Timothy Dalton is IMO the best interpretation of Bond to date, and License To Kill is my personal favourite Bond film to date, even though the film has its problems. Dalton has gone on record saying that he has resigned from the role, but in the book Some Kind of Hero, it has been suggested that MGM/UA didn’t want Dalton back. EON fought for Dalton and wanted him back, but the MGM/UA wanted a clean slate. I remember reading sometime ago that due to the lawsuits Cubby Broccoli considered selling Danjaq (the copyright holders to the James Bond series) and one person who was interested in buying was Hollywood producer Joel Silver, and he wanted to reboot the series with Mel Gibson as Bond. As for Property of a Lady, shame this wasn’t made. I’ve read so many rumours in regards to this film, that some of them are really just WTF. Casting rumours, and I stress that these are rumours, suggested that Anthony Hopkins was to play Bond’s sidekick, a character called Denholm Crisp. Hopkins would later be attached to play Augustus Trevelyan, and earlier incarnation of Alec in Goldeneye, when Dalton was still in the frame to play Bond. Hopkins would then actually be cast as Elliot Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies, before quitting the production. As for the cat burglar, rumour has it that Julia Roberts was said to be interested in the role, and that a then unknown Sandra Bullock actually signed on for it, so much so that when Goldeneye became a go project, Barbara Broccoli tried to cast Bullock as Xenia Onatopp, such weird rumours go about this era in Bond history.

Dalton was my favorite Bond. Part of this is likely that I was in high school when he was Bond and he was a man to look up to so-to-speak, but another part of his charisma was in his darker portrayal of 007. I thought the Moore films were very entertaining and the Connery films super suave, but neither of them really got Bond feeling like an actual person; they both played him as some super-spy, a cool and calm no matter what assassin who walked around telling one-liners and barely hinting at sadness or even pain when they lost partners or MI-6 associates or women, etc. Dalton was totally emotional most of the time. Sure he was cool and collected when he knew the score and had the upper hand, but several times in the Living Daylights and throughout practically the entire running time of License To Kill he is completely pissed off, betrayed right and left, on the run or running after someone, in chains or in disguise, never the casual one-liner super hero of previous actors in the role. He took Bond seriously, and the things that happen in his line of work should be taken seriously. Dalton was so pissed in License To Kill that he actually QUIT as 007 and went rogue, leaving MI-6 to go it alone for revenge. He was totally awesome.

Even though Sean Connery is the best Bond, Timothy Dalton is definitely the most underrated 007 and was a breath of fresh air after the tongue in cheek excesses of the Sir Roger Moore era. He read the Fleming novels to get into character, didn’t want to copy what Sir Roger did before him, turned down the role twice (the first time being that he was too young and wanted to wait until he was old enough to play the role), did all his own stunts, and actually felt threatening when pointing a gun at someone. Though I love both Living Daylights (It’s PTS is the series best and a great way to introduce Dalton), and Licence to Kill, the former had a pair of weak villains and second act. It’s the latter that just edges it with a better villain in Sanchez and two of the most stunningly beautiful Bond babes in Pam Bouvier and Lupe Lamora. It’s a shame MGM’s financial issues prevented Dalton from doing any more Bond outings. Two more in 1991 and 1993 would of endeared him to audiences and he would of left behind a solid legacy.

From my understanding, the Goldeneye script was written under the misapprehension that Dalton would return. That's why the movie has a much darker tone that the rest of Brosnan's tenure. Also, License to Kill's underwhelming box office was partly due to EON's failures at marketing it effectively. It was up against some heavy hitters in the summer of '89 like Lethal Weapon 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the box office behemoth, Batman. They should have held it until the Fall and put some more muscle behind the ad campaign.

