I like how you broke down the movies into tiers versus 25 to 1 rankings. I'm an old fart. The first Bond movie I saw in the theaters was From Russia With Love. I will state right off, this remains my favorite Bond film - just a really good espionage movie. Goldfinger is where the Bond formula began - opening action sequence that has nothing to do with the rest of the story, a gadget laden car, cheeky names for the Bond women. Connery just exudes confidence, charm, brutishness. I also think that the 3 film run of FRWL, Goldfinger and Thunderball was when Bond peaked. 3 great films in a row, never to be equaled since. Yes, there would be a good film, followed by a dud. The exception is Dalton's 2 films. Damn it I wish he had a 3rd film. If he did, he could easily have gone on to make a 4th and a 5th. Imagine him in Goldeneye? Connery is my favorite Bond. My favorite of his films are FRWL, Goldfinger, Thunderball. I agree with on Domino (played by the gorgeous Claudine Auger who is actually my all time favorite Bond girl, followed by Eva Green as Vespar. And let's not forget the gorgeous Lucianna Paluzzi as Fiona). Lazenby: OHMSS is a good film. It's good not because of Lazenby, but because of everything and everyone else around Lazenby. He's the weak link. Good direction, Good score. Telly Savalas is probably the best Blofeld. Moore: I never cared for his portrayal. It was silly and he really was playing Simon Templar. My favorites are Octopussy and Spy Who Loved Me. Spy is like YOLT only set on the oceans not in space. I actually do not like Jaws. That character ruins it for me. Maybe if he was just a henchman and not had those stupid teeth, it would be better. Octopussy has a great cast. Louis Jordan is probably my favorite villain (followed by Robert Davi) Dalton: my second favorite actor to play Bond. Both his movies are superb. Daylights is more of Bond on assignment. License - he is on a personal vendetta. Both are great. Benicio del Torres is a great henchman. I like Dalton's gritty, no nonsense, serious professional approach to the job. Living Daylights has a great soundtrack by John Barry (the last he would do for the Bond series) Brosnan: Yeah, Goldeneye hits it out of the park (but does not crack my top 5). The best Brosnan one. Sean Bean is superb. Famke Janssen is probably the best hench(wo)man. Great action, great script, great direction. Tomorrow Never Dies is good with its weaknesses. Jonathan Pryce is an excellent villain. Michelle Yeoh kicks serious ass. His other 2 are really not very good. Craig: Casino Royale is superb. Everything about it is top notch. Quantum - there were problems. A strike happening does not help matters. To the point that Craig actually wrote some of the script! I do like Skyfall. Javier Bardem is a good villain. We get Q and Moneypenny back. I do like Tanner (played by Rory Kinnear). Spectre is okay, but No Time To Die just sucks. I agree with your assessment. And they killed Bond. How the hell do you bring Bond back? What do you do - say it's a code name? So, my top 10: (5, 6, 7 are all kinda tied for the same spot) 10. Spy Who Loved Me 9. Octopussy 8. Skyfall (or Tomorrow Never Dies - depending on my mood) 7. Thunderball 6. Goldeneye 5. Casino Royale 4. Living Daylights 3. License to Kill 2. Goldfinger 1. From Russia With Love My rankings of the actors who have played Bond: 6. Lazenby 5. Moore 4. Brosnan 3. Craig 2. Dalton 1. Connery Anyway, this is all subjective. It was fun watching your video))

Your opinions are sound , and whilst I agree woth some of your rankings and the reasons why, some I don't , but that's the beauty of options, everyone has one, and being respectful , when someone doesn't agree with your rankings, (such as ohmss being at the bottom and casino royale being top tier bond,), for me, what the Bond communiity does best, respcting others rankings. I mean you only have to go on star wars forums and other movie forums to find others jumping down each other's throat for merely having an opinion, let alone ranking the movies. So good video, most enjoyable.

To me, the transition from the classics to the "new" Bond movies happens right between Brosnan's 2nd and 3rd film. Tomorrow Never Dies might be THE cleanest textbook example of the classic Bond formula: All the classic tropes, no extra fluff. The writers didn't try to challenge us viewers, they just tried to give us a good time. Little did we know in 1997 that almost three decades later, this would still be the last time Bond is just a man on a mission, working for a well functioning secret service, which is run by competent people that have their shit together. Enter Neil Purvis and Robert Wade. The infamous screenwriter duo has been involved in, if not fully responsible for, all Bond screenplays since The World Is Not Enough. And once you know this and watch them all in order, you'll see a pattern: Suddenly, it's all about moles within the secret service, Bond going rogue, and deep dives into the personality flaws and judgement errors of M and even Bond himself. Those ideas and themes may have felt fresh back in 1999 (although they are highly derivative of the rebooted Mission Impossible franchise that COINCIDENTALLY was just taking off right around that time). But as of 2024, I'm sick of it. And for the most part, the movies suffer as a result. There's one from the past 25 years that stands out and sits far above the rest: And that's the one that closely follows an original Fleming novel, as opposed to some random bullshit idea Purvis and Wade came up with. As for the single other A tier movie from that period, Skyfall, I'd like to borrow your Christmas tree analogy: It's the same old, rotten tree as the others, but it's so fully covered with nice shiny ornaments that you don't notice until you start to look closer.

