James and Kirk have really grown since the Load era, from being couple of messed up drunk kids, to becoming mature adults and father figures, that's why they get so much respects, not just as guitarists but as human beings in general. Dave Mustaine has grown too, but still has that attitude that he is better than everyone.

"The clarity and punch of a passive pickup and the fat wall of sound of an active 81" well ... :D plug both directly into an audiointerface and it is actually the other way around :D actives have the clarity and the tightness and punch because of the high output and the active parts ... passives are almost always warmer, more rounded off and more dynamic ...

Cool interview with James. But it sounds like EMG just sent a bunch of pickups with small differences to him and he just picked one out of the 20 that he mentioned. Would have been cool if an EMG staff memeber or Rob Turner gave some hints into what they actually did electronics wise. They dont have to give away every thing about the pickup. I'm guessing so other companies dont copy it, I understand that but just some small details would have been nice

+Random Username just bought a mark 2c+.... That old tone they had so focused and tight, with the gain not too high. Sounds amazing. People think they used a a lot of distortion, they maybe did in Seattle, but albums like mop and justice the drive was on 5-7 7 for master of puppets. James had heavy hands and his style is a huuuuge part of that tone

I've bought quite a few over the years. The mid-90s seemed to hit a sweet spot with the 81 and 85 for me. Bought a few more early 2000s, then another little bundle in 2007 which sadly didnt seem to have the "oomph" of the ones i originally bought. Due for a new setup late this year. I have EMG's on a couple of my guitars. I love the sounds of those pickups. I just bought a ESP V300. Im getting the Seymour Duncan Blacouts on it.

That is really funny, are not actives and high ceramique pups known for high clarity. That is why active EMGs were made for primarily. For jazz music. Many forgot about that fact.

Guys if your planning to buy pickups like this and your gonna spend a lot to buy them and install them, just make sure you have a great sounding amp that you love.

These pickups are really good people! I have a lot of guitars and gear. Imagine a JB humbucker on steroids that sums up these EMG'S James signature humbuckers.
