The difference is that Deepsea Challenger cost like $10M and other such deep sea exploratory vessels like DSV Limiting Factor cost as much as $37M. That's before you get into operational costs. You can't pay that off charging $250k a ticket.

You can see it from Stockton POV: The Cyclops 2 fits 5 squished people (before implosion) so if he pilots, which he has to as a confidence scam artist in order for people to follow him into the "experiment", then he can squeeze in 4 other people if they all don't mind sitting hunched over on carpet. He couldn't legally sell tickets so he jumped through that loophole by signing up his tourists as "crew" and referring to them as such, but hey at $250,000.00 per person "donating" to his private company that's a million buckaroos per trip to the Titanic mass grave, heyo what-a-deal! He'll make back all his investment money in just a few trips, ezpz! He'll be famous in no time! Hmmm, what's the difference between fame and infamy? DOH!

Stockton was really trying to imitate james cameron in almost every way except actually building a sub that can be certified to a depth of 25% more than they are planning to go down. A failsafe for blue tooth failing at those depths is not to power up another bluetooth controller. You need to revert back to back up fail safe wired devices. Control pads are only good for periscopes. Thats all the professionals say...

How do the electronics/wiring connect into the sphere to the rest of the sub?

Great question. Not something that most people think about. There were three 'penetrator ports' behind the pilots seat. These things are super expensive. The gold coated contacts are insulated by glass that is poured into a mold. Once its set and cooled off the two halves (one inside the sub, one outside) are brought together and the male and female connectors join, the signal can pass. 16,000 psi on one side and 14psi on the other. The pins are arranged as per the signal type they carry and vary slightly. Mostly the pins carried data, but a few special ones carried a DC voltage for some systems. Generally though the high current DC needed for thrusters and lights etc was sourced from outside batteries, so the ports mostly carried data and other low voltage signals.

@@tifts9719 That's not correct. The sub did not crack. It was certified for more dives that was run on this expedition. As mentioned in another comment, it was damaged when a truck tire/brake overheated while it was being relocated. The sub was restored to museum quality and is on display yes, but the hull is intact. It would take time and money, but she could dive deep again a few more times.

That would be cool, but it would require a "spacesuit" capable of with standing 12,000lbs per square inch of pressure over the entire surface. For comparison, the human bite is about 160psi, and a great white shark's bite is about 4,000psi. This pressure per square inch issue is the reason why employing a totally spherical design made out a material resistant to pressure changes is what you want to be inside of so that you don't become the second manned sub to implode.

And it broke on multiple occasions... so he kept SPARE gaming controllers on board. He had to call off a dive (probably saving everyone's life) because the thrusters were ported to the gaming device incorrectly. DERPY AF. It's a miracle he didn't implode on the first dive, much less the handful of "sub"sequent dives.

I still respect Oceangate to a certain extent in terms of being unorthodox and challenging themselves. But it's a different story when you're charging money to guests who have no idea of the severity of the risks, despite what a paper might tell them.

It's innovation vs lives when you get right down to it. And you can't tell me that Rush or OceanGate innovated anything - it was in fact their inability to innovate safely that cost these people their lives. How is it that the submarine and submersible industries or research fields managed to go decades and decades without fatalities before OceanGate even existed? Seems to me that the real innovators were James Cameron and the engineers behind the Deepsea sub, or Victor Veskovo and the team behind the Limiting Factor. I mean, jeez, the Limiting Factor is certified to depths DEEPER than currently exists, and it's been making those dives over and over and over again. Seems to me that's what real innovation looks like - a healthy respect for the powers at play and a desire to expand our knowledge in ways that protect the sanctity of innocent human lives. I feel like we'd be talking about Stockton Rush in very different terms if he had perished in that submersible by himself. Cameron certainly took that risk with his submersible.

Money couldn't give them that risky need, I honestly think they knew they were rolling the dice, and that's why they were onboard.

Jim used a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for controlling the robot arm, so yes, we used a joy-stick controller on Deepsea. It was the right control interface for the job.