After making the video, I did a thought exercise. Instead of grade ranking them, I asked what if we had to lose 5? Honestly I can lose everything post new millennium except for 1.. which is Casino Royale. All the others are tarnished. They feel compromised, ridden with a fowl stench, and severely lacking charm. Even tho I can find good attributes, if we lost the whole Craig era, I’d say it’s a tragedy for 1 reason and a gift for 4 others.

@@lesliestiers I saw NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. when it came out. I liked it a lot actually. It was nice to see Sean Connery back in the role. Also I felt that Barbara Carrera and Klaus Maria Brandauer were much better in there woles than the one is THUNDERBALL. though I agree that the leading actress, can't remember either of their names, the one In Thunderball was much better. Also Brandauer's character was really for me the first villain who was 3 dimiensional.

Spectre came out at the same time as the Marvel Films, that all did a fantastic job of foreshadowing each other and hinting towards a deeper connection in later in the franchise. Something Marvel planned ‘years’ ahead! And the Bond team thought they could get away with a lazy ass retcon scene, where Blofelt just says ‘It was all me!’ What a load of horse poop!

Yeah, Golden Eye is the best one. The first 15 minutes of the movie are THE best bond intro ever. For me, the moment when James catches the plane is the perfect definition of a James Bond movie: He can manage anything. Pierce Brosnan is the perfect James Bond for me as he PERFECTLY took all the best of the one before him and put them in a single Bond. He's ruthless like Dalton's Bond, He's charming and suave as Conrey and he's funny, quirky, and a sex "Addict" like Moore. He is the perfect balance for a Bond, The sad part is only that none of his movies stand to the level of Golden Eye. They are good but not the best yet they are for me the end of the "Real" James bond. The movie with Craig isn't the same... Before him, when you watched a Bond movie, it would feel different from the rest of the Action movies of its time. Like you had Arnold and Stalone and you have Bond. But with the Craig era, they feel a lot more like all the other action movie. They all started to feel like they wanted to be Jason Bourne.

As I already expected after your villains ranking video, this is probably the ranking of Bond films closest to my personal one I'll ever find on the internet. The one outlier we view very differently is On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and on the other hand I fail to see Diamonds are Forever's redeeming qualities, or I just don't enjoy them. Switch those two, and we have the same top 12, even in similar order. Anyway, here's my full list: 1. GoldenEye (S) 2. Casino Royale (S) 3. Goldfinger (S) 4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (S) 5. Licence to Kill (A+) 6. Tomorrow Never Dies (A) 7. You Only Live Twice (A) 8. The Spy Who Loved Me (A) 9. Skyfall (A-) 10. From Russia With Love (A-) 11. Octopussy (B+) 12. Quantum of Solace 22. Casino Royale 21. Skyfall (I swear I'm not a Craig hater lol I actually absolutely LOVE Daniel Craig, and not only him but I just ADORE the whole cast he's got with him in these films, I just adore the actors... It's the films I dislike) 20. The World is not Enough 19. For your Eyes Only 18. Tomorrow Never Dies 17. Die Another Day (so bad that I watch it as a comical movie and it never fails to crack me up) 16. Dr.No 15. OHMSS (loads of things I love in this one especially the theme song which is my absolute favourite in the whole series, and I find myself rather impressed with Lazenby, especially when considering it was his first real acting gig. But I feel a solid chunk of the film is too slow for me and not enough action for that same chunk) 14. The Man with the Golden Gun 13. Thunderball 12. Moonraker (I could LOVE this one if it wasn't for the constant change of locations which... Yes I find really exhausting) 11. Goldeneye (top 3 villains lineup in Bond, and probably top 10 in cinema history in my opinion aha) 10. Goldfinger (my apologies lol but I do love it) 9. You Only Live Twice 8. Live and Let Die 7. Diamonds are Forever (yes lol but brave yourself you're not done with extreme subjectivity here lol) 6. The Spy who Loved me (Used to be in my top 3 but the last time I watched it I found that all the praise about Triple X being a more modern and fair portrayal of women to be totally undeserved. I feel she still is this same embarrassing cliche of women whom need help from James to survive... And this did hinder my enjoyment) 5. The Living Daylights 4. From Russia with Love 3. A View to a Kill (OMG I'm so sorry please don't skin me alive James Bond fans, but I love this one so much, actually could be tied for second) 2. Octopussy (amongst so many qualities I find to this one, I will only mention one : as good as Goldeneye in terms of its villains lineup... And so many more things) 1. License to Kill (just like the previous one I will not mention all the qualities I find to this one. I'll mention two : 1. Absolute best villains lineup in the series in my opinion, and it's saying a lot when the competition is Goldeneye and Octopussy, amongst others. 2. FINALLY we have an exciting powerful interesting female lead in Pam Bouvier, whom I think is the first one whom deserves all the praise somehow given to the writing of Triple X. Even Lupe whom gets a lot of flak, I think is better written than Triple X and most of the previous female characters in Bond, wether they were leads or supporting.) Would love to get feedback from the fandom

