Sean Legghette yeah but if you give up 500 yards and no points you win the game. Scoring defense shows how good they are in the red zone. You might drive 12-15 plays 10 minutes but more often than not you’re getting forced to kick a field goal in the end. And Brady marches right back down and gets 7.

There is a reason the system works so well and it's not entirely belichik. If you have a ”bend don't break” defense but you don't make the other team feel rushed then they will eventually take their time and get points on the board. The reason it works is because the opposing offense feels like they have to score, score, and score because they are facing brady. They make you feel like you have to hurry to keep up with brady and then get you with a couple mistakes that you make. then if you don't get in a rush then the pats just outscore you. I do think he is overrated but I still think he is great. It's just brady is part of the reason he can set up the defense the way he does.

The thing about Bill Belichick as a defensive coach is that most of his reputation in that department was built off of one man, Lawrence Taylor. Even when he became the head coach of the Patriots in 2000, his defenses for the next few years were among the best because of players he inherited from either Bill Parcells or Pete Carroll. Belichick is more of a defensive strategist than one who relies on a dominant defense. His schemes that played a big role in winning Super Bowls XXV (over the Bills) and XXXVI (over the Rams) were more a product of unusual tactics meant to slow the opposing team down than dominant play. In all the years he's been their head coach, the only top-flight defensive player he's brought to the Patriots was Darrelle Revis, and even he was clearly near the end of his career at that time.

I feel it's suspicious that all the Brady haters always bring up "scoring defense" which is impacted by not having untimely turnovers, and controlling the clock, two things that TB12 is one of, if not the best at. If you look at DVOA or other metrics that look at defense on a play by play basis, the patriots d ends up looking much less impressive. Why did the falcons not score in the 4th quarter vs the pats? Because they only got the ball a few times, the patriots were running play after play. Call him the "checkdown king" all you want, but we all know Alex smith isn't throwing for 445 yards in the SB, or 505, or 140 in the 4th quarter. Every SB Brady has come up big in the clutch.