All Bond actors gave their best performance in their third film (Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me, The World is Not Enough, Skyfall), its a shame Dalton didnt have the chance, his Bond was a middle ground between the "human" Pierce Brosnan version, and the "assassin" Daniel Craig version, his third film would've probably been his best...he just got unlucky, same as Pierce Brosnan, who deserved a chance at redemption after the absolute disaster and potential franchise killer that was Die Another Day.
@randomhuman973 жыл бұрын
Brosnan reboot of the character reached its peak at goldeneye. TND and TWINE were good but not top tier. die another day was, sadly a bad movie, difficult to defend it . . my 1st movie , loved it when I watched it though. It had to be rebooted again later
@giulioricci11193 жыл бұрын
Connery's best performance is in Thunderball (in Goldfinger Bond it's almost superfluous) and Craig's best is in Casino Royale. Dalton couldn't do better than that, practically Ian Fleming's James Bond.
@chase1382 жыл бұрын
I wish we had gotten less Moore and more Dalton honestly. I enjoyed his two entries in the series and their more grounded tone. He definitely matched Fleming’s original description of the character more.

Originally Roger wanted to quit after Moonraker and Timothy was supposed to jumpstart the 80s but things unfortunately happened like he wanted Bond to be more serious like the Fleming novels and not campy. I wish they did. Imagine Timothy doing all 80s Bond films in the vein of TLD just tech neo-noir set during the Cold War era. Beautiful.

Timothy Dalton is the only one that can say he didn't have one single bad 007 movie....even if he starred in just 2, those 2 were outstanding movies.. While Connery,Moore & Brosnan all had at least one if not more really bad Bond installments....(George lazenby only had the one but it wasn't amazing...so i would not count that either) Connery - You Only Live Twice, Never Say Never Again Moore - View To A Kill Brosnan - Die Another Day

Licence To Kill was also somewhat unlucky to be released in one of the most congested blockbuster summers I can ever remember: Batman, Lethal Weapon 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ghostbusters II, Star Trek V and The Abyss made up the obvious heavy-hitters, but there were also so many unexpected hits that year: Parenthood, When Harry Met Sally, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Dead Poets Society, Turner & Hooch, Uncle Buck, Field of Dreams, Look Who's Talking, Sea of Love, Black Rain etc.

I think the first treatment of Golden Eye was completed when Dalton was still officially in the role in late 93 early 94 before he officially quit in April 94 , he was keen to do the picture but Broccoli wanted him to sign another 3 or 4 film contract till the end of the 90s , and he only wanted to make one further film

For me Timothy Dalton is the Best 007. He was the dark versión of James Bond, tough as nails, Intense, serious but kind and fair when he has to be. "License To Kill" is for me the Best movie in the Franchise, we have a 007 out of is confort zone with no gadgets, fancy Cars, out MI6 and all those things we tought mede i'm special. He just survive using his habilities and inteligence. It's the most brutal 007 adventure until now. Thats why Timothy Dalton is the Best Bond ever!!! 😎 Before Craig did a realistic Bond, Dalton did that first.... It would be fantastic watch him starring Goldeneye or at least Two more pictures more 😕

They brought it back in no time to die and obviously director shares my view. Could you imagine one of those with a modern vantage or vanquish v8 supercharged in it? A resto mod style aston like that would be AMAZING

Dalton as Bond in a gritty tech thriller sounds great, until you realize this move would've been made in the early 90s and we would probably officially have a Bond movie where the term "Information Super-Highway" is said so all things considered I thinked we dodged a bullet with that one
@thelostadventuresofjamesbo51823 жыл бұрын
Haha. That's funny but the writers were doing their best to create a new Bond film with a fresh take. There were actually two different versions of the third. One was a stylish thriller and the other was an action-comedy. The former would have delivered in the way that you hoped.

@@randomhuman97 Lazenby was an actor but he had never starred in anything more than a Chocolate Commercial. He conned his way into an audition with I believe director Peter R. Hunt who was impressed enough to give him the role. IMO Lazenby was outstanding as 007 even if audiences (then and contemporary) weren’t willing to accept him.
