While in college in Atlanta, a few fraternity brothers and I went to Ponce de Leon ballpark for a night show with the the Godfather of Soul, plus Otis Redding. There we were.......a few white faces scattered in with thousands of brothers and sisters. We all got the full James Brown treatment........his initial entrance from right field via limousine, being helped off stage when exhausted, then a leap back up there for more, etc. I'll always recall that night. What a show, folks, what a show!

The difference is that while Sam recorded in a Pop vein, James was pure, unfiltered R&B. Sam had an eye on the Supper Clubs & James on the Chitlin' Circuit. It wasn't until 1960 that Sam began steering his music into R&B, while James had always been there. It was this very LP which forced Pop music to come to James & it was done on HIS terms...HARD SOUL!

They are THE FAMOUS FLAMES (Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett, and Lloyd Stallworth) . James Brown was ALSO a member of The Famous Flames...and sang with them for well over a decade. People have been spreading a LIE for over 40 years, that The FAMOUS FLAMES was the name of his BAND. WRONG !! They were a SINGING GROUP.
