Great Review, you've really articulated topics that I was struggling to. Spoilers- I was also struck by how every time James reached for something that we'd consider a basic human right, that he was getting further and further into breaking the law, to the point that he was no longer just considered a runaway slave (which had terrible consequences if caught), but was considered an outright outlaw by the end of the book. The ending was very poignant.

Being real here: does any other book have a better chance at winning? 😂

Aha, I would not be surprised at all if this won!

I really hope it makes the short list too . I was thinking about how a nickname is often reserved for ppl who deserve to use it , and surely enslavers don’t , but your perspective makes more sense . The final line of the book is 🔥 imo , but I’ll 🤐 - spoiler potential turf 📖 🪱 💚

Ooh, that’s a great point about who gets to use nicknames! And yes, fingers crossed for the shortlist!
