Grof does not say to breathe "as hard as you can". You breathe deep and with no pause. But not as hard as possible. And you can back off if you need a rest or it gets too intense. The music is not as he describes - it starts with driving tribal music with loud drums etc and then becomes more surging and triumphant and finally at the end it is peaceful to allow people to return to earth. When people have done it a few times they are able to access the state without needing to breathe much if at all. The duration varies from 2-3 hours usually. It is fantastic. I have seen things you people would not believe.

One of the biggest reasons why meditation and psychedelics are so similar, is because psychedelics thrust you into the present moment in the same way meditation does. If you've never meditated properly you might not know why that's significant - the state (felt experience) of meditation is one where the chaos of your mind has been temporarily overcome. The "present" is a tangible lived in state, not just an idea. That state of being is part of the psychedelic experience.
@nicholasbogosian54202 жыл бұрын
Aren't psychedelics kind of "out of body"? Meditation also seems a bit out of body in that you're focusing so much on thoughts...
@gitsurfer272 жыл бұрын
They both can be for sure. I'd say in most cases though its less an out of body experience, and more an out of mind experience. You feel more in your body because your general awareness and inner consciousness has increased...but your mind, or what we recognise as our mind, the chaos has subsided...so you experience a different mind state. Psychedelics basically meditate for you.
@nicholasbogosian54202 жыл бұрын
@@gitsurfer27 this topic has long been fascinating to me. True groundedness, which I don't think of as happening in the thought space but body sensation space, can also alter the mind automatically. Not only are you "out of mind", but it seems also mind organizing. I've never really done psychedelics or meditation work, but those experiences described seem to have a lot of overlap to dissociative processes.
@gitsurfer272 жыл бұрын
@@nicholasbogosian5420 Yes it is letting go and obtain far greater control simultaneously, paradoxical in nature, as most bigger things seem to be when you boil them down. Although there's nothing dissociative about it, the only thing you dissociate from is your perceived identity...which is mainly mind stuff. Its more an aerial view than it is anything to do with "losing your mind" or any such propaganda driven ideas. But like with dreams, you wouldn't expect to be able to describe the experience with the language we have at hand, and expect to be understood fully by the listener...the dream was a felt experience, something you had to be there for to understand what it was like, nothing that could ever be put to words. I think you're ready to try having an experience of your own, see this as the voice of the universe egging you on.
@BreathEmpowermentАй бұрын
@@nicholasbogosian5420Vipassana meditation, that which was from the Buddha, is extremely focused on the most subtle sensations of the body. Incidentally, the first stage of learning Vipassana is "anapana" meditation, which is a specific way of focusing on the breath and the feeling only around the outside of the nostrils and upper lip. This is to train the mind to focus only on that one tiny area. When all your attention is on one tiny area, it gets laser focused. But there a many, many types of meditation for different reasons and intentions.

From my earlier life. I've done it and I've guided it. Music, calming mantra type to begin and intensify the chanting, drums, flute, chanting, then calming tones to "come down". Breathing deep inhale, deep exhale, only over a period of an hour. People claimed both visual and emotional experiences. When it was real for me, it was. I spent time exploring it all. A lot of people are searching. My take away, over a decade away from it all? Whatever helps you experience yourself as more, AND allows you to walk the earth able to participate in life, (Jack Kornfields book, "After the Ecstacy, the Laundry,") can enhance your day to day existence. We are here, however, to live life on life's terms. Not in a cave, not locked in silent meditation, not some version of ourselves to prove our spiritual worth. That's my 2 cents.

I'm working to have it be a regular part of my day (it's intense and can feel intimidating) but it has especially been useful prior to events that I know might trigger a panic attack ie big meetings, dentist appointments, etc. It's calmed me down and left me feeling level headed and confident. I did a dmt breathing technique that was about 20 minutes long, my body got this vibrating sensation and my fingers curled almost uncontrollable, it felt as if my hands were being forced closed and lifted away from my body, my hands literally started to elevate against my will it was honestly crazy I didn't hallucinate or anything but I had a physical reaction to this technique ngl, at the end I was able to not breath for 3 and a half minutes, normally I can hold my breath for no longer than 40 seconds

The uncontrollable muscle contractions in the extremities is hyperventilation tetany, which results from blood CO2 from dropping too low. This can be avoided by focusing only on full inhalations but not forcing the exhalations, just letting go. I'm just a random guy online, but you can verify the info. Best wishes to you.

Highly relatable. Once I hit abt my 3rd session(3rd breath hold) on wymhoff method, I berly hold my breath for a min normally for one. I reached 3:42 second b4 tho, actually blew my mind couldn't kmagine doing that normally and it's all natural. Plus the hand closing is from basically suffocation m, guy above said it better, also experienced but from wymhoff method. My fingers curled all the way in then my wrist started to curl in it was so odd and unresistable without ruining the breath work not that I rlly tried to resist. But I also experience like such a strong idk sharp or burning feeling in the tip of my nose that'll spread throughout my dance, I wanna say relatable to the hand feeling but idk. Kinda scary and never fully went through cuase by then I'm literally struggling to hold no breath any longer and don't wanna pass out or sum😅

There are two things that breathing does. Not only does it take in O2 but it also releases CO2. Breathing quickly like that lowers your CO2 pretty quickly. You can have a respiratory alkalosis which is a Ph imbalance in your blood and that DOES affect people neurological. This is old info.

