I served in Bosnia prior to James going to Kosovo. He has been here was a term used to say the place and people were fkd. I can still smell the single and mass graves to this day. Diagnosed with Severe Complex Combat Specific PTSD from thus time and listen to this song to remind me it was all real and they are just memories i have at night, not nightmares.

Thank you for your reaction. I always feel the "I see no bravery only sadness i your eyes" can be a taken as the soldiers around him and looking at himself in a mirror... I can imagine so many people going to war as innocent and coming back harrowed. This song speaks to this. I am blessed in not truly knowing the horrors of war but respect anyone who has had to experience that.

Great reaction. Another example of his amazing songwriting is: Carry you home

I’ve seen James live 5 times, last one was this year in France. He’s absolutely fantastic live and really talks to the crowd. Watching him sing to a crowd of 90% majority French people and everyone singing along to every word and crying to the likes of Monsters shows that his songs have reached worldwide

James was a tank commander during the Balkens war. He was a captain in the British army. An amazing guy. Ever since I heard "1973" I was hooked.

Not a tank commander but an IFV Scimitar vehicle. Infantry carrying vehicle with a medium powered gun, not quite a tank. But near enough.

At the time, I think it was the song that made me realize just how incredible James' ability to share his emotions was.

Greetings from Scotland! Yes, very difficult to watch especially as this was the reality which most of us never ever saw. James is a very quietly spoken guy but he has a talent for creating songs from his own experiences in life, that's why they hit so hard. Sadly, like you said - underrated................

I realize the images are from over 2 decades ago but they could just as easily be from Ukraine today. Guess we humans never learn...

Appreciate your reaction to this devastating song topic. James insight with his lyrics, combined with the emotion in his voice, really paint the horrors and sadness of war.

Great reaction, appreciate the immediate connection you have to the lyrics. I agree that James Blunt is so underrated. If you want another war related James Blunt track, a song I think you'd really like is 'Carry you home'.

You can hear the hatred and desperation in his voice. The Balkans was a travisty in every sense of the word. We were hamstrung by the UN because of Russia veto. We could only stand and watch as women and children were slaughtered.

A small point of correction, James was a British army Captain in the Life Guards who transferred to the the Blues and Royals so he could deploy under NATO command to Kosovo in 1999. As a side note I served in the Royal Engineers at the same time deploying to Balkans, in my case serving in Bosnia, again under NATO.

Another reactor I saw asked how can he get through this song - based on live performances I've seen, anger seems to be the key. 25 years down the line (Back to Bedlam was released 2004, and this is the last track) he's still very, very angry.

An amazing thing that many don't know about James is that he is one of the few people in history who can say they legitimately played a major role in preventing WW3. He, as a captain of a NATO recon division, refused American orders to engage Russian forces during a tense stand off at Pristina airport in the closing stages of the war. He, with the support of his direct commander, made excuses to delay any attack until the American commanders came to their senses. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incident_at_Pristina_Airport