Cause... the girl had brace, i remember laughing about it with my friend when i was a kid, the scene when they smile at each other was "Funny" cause they both had "metal" teeth... Now it's just "funny" cause she small and he's big... or both ugly... Anyone else here remember her with braces?

Good list. Personally, I always have had a weak spot for a few "stinkers" such as Octopussy, The man with the golden gun (Christopher Lee is just too good a villain), and The World is not Enough. Spectre and On His Majesty's Secret Service is F tier for me as well. I just don't buy the plot in either movie. Best Bond Movie: GoldenEye. Best Action: Casino Royale. Best Bond Villain: Goldfinger. Best Bond Girl: Vesper Lynn. Best Henchman: Jaws. Best Soundtrack: GoldenEye. Best Plot: Goldfinger. Best Opening Scene: GoldenEye. Best Blofeld: Donald Pleasence. Best Gadget: Ejector Seat (no, I'm not joking). Best Bond: Pierce Brosnan(!)

How the hell does On Her Majesty's Secret Service get an F? It's one of the best films in the franchise.

My two Connery's are Russia and Diamonds. That may be down to what you were saying about the grounded vs slapstick. Gotta have one of each in my Bond buffet! Roger's are all pretty silly. If I'm going for any it's Moonraker. It goes all out which I appreciate. Dalton splits the silly and serious, both are appreciated for what they provide. Brosnan is the perfect Bond. I'll watch any of them any time. Quantum gets shit but it's the most fun of the Craig era. So much of the melodrama of his era isn't for me.

Regarding Connery, FROM RUSSIA with LOVE. It has been a long time, but felt that DIAMONDS was the worst of all Connery's films. Loved Liscene to Kill, though not at first time watching it. yes and of All the Rodger Moore ones, MOONRAKER was my favorite. I also have Quantaum of SOLLACE AS one of my favorites. I remember my girl friend whispering in my ear about Craigs Bond, HE'S A SOCIOPATH. CASINO ROYALE though is for me the best Bond film of all time. Though it was not necesarrily on my first viewing.

Tracy dies in the novel. So, the screenwriters were just following the source and not trying to bring melancholy to the film.

Timothy Dalton. Absolutely. I personnaly wish he acted in Brosnan's films. Brosnan's a great actor, but after Dalton, I just didn't bond with his 007. I liked him a lot in the Taylor of Panama, but not his Bond character, too "cute boy" for action movies in the 90's and 00's maybe.

Putting OHMSS where it belongs puts your tier list in the S tier. Dreadful movie.
@elnick10003 ай бұрын
He has 6 fims in the superior rankings. I totally agree with CASINO ROYALE, which mgiht be the greatest bond film ever. Also LISCENCE TO KILL. I took this date out, a much younger woman than myself, sadly, I did not really put my best foot forward I felt on this date, and sad, never went out with her again. I felt I was a total idiot. Over time, though that film has really impressed me, with the lead hench men of Benicio Del Toro, and the most 3 divinsional villain of all the bond films, played by Robert Davi as Sanchez. At the time, many of us, disliked Timmothy Dalton as James Bond, he was probably the most hated James Bond, even more so than George Lazenby. But in retrospective, he is one of the best, along for me Sean Connery and Daneil Craig. Other films though that I would add to those top 6 are, in his order, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, QANTAM OF SOLACE, THUNDERBALL, and yes, the one he dislikes perhaps the most, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. The two worst, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, the film that almost killed the Bond Franchise at the time. Also FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. Got great reviews, but I saw it in the theater at the time, and found it very boring .I neever went to the movie theater to see another Rodger Moore Bond film again.

What about the unofficial Never Say Never Again, remake of Thunderball with an amazing cast and made at the same time as Octopussy? Before Dr No was Casino Royale, a comedy with David Niven.

I enjoyed NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN very much. Just did not like Moore as Bond.

“Never Say Never Again” would rank F tier. I’ve never seen the old Casino Royale and don’t really care to. I do consider “The Rock” a spiritual successor Bond film and that I’d give S tier.

