I recommend James Garner's 2011 book, "The Garner Files" in which he provides a fascinating account of his experiences at Warner Bros. after the unexpected success of Maverick in 1957. Garner was making $175 a week as a contract player and despite the international acclaim that the series achieved, as well as millions in revenue for Warners, Garner's salary wasn't increased and he was expected to make personal appearances to promote the show without compensation. After consistently beating its competition, Garner sued warner Bros. for breach of contract in 1960, at the height of the show's success, and he elected to pursue a successful movie career.