I’ve done holotropic breath works before with supposedly the most renowned company that specializes in holotropic breath works. The way he showed joe how to do the breathing was very wrong and you don’t just breath crazy however you want. I’m pretty dang sure that dude was at a bunk companies workshop. I did this almost 10 years ago and we practiced the correct breathing technique for 2 days before the actual event and it was for an hour and a half. Everyone who was doing the proper breathing technique literally passed out around 45 minutes to an hour. I had also practiced mindful breathing meditations multiple times a day for almost Three months before doing the workshop. The reason that guy didn’t feel anything was because he wasn’t doing it properly. Me and all the other people that did it were so extremely physically and mentally exhausted that we slept almost the whole next 2 or three days only getting up to eat huge meals and pass back out. I had never been so damn sore and tired and so god damn hungry in my whole entire life all because of doing the holotropic breath works. And when I did it I had a pretty damn profound experience where I went through every emotion feeling them in the most extreme way and relives every event In my life attached to those emotions. It was Intense. Someone in my group had started crying nonstop and rocking back and forth in the fetal position. One person said they felt nothing and he had passed out after about 15-20 minutes of half ass breathing and then his breathing turned into an almost perfect technique and very intense and he was rocking back and forth kind of moaning weirdly for another 30 minutes, he didn’t remember anything. Shit is crazy just find a good School that doesn’t say just breath hella heavy how ever you want.

What you described doesn't say anything really. People rocking back and forth can be interpreted in many ways... Sounds like your body was in extreme exhaustion if you had to sleep and eat for 2/3 days after - seems like it was just intense fight+flight followed by intense rest/recover.

Holotropic breathing sounds just like hyperventilating and all of the woozy mindfuck that comes with it. The Holotropic as presented sounds weird. Hyperventilating is a studied phenomena that seems to be a relative of these techniques. Realize the difference between deep breathing and hyperventilation. You can breathe deeply but if you breathe too much you are hyperventilating. Deep, slow breathing is good for you. It is how a healthy person breaths, and they also breath from their belly not from their chest. Holotropics is a controlled hyperventilation and hyperventilating for 3 hours is pretty much not good for you. But it can alter your consciousness for sure. The way it works is from reducing oxygen in your brain. At least that is what you can gather from the studies done on hyperventilation. But its pretty much unknown what really happens during holotropics. Reduced oxygen happens but over 3 hours your body would have plenty time to react to this so we might not know until james nestor does his study about it

Since they brought up death metal, I want to say the idea is not as absurd as it sounds. I've induced some pretty intense states of mind while listening to death metal and working out. Particularly with running, where the intensity of the music allowed me to push beyond what my normal limits would be, and enter into an altered mind state. They're talking about breathing, I was at the point where I am breathing so hard I thought I was going to vomit, and then pass out from not being able to breathe or get enough air in. I dont do it often anddo not recommend it to anyone, its probably not safe, but I definetly related to that part of the discussion. Bands like Behemoth, Nile, and especially Gojira have helped get me there. Le Enfant Savage album in particular with songs like Pain is the Master, The Gift of Guilt, etc. The album is a work of art, and a powerful tool for me. I can't listen to it and not work out hard. It drives you. I can't imagine how that would work sitting down and trying to breathe as hard as you can, but the idea of using death metal and breathwork to access altered states is something I've experienced. Doesnt take 3 hours either, I'm talking running 1-2 miles as fast as you possibly can. That was all I needed, but I am not a marathon runner, I was a sprinter did 100 meter in HS. So for me 2 miles is alot, but I think the key is max BPM in the music and in your heart for just slightly longer than your comfort zone dictates. Thats where the death metal helps. It just empowers you and helps induce and transcendant state of mind.

Breathing deeply and quickly (Wim Hoff) decreases circulatory CO2 by breathing out CO2 from the lungs. This causes a state of alkalosis and alkalemia. Alkalemia (elevated blood pH) generally has a vasodilatory effect on blood vessels in the human body. Specifically: 1. Alkalosis causes vasodilation, especially in the pulmonary circulation. Studies have shown that acute alkalosis induces pulmonary vasodilation 2. In the systemic circulation, alkalosis tends to cause vasodilation as well, though the effects can vary depending on the specific vascular bed 3. The vasodilatory effect of alkalosis is often mediated through nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathways in the vascular endothelium 4. Alkalosis-induced vasodilation appears to be more pronounced in arteries compared to veins 5. The vasodilatory response to alkalosis can differ between species and vascular beds. For example, some studies found NO mediates alkalosis-induced dilation in piglet pulmonary vessels but not in rabbit or rat lungs It's worth noting that while the acute effect of alkalemia is generally vasodilatory, prolonged or severe alkalosis can have more complex effects on the vasculature and may impair the normal regulation of vascular tone Additionally, the body has compensatory mechanisms that can modify the vascular response to chronic pH changes. However, in most acute situations, alkalemia promotes vasodilation rather than vasoconstriction. Alkalosis causes vasoconstriction in the brain, reducing blood flow, causing dizziness and euphoria

James Nestor is somewhat talking from his behind in this. Stan Grof wasn't "one of the first test subjects of LSD"; he was a young psychiatry student doing research on subjects taking LSD. You can learn actual information by watching his documentary "The Way of the Psychonaut", reading his book titled the same, or go to the training Grof Transpersonal Training or Grof Legacy Training.
