Remember when TV looked and sounded like this? We didn't even think about the wonky picture and the constant "hum/static noise". We watched it anyway, and no one ever really complained much about the grainy picture or the tin-can noise. I don't think a modern class of junior highschool students could sit through this... They would find it "unconsumable"... Either that, or they'd love it and turn it into a viral ASMR ... "Bad microphone and obsolete British narrator to fall asleep to" lol

It didn't look or sound like that. I watched the entire Connections series and Cosmos, for example, when they were originally broadcast on PBS. The magnetic media videotape on which this was originally recorded has degraded over time before it was tranbscribed to digital media. These programs were much clearer, very clear, in both video and sound, though nowhere near today's modern digital media. But it is true, that we didn't notice much becasue there was nothing against which to compare it save for projections onto the big screens in theaters, which were film based and therefore much higher resolution. Every episode of both of those series was magical, by the way, and strongly influenced my thinking and path in life.
@giuseppelogiurato5718 Жыл бұрын
@@c.s.oneill2079 you must've grown up with a fancier TV than I did... It WAS truly shitty like this, and we didn't know or care, because TV itself was a miracle and a privilege and a luxury.... Don't you remember seeing "ghosts" when the reception was bad? I think you are probably younger than me... I'm really old. 🤭
@c.s.oneill2079 Жыл бұрын
@@giuseppelogiurato5718 Nope. There were no fancier TVs, save maybe for some projections setups. There were significant limitations to CRTs. What you are seeing in ths video--the terrible sound and video quality--is not how it looked when it was originally broadcast. Instead, it is the result of magnetic media deterioration to thye tape that it was originally recorded on. Broadcasts were much crisper than this, though still quite poor when compared to present day HD media and transmissions. When Cosm was originally broadcast, the graphics, special effects, and videos were mind blo9wing and not too different from what we were seeiing in the theaters at the time. They were comparatively limited, but still absolutely amazing. I'm sure you can find some no deteriorated broadcasts out on YT that were recoeded on non-Beta/VHS media such as professional reel-to-reel, studio videorecorings, and especially film. There you will see how badly this vieo has detirorated. Connections was a wonderful and gorgeously photographed/filmed (and/or videographed) series. Every Saturday (or Sunday) night, my Dad, brother, and I would tune in to American PBS and watch, in succession, Cosmos, Connections, and Dr. Who, though I may be misremembering the order that Cosmos and Connections were broadcast. :-)

Incidentally, I've also had experience with modern neurofeedback therapy. It's pretty cool. Can help children deal with hyperactivity without drugs, and the brain can train itself to calm down, by using feedback in real time.
