I moved to Newhall, California in 1988 after a stint in the U.S. Army. I went to work at an auto glass and mirror shop. The senior foreman, Glenn, was an expert motorcycle road racer and auto buff. He took me to Willow Springs, showed me where the old Riverside Raceway was. Saugus Speedway and Ascot were still on their last legs. Glen would tell me stories about meeting James Gardner, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, and Carroll Shelby. Racing with Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson and a very young Wayne Rainey. Another great memory was meeting George Barris outside his condominium if I remember, Tarzana or Sherman Oaks. He was wheeling out two custom Yamaha Virago motorcycles. Can't relive these experiences on a cell phone, computer, or video game. I never met Jay , but Glenn has at Big Boy's and the Rock Store years ago. Lost track of my friend and can't find him. Thanks Glen.

Jay really knows how to get around the city in an offroad vehicle. And when it's necessary he finds the trails even easier. This was a brilliant episode *****. A true work of art that stood the test of time, even though it's purpose was to handle the harshest road conditions. The history of the actor is extraordinary, having so much credibility in the automotive world. Jon Swift also has an interesting background, and is doing a great job to keep the legacy alive.

How lucky we were to grow up in the 60's with actor/racers McQueen, Garner, Newman and all the cars. I (and about a trillion others) started riding motorcycles because of The Great Escape. Grand Prix, LeMans, Winning, Bullitt, OAS - Jim Hall and his Chaparral's from from my part of the world. My 69 GTO, Kaw 2-stroke triple, and Rickman-Metisse. The most charismatic age of motorsports and it was accessible even to us average guys. Jay's channel brings cool back again, at least for us elderly types. Love it!

I saw James Garner at the Indy 500 near the end of his life. He could hardly walk because he had just had either his knees or Hips replaced. As a kid I think I watched Rockford Files mainly because I lived in Rockford IL even though there was no link between the Two.

McQueen's Hanger in Santa Paula was owned by my aunt so I annoyed him more than once, the 60's in LA was like renaissance Italy to me - Steve McQ collected both cars and airplanes and even lived with them - The Olds is a well drawn cartoon but a piece of american history. It does take a real hombre to drive it and i'm always happy to see these treasures in the right hands. Bravo -

Probably two reasons for that. The main economic areas of europe are all costal, be it fresh or salt water. Either will cause cars to rust out. In north america, we have the whole central continent where cars can be driven daily for 30-40 years and if maintained be fine. In addition, our culture formed around the car. Europe, culture formed more around the more functional motorcycle early on. Europe has a far more diverse and accepting motorcycle culture. Here, well anything besides harley gangs has really only caught on in the past couple decades and starting to take shape.

I produced TV coverage of a Tribute to Mario Andretti at the Beverly Hilton and was happy to meet and shake hands with James Gardner and Mario when Merv Griffin introduced me. Quick moment but Memorable. Another time I shot a Stand Up with Jay....very quickly.... I said all of: Hello....Stand By...we're rolling....and Thank you after. Nice interaction. Once more Memorable. Check out my 1969 Travco 270 Dodge Motor Home, Fiberglass Egg in my videos here on KZbin. Lucy, John Wayne and Johnny Cash all had one of these. See Cash's in his Video of Hurt. I have a photo of the Duke on set in his and I saw a Photo of Lucy standing next to her Travco 270. Any interest in a Historical, Classic Motor Home ?

"This car was built like a trophy truck" That was what John said on the podium of the Norra Mexican 1000 last week. 1st place:) I came in second with my Chevy Nova "Snorting Norton" another great classic followed by the Ripping Rooster of Jim Riley.Would love to have Jay tell the story of the Nova one day. I am just the caretaker of a piece of motoring history and with it come great responsibility. The history span 40 to 60 years of hard racing but we keep them alive for everyone to enjoy.

I've been waiting for years to learn more about this car and it's positively crushing that the current owner ditched the original drivetrain, wheels and who knows what else for "modern simplicity". It's awesome the car is still being raced, but the history is being crapped on with this mindless, generic decision. Don't get me wrong, the LS series are just about my favourite engines in the world, but they don't belong everywhere. Imagine popping the hood of a multi-million dollar Ferrari or classic Duesenberg and finding some twat had stuffed a small block in there. It's like pitching out the Mona Lisa for a picture of a Big Mac. I take my vintage race cars seriously.

I hear 'ya - but good luck finding Olds 455 parts in the middle of Mexico during a race. I am sure when it goes into museum hibernation some day it'll be returned to original.
@incubrian

oh right because it's better for the classic drivetrain, wheels, and "original" parts to force this beast to sit idle, rotting away in some forgotten museum. it's better that the owner decided to add the modern simplicities, because now it can live and breathe. it, like any car, is built to run, and most importantly, grow with the times- enabling a driver to continue their love of driving.

History? Boy, let me tell you, this is a piece of equipment. It's job is to enable bonding between a father and his kids. Unless you own this car, you have NO RIGHT to even have an opinion as to what this car should be. It's none of your business. Once you realize that you haven't got much left to live and that your beloved car is going to be passed down to someone esle soon, you'll want to bite yourself in the ass, for not have used it more.

Really? Did you not listen to the video? Watch it? Nothing on it is Oldsmobile. Might be shaped to look like one but it has nothing from one but style. Well, maybe the bumper, but doubtful. It is 100% custom build! Come on now, 2/3 scale. What off an Oldsmobile will fit? Vic made the chassis, George built the body. Leno made a point, it is just a much an Oldsmobile as the prostitutes on Hollywood Boulevard are women. If you missed his analogy you need to watch the video again.

Steve Moyers I think Thirdgen83 means this replica looks like a '69 Cutlass instead of the '72 in the description. Indeed, it's nose and tail sections are '69 based, nothing like a '72.......

Not sure why the owner and author are calling it a '72, maybe it was built in '72 but the body is '69. An interesting note if you look at the car on the magazine cover in the video, it's a different car. The mirror on the door is not '69 olds and the front bumper is metal. I'm not sure looking down the side of the car it's a '69. The car in Jya's shop has '70 style scoops on a '69 hood. The fiberglass bumpers and tail lights as well as the window openings and body flares are all '69. It all matches the one in my garage that I drove to high school in '78. Having said all that I think the car is extremely cool looking. I love the shortend wheelbase and fender cutouts for the wheels. Who would have thought of an Olds for an off roader, thanks James.
