ONE take, as it was too emotional for both of them. Lovely reaction, never be ashamed of showing emotions. We are all mere mortals. Greetings from London UK xx

The song didn't mean he was rejecting his father in any way. He was saying they were grown men saying good bye. Fathers chase away the monsters when we are small. Now that his father was terminal it was his time to chase the monsters away. That was his father who had stage 4 kidney disease. They recorded this in one take. When they finished, everyone in the studio was crying except his father. His father asked why they were crying, that he was still there. After the video came out, a distant cousin came forward who turned out to be a match. His father had the transplant and is doing well the last I heard. Don't be afraid to show emotions on camera, it is a sign of strength rather than weakness.

Beautiful reaction, thank you for posting it, more people need to be willing to really feel and show emotion. 'Im not your son you're not my father' is such a loving and beautiful phrase, when we are older adults we begin to understand that when there is a tragedy looming, labels and roles are stripped away and we are simply humans in need of comfort and love.

In the video, that is actually his dad. Both James and his dad were officers in the British Army: James was a Captain and his dad was a Colonel. The line; "we're just two grown men saying goodbye" was said by James to his dad as he was leaving for the Kosovo war in '99. At the end of the recording, James and the crew were all in tears. His dad snarked "I'm not dead YET"!! and had to console them all. After releasing this song, James gave all proceeds to the British charity "Help For Heroes", which aims to help veterans. What a champ!!

You won't regret it...

This video saved his Dad's life. Yes it is his Dad and his Dad is dying from stage 4 Kidney Failure in this clip, without a matching donor. James wrote the song for his Dad and played it to him before he recorded it. James' Dad was good enough to agree to be in the clip. Once a distant cousin saw the clip, he came forward, was tested, was a match and he donated a kidney to James' Dad.

Since I haven't seen anyone mention it, the line "I'm not you son, you're not my father. We're just two grown men saying good-bye" was what the father said to James in reverse when he was deploying while they were both in the British Army (more colonel to Lt./Captain). That's why he put it in the song. There was no friction between them or anything, it was just a saying between them that meant something different.
