Eaglen is in complete control of her instrument here, and she brings a lyricism and warmth to Brünnhilde that is so rare. She remembered that Wagner was deeply influenced by Bellini and the bel canto operas. A performance for the ages.

I must agree: To me she belongs to the greatest Brünnhildes nearest to the great Flagstad, the special Walküre timbre Anja Siljas and Eaglen. Lyricism and warmth Fida Leider also.

You have probably heard the story that during Eaglen’s scene, Birgit Nilsson and Gwyneth Jones held hands while they watched from backstage. It must have been bittersweet, to see a new colleague sing a great rendition of what had been their role, in their prime years.

Se agradece enormemente permitirnos compartir estos maravillosos 6 videos impagables, con figuras que pertenecen a la leyenda: Kraus, el incomparable verdiano Carlo Begonzi, y todos, todos los demás. Sólo un detalle: creo que habría sido preferible conservar el formato de pantalla original de 4:3, la conversión a 16:9 no significó mejorarlo, por el contrario, lo perjudicó, Pero esto es ponerme muy pesado. Con estas figuras, estos videos son históricos, Confieso que soy un admirador de James Levine, la historia le reconocerá alguna vez su aporte inconmensurable al mundo de la ópera, no sólo por sus direcciones, sino por la ayuda que le brindó a muchos cantantes, muchos de los cuales estaban en esta gala en el escenario. Yo tenía un amigo que al rezar por la noche, al terminar, pedía: "Y, Señor, ayúdame a no confundir al hombre con la función que cumple". De nuevo, mil gracias.

I have a hard time believing that the Brunnhilde singer could be heard anywhere in the hall when not in the very top of her range.

She is a Wagnerian soprano who actually understands bel canto technique. It’s not a massive voice, but having heard her Turandot live I can tell you she can be heard. Her voice is piercing.

I heard Eaglen sing all three Brunnhilde's in San Francisco's 1999 Ring Cycle. Although I was less impressed with her than I expected, my overwhelming feeling while hearing her was "she definitely has the right voice for Brunnhilde," especially in Siegfried.

I heard Jane Eaglen live in opera houses several times. I can't recall her ever having a problem being heard? Her voice was extremely well placed and centred. She had received solid technical instruction and nurturing from her teacher Joseph Ward at RNCM. I think we have to bear in mind how the microphones were placed in relation to the orchestra and singer during this broadcast. In the fuller orchestral moments the sound engineering dictates what levels we hear the orchestra and singer at. After all the whole Met Chorus - and by golly they were good - sounds a bit distant in certain fortissimos during the Meistersinger chorus, let alone one singer on their own.

My subscriptions seats used to be a few rows from James Levine when he conducted at the Met. His mannered expressions when he conducted used to strike me as so pretentious and distracting, I used to try to avoid looking in his direction. These videos brought back those bad memories. I like him even less now, knowing that he was an outrageous sexual abuser of young male musicians under his direction. I'm glad the Met finally fired him.

​@garynilsson416 the stories about abuse were so rampant during the Levine Era that I knew of them in the 1980s before I even began to pay attention to opera. Given what I understand, and how the Met swept such accusations under the rug, it's hard to imagine that Mastro Levine has a side that is worth hearing. Yes, he made great music and brought great discipline to the Met orchestra, but at what cost? And continuing to ignore his actions means that his victims, and others, will continue to suffer and we will continue to glorify a serial abuser who deserves to have a huge asterisk beside all of his accomplishments.
