Having featured on albums from Madeleine Peyroux's beautiful Dreamland to Herbie Hancock's emblematic Gershwin's World, American saxophonist James Carter's career is as varied as it is rich. Attesting to this relentless curiosity is his reinterpretation of Django Reinhardt's music, evoking the Romani-French guitarist's fondness for the Afro-American jazz scene and, in response, the interest shown by that scene in his own scores, starting, for example, with Duke Ellington. Backed by Gerard Gibbs on Hammond B3 organ and Alex White on drums, James Carter delivers a whole performance dedicated to the man behind “Nuages.” Recorded at the Théâtre Romain Rolland in Villejuif, just outside Paris, the trio kicks off their set with “Pour Que Ma Vie Demeure.” Overflowing with emotion, the version performed here captures the complexity and melodic quality of Django’s songs. Equally compelling is the cover of “Flèche d'Or,” driven by an infectious shuffle with organ parts and a rolling tom drum rhythm. Cleverly named “Django Unchained” (recalling Quentin Tarantino’s music-dense films), this set concludes with “Anouman”; a late and terribly addictive Django number.
