Mr Doohan had a similar positive influence on me.... when I was 20, at the big convention in LA. I had just had a bad accident aboard ship, where I lost a finger, and I was recovering. I went up to Mr. Doohan to get his autograph, and he asked about the cast on my arm...I told him the story of how I got my hand caught in a rope on my ship and after 4 surgeries to save the hand, I ended up losing my little finger from gangrene. James Doohan raised up his right hand and showed me his missing finger and told me he knew how I felt, and then gave me his recount of June 6 1944 at Juno Beach, when he lost his finger to machine gun fire on D-Day! Years later in Novi Michigan, at the Motor City Comic Con, about a year before he passed, he was there and when I went to say hello, he remembered me and asked how my hand was. Really sweet guy. I was happy to let him know how much his D-Day story helped me recover emotionally from my loss.

My first 'Star Trek convention' that I got to go to was in the late 70's here in Texas and I took along a model of the Enterprise that I had built. It was all Popsicle sticks and matches all meticulously painted white. It took me months to build. I waited in line to get an autograph and presented it to Mr. Doohan to get Scotty's opinion. He gave me the biggest bear hug and wrote, "Approved by Scotty!" on the underside of the primary hull. Little nine year old me cried with joy that Scotty loved my model. Amazing man!

He saw the most basic of human understanding that cuts through all the books people study I'd say. People want to even if subconsciously 1) Feel like they have a place in this world. 2) Having a purpose, whether geat or small. 3) like to be remembered. 4) to be noticed for achievements. S He was a fabulous human being. To use his celebrity status to empower someone when they needed some kind of encouragement to not give up. I get the impression from his great compassion that those he befriended were very lucky to share a lifetime. I get the feeling family and freinds alike could just call him up when they needed a good listener. I imagine he was the kind of man who would listen, and just let people talk till they had nothing left to say. The kind of listener who will sit there in silence without any temptation to interupt. To put himself fully aside for those he cared about. I say this not out of some sort of Fandom or celebrity worship but simply as one man who sees JD as himself first.

Scotty always been one of my favorite characters in Star Trek and hearing James unselfishly help a fan who needed help it shows how good a man he is even a WW2 hero it shows how much a legend he is

I‘m so glad I managed to personally meet James Doohan at a convention in Germany. He was such a kind person. Scotty and Star Trek surely were one of the reasons why I studied physics. So he changed my life, too.

Him and DeForest Kelley, two of the kindest guys who ever worked on the show.
@MisterBourgolini5 ай бұрын
Both men were born in 1920. Kelley unfortunately kicked the bucket in 1999. Kelley lived to be 79, Doohan lived to be 85.

As a person who was on the verge of suicide a few weeks ago, it makes me so happy that there were celebrities that actually cared about people (fans or not) at one time. It makes me sad that those days are pretty much gone though. I am glad to say that I found the help that I need, and even in a few short weeks, I am doing much much better. I still have my moments, but I now know that it is okay to talk to people about those moments. I have the greatest support team in my family, and a few close friends. If you are even thinking about considering suicide, find someone to talk to immediately. If you can't, or don't feel comfortable opening up to people you know, get at me in the comments. I will try my best to help you out just like my family is helping me. We all deserve to be mentally healthy and happy during this life, so do whatever you have to to make it a reality for yourself.

Thank you for sharing your story. It’s been almost four months since I lost a friend of mine who I knew for six years who did that to himself.

Those days are NOT gone. Not every celebrity will reach out to a fan in need but some will. You see a story about it every few months or so.

A touching story from a man I greatly admire. I once saw him driving his green mini-van as we slowly passed in opposite directions, I didn't know at that time he was living in my town, I though; that guy is a dead ringer for Scotty.