Too much swearing, dude. Rankings also screwed up - OHMSS is the best *made* Bond film amongst the first nine and that alone must save it from being an F.

I get all the complaints about the Man With The Golden Gun but this movie has Sir Christopher Lee as the Villain Francisco Scaramanga my favorite Bond Villain played by who i consider the GOAT of Villain Actors and is my personal favorite Count Dracula and Finally he is Saurman in LOTR and Count Dooku in Star Wars so for me he Elevates The Man WithThe Golden Gun Just like Christopher Walken and Grace Jomes Do For A View To A Kill

The Spy Who Loved Me is a dragged out contrivance of a Fleming short story. No film starring Roger Moore belongs in the S tier. His characterization of Bond as some know all, be all bon vivant instead of a gritty spy was terrible. Just my subjective opinions about a very subjective franchise. Cheers....

Agree on The Living Daylights.. I feel the same.. I rate both Timothy Dalton´ movies in S tier too.

Moonraker came out 2 years before the first Space Shuttle launch. How about that for an impressive fact?
@willhemmings3 ай бұрын
Very similar to mine, which has Tomorrow Never Dies at the top, closely followed by OHMSS, FRWL and Casino Royale. You Only Live Twice and Die Another Day are also strong with Quantum of Solace, the two Daltons and A View to a Kill closing the top ten

As for ‘No Time To Die’, if Phoebe Waller-Bridge wasn’t involved with it, it would be S-Tear, but she clearly had her say in two lines of dialogue that were just clear virtue signalling and it completely breaks the suspense of disbelief and takes you completely out of the film. In fact, it just makes me angry because it undermines the intelligence of the audience and are completely unnecessary. Lashana Lynch is absolutely kick ass and gives Bond as good as she gets. No problem with her being moved up to 007. How she gives Bond his 007 status back was dumb and out of character though. But there are a few lines of dialogue where you just shake your head and ask why? The rest of the film is baller though👌🏻

I was not bored by NTtD. For me, the worst Bond movie is "Diamonds Are Forever." Best is "Casino Royale" (2006).
@ep1phany622 ай бұрын
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is s***. It always has been, until hipster contrarians started calling it a masterpiece, just because everyone else hated it. Just to make themselves look edgy! If Bond was so in love, why did he bang 15 chicks in the alpine retreat? Right in front of his big love? There was one scene in this film that had merit. It’s the scene where he breaks into the office to look at the secret files and puts them back and gets out without anyone knowing he was there. What a real secret agent is supposed to do. Bond is continually getting caught with his pants down, whilst creeping about. But Lazenby actually did that scene right. The rest is cr** though.

Skyfall is vastly overrated. I can't stand the recency bias that pervades the reception of the Craig Bond films. Also, I simply refuse to accept that it was more profitable than 'Thunderball'. It just rings untrue to me because of demographic changes since the 60s. Where did the bigger audience come from? China? And that made up for the vastly smaller customer potential in the West since the 60s? I don't buy it.

I will probably go to my grave defending TWINE as the best Brosnan movie. Yes, GoldenEye and TND are more iconic and fun. And Die Another Day is certianly very memorable, to put it nicely. But TWINE, to me, has one of the coolest Bond women, who also happens to be one of the most manipulative Bond villains. Elektra King is BOTH, and her demise is perfect. Bond cant help himself, but he also cant quite trust her either. Awesome music, good action, and excellent pre-title sequence, too. Yes, the final fight is lame. And yes, Denise Richards performance isnt very good. But Sophie Marceau more than makes up for it, for me.
@lesliestiers3 ай бұрын
What I needed from TWINE was more time to explore Elektra and Renard together. Remove Denise Richards character entirely and allocate that time to further fleshing out the Villains and Bonds personal stakes. Replace some of the settings, darken the tone even more, and you got a top tier Bond film in my opinion. The lyrics and power of the title song stand atop the peak of perfection but sadly the plot and characters don’t get to meet them there.

Goldeneye would be top if BMW had allowed them to use the car properly. Tomorrow Never Dies was the worst Bond movie for me though.

@@lesliestiers The Thing is: I' m a Roger Moore Fan What can I do ? 🤷😉 It's crazy: When I saw OHMSS first, I didn't like it all. But I loved it more every time I rewatched it since. Yes, Lazenby is not a good actor but I think he did it better than Connery in ,Diamonds'. Because you can see how tired Sean was of playing Bond at that time. Greatings from Germany 🙋

I’m very cognizant of how highly revered OHMSS is, and I wouldn’t take that from anybody. I just don’t connect with it like others do. Timothy Dalton certainly is a shining gem. I love his two Bond movies the same way people love OHMSS. Die Another Day was a special childhood movie theatre experience, so despite its countless problems, it has an X factor.
